The Jets probably would have taken Irvin in 2 or 3. I knew he was rising, but they very obviously weren't taking him in 1. The Seahawks run a bizarre ship. -X-
No one wanted Irvin but Seattle. It was obvious the Jets target was Coples. Just like Ingram it was all BS.
Depends on the paper and the relationship with the editor, actually. I used to write my own headlines. This has to be fake.
From everything I've read this is exactly correct. With Floyd off the board and Trent taken at #3 the Jets were desperately trying to trade down in Round 1 but couldn't find any takers in the allotted time. Coples was BPA on their big board, but they wanted a pass rusher (Irvin over Ingram) and thought they could move down. When Irvin was taken, they still wanted to move down but the guy they were targeting later was gone so the urgency evaporated a little. Considered moving down for Ingram or Mercilus, DeCastro as well, but went with BPA and took Coples who still fills a need and gives them potentially the premier set of 3-4 DEs in the NFL for the next decade. We'll look back on this in 3 years and laugh off the idea that we shouldn't have taken Coples -- he could very well be our best defensive player by then pending what happens with Revis and his contract, better than Wilkerson for certain. If Pace and Thomas don't bounce back and Maybin nor Sapp develop further then we will prioritize OLB in the 1st round next year with some great prospects (LSU's Montgomery and Mingo, Texas' Okafor and Jeffcoat, Georgia's Jones, VT's Gayle, USM's Hunt, Oregon's Jordan, USC's Horton, OSU's Simon, and FSU's Brandon Jenkins).
