I'd have to assume this as well, but I find it so difficult to believe that they couldn't even get a stinkin' 7th rounder for this guy. He has played well enough at times to warrant a low round pick, especially from a team who is willing to put him back into position. Frankly, any team in need of a DE would be fools not to take a flyer here. I wonder what I'm missing. Is it attitude? Work ethic and effort?
i could be wrong on this, but i think that option the Jets picked up made him an unattractive trade prospect. the team trading for him would owe him that ~8M next year, and/or need to make a long term arrangement, in addition to giving up the draft pick. this is for a player who hasn't shown he can be an every down player at any position, and is likely just a subpackage guy.
Talent? In spades. But he also has an inconsistent motor--first saw it when he was playing with his hand in the dirt vs. SF (that 38-0 disaster) and on a 3rd and 1, right after Frank Gore gashed the interior of the Jets line, there was 'Q' standing there with his shoulders sideways to the LOS like some guy standing on the 'local' platform having just watched the 'express' blow by him. Q's got too much 'dog' in him.
I went apeshit when we drafted Coples because I wanted DeCastro, instead he falls to Pittsburgh, he tears his knee as a rookie and is better than any guard we have on the team right now.
Oh damn! Tyvm, that'd do it. That's just way too much money for QC. I bet you're right because that'd put everything into focus here. On a regular rookie contract, QC's level of play while at DE would seem to be worth something, but at $8m forget it. And of course you're right, without having shown himself to be an every down player yet that salary is just killer. If he has any hope of staying in the NFL he had bette get it into his mind that he will need to start completely over somewhere else. I do wish him the best though (unless he goes to the Pats, then fuck'em ) since I don't think he ever really got a chance to play his position here with the Jets.
He's playing behind a brutal offensive line. And he's still a bit frail, but so was Matt Ryan and a slew of other QBs who have bulked up 2-3-4 years into the league. I suspect they will put a premium on building his line and giving him another second or two to give him a shot. And he doesn't have nearly the arm that Carr or Mariota has but it's more than adequate and he's just so intelligent and accurate. He's kind of a stronger armed more mobile Pennington. _
Thank god. Hopefully it's at least a full season before I have to look at that obscene wad of scar tissue poking out from under his shoulderpad again.
It is surprising, but maybe this is Bowles and Mac trying to light a fire under the team to get improved play and a greater sense of urgency. I'm guessing that Coples wasn't working that hard or listening to Bowles, or at least his play suggested that he wasn't. As someone else pointed out, it could also be the contract and not wanting to be locked into him for next season. Maybe they tried to trade him and found no interest. I never wanted or liked him anyway. Hopefully, it will light a fire under the rest of the team and show them that bad play or poor work habits (or whatever the reason is) won't be tolerated.
Well Coples joins the long lineage of great Jets, 1st round busts....... This organization hasnt fared better in the 2nd round too, and Devin Smith will join that list also..... smh
Another #1 draft choice goes busto. Really the way to build a championship team. Next to go are Milliner & Pryor because they are both unproductive
Well it sucks worse for those of us who decided to get matching brands on our arms. Mine still hurt like hell but every once in a while a chunk falls off and I get a tasty little snack. _
Fixed. Since Coples really was playing out of position here, he just may amount to something on a team that has a viable system in place and takes the flyer. This isn't exactly a tsunami of change with this firing. More like a warning shot.
I really think the majority of people on this board do not understand what the term "bust" means. Coples can hardly be called a "bust". Gholston was a "bust". Coples has made some of the most memorable, dominating, jaw dropping kind of plays for this defense the last few years --- Just way too few of them. At times you watch him complete manhandle his way into the backfield and blow up a play and then not see him (or notice him) on the field for the next 2 quarters. Coples should have never been drafted because the Jets were never going to utilize him properly. Coples is not going to all of a sudden become an All Pro, but I would be pretty shocked if he doesn't get picked up and be a solid starter for some team for the next 5 years.
Its like he's not even on the team anyway....wtf does he ever do?Millner stay by your phone your next.....
That's it. Time to wake everybody up, everyone's job is on the line, the effort in the last game just wasn't there.
