What's the difference between a 6th,7th,8th offensive lineman and a 6'7" 280 pound 'blocking TE'???? Why wouldn't Winters, Dozier, whoever be our 'blocking TE'?
Because you can have a blocking TE that can also go out and catch a pass. Design a play where they look like they are blocking or they block for a short period of time and then run a route. It just keeps the D on their toes a bit more if the TE is somewhat respectable in both the blocking and catching.
Dang, too bad we didn't get Wright. Oh well, our receiving corps looks pretty good anyway: Marshall, Decker, Kerley, D.Smith, Amaro, Cumberland, any QB would be happy with that.
Sure. They aren't as reliable a catching a pass, but I guess the sneaky/caught off guard factor is there because teams are less likely to expect them to go out and catch a pass. Can't hurt to have a well rounded TE though. Amaro is not and neither is Cumberland.
No idea what he can bring to the table. You wouldn't think a lot considering he's been floating around around since 2010. But, as they say, "one man's trash is another man's treasure".
I've asked the same question in the past and there's no reason really why this doesn't happen in the NFL. It has happened, tackles move to TE, TE's move to tackles, but it doesn't happen in the frequency you'd think. This should become a norm. If you're looking for a blocking TE who does nothing but block, why not just use your swing Tackle? He'd play 3 spots, save a roster spot. You line him up there and teams will think you'll run that way, just throw a playaction the other way. The possibilities are endless. Why teams don't do this I don't know. Football is all about creating mismatches.
I know right? Bad enough we have to save a roster spot for a long snapper, and another one for a 6th lineman. I mean blocking TE.
Yes. Very unfortunate. Perhaps he comes back from this ACL tear. Seems like unlike the past you have a pretty good prospect of doing so if you put in the work on PT. I thought Sudfeld had potential, and am underwhelmed by Cumberland. It's all on Amaro right now, and that probably means TE will be a weak point. Not that I was counting on Sudfeld to shore up that position, but as others have noted he was a quality special teams player who imo could have been better used in the passing game.
The acquisition of Marshall should help the TE position overall. In the past there have been instances where Cumberland was the #1 receiving option on the field. On paper at least, the TE should be the #4 target on the field now, which should leave them with plenty of opportunities to get wide open and do some damage. Hold on to the ball Amaro!
I get your point, and you may be right. But I doubt we see an uptick in Cumberland's performance just because Marshall is on the team.
