All we really need from Cumberland / Amaro is to catch the ball when it comes their way. Sounds simple, but it's been a problem in the past 2 seasons. Throw Kerley into that mix too.
I tend to agree about Kerley. He's one of my favorite Jets but something was off about him this year. He seemed disinterested, disappeared for games at a time and had more drops than I ever recall. _
not sure how this team wins a game without simms and sudfeld. thats taking away a TGG projected 40 touchdowns
^This. He was unreliable last year. Too many drops. Maybe the new coaching staff will get his motivation going on again, and if that's the case great. As it is, with the contract Idzik erroneously gave him midseason, he should be on the bubble right now. He likely will keep his #3 job this season, but with Devin Smith looking over his shoulder, that job should be in danger if he repeats last season's performance.
Yeah with Marshall's ability to play the slot Kerley is expendable. While Marshall is big and physical he's shown he can be pretty dominant in the slot. Kerley is the typical quick little guy but if Smith can ball we'll be seeing him outside and Marshall inside quite a bit. Kerley is going to have to work to be #3 and maybe even #4 because Amaro can flex out and play WR when needed.
Watch film on Maneri, he's a tank and that's about it. Would be nice if Saxton makes the team but he can't block for shi_t. Maybe we only carry two TE's and go with another receiver this year.
interesting...it may be entirely possible that I became so immune to shitty offense I didn't even notice.
Yeah I noticed too. I agree with the other guys. Kinda like he knew the jig was up and it affected his play. With Marshall and Smith in the house his work is cut out for him now.
A lot of people citing too many drops for Kerley, which I don't really recall. I did some research and this might better explain his ineffectiveness: 29 of the 75 targets Kerley received last year were "uncatchable" passes. The 38.7% uncatchable rate was the 3rd highest of any receiver in the NFL (Football Outsiders). When Geno misses, he usually misses high, which doesn't bode well for a 5 foot 9 inch receiver with a small wingspan.
Thanks for the numbers. I haven't done the research into the numbers like this, and it's very revealing. My memory of Kerley is several opportune drops, however I'm a couch potato and not one to argue with the statisticians.
I think the "drops" you and others are referring to are the clutch plays that he could have made, but wasn't expected to make. This is why his actual drop percentage (4%) is so low; an incompletion is only scored a 'drop' if it was a remedial play for the receiver. While Kerley has always been surehanded on easy catches, his limited size and wingspan restricts his ability to make difficult catches, which is probably what frustrates the fans. Having a 6' 3" Decker and a 6' 4" Marshall with the ability to make those catches should be a much better help for whomever is under center this year.
I've watched a bit of footage on Saxton and while he is that athletic, I don't see why he would stick. He didnt even put up big numbers at South Alabama.
