 Yeah, that I am. Thanks Baamf, that is a pretty sweet list. A lot of tough battles between the Jets and Browns. Here's to hoping we are on the winning end of one come Sunday!
This series has been dominated in Cleveland. We've only gotten them at home 5 times... a little strange. We have enough sob stories as far as the losses go...but does anyone remember the 1988 game? We were blown out by NE on opening day and went to Cleveland as heavy underdogs despite QB Bernie Kosar being out. Lo and behold the Jets got their act together, the D played a great game (knocking out back-up QB Gary Danielson in the process) and stunned Cleveland 23-3. I can even remember Pat Leahy scoring a TD on a fake field goal only to have it called back by a penalty (poor guy - we knew it would be his last chance to score a TD).....
Yeah, i think gastineau had a big game. We played them in Montreal in preseason and the Browns were whining about gastineau doing a sack dance after a preseason sack against backups and they vowed revenge but never got it. The following week we thrashed Houston 45-3, i think Glanville left tickets for Elvis at the meadowlands that day.
I remember the Houston game too....I think that's still a record for the Jets, largest margin of victory....
Oddly I don't remember the 1988 Cleveland game too well, but I was at the Houston game. Drove back from college to go to it. Glanville did something that day to really piss off Joe Walton, I don't remember what, since I was upstairs and didn't see replays or anything. That may have been the reason for the big score.
I think what you're referring to was a late hit on Al Toon early in the game, knocking him out of the game. He needed stitches, got a concussion too, and Wesley Walker stole the show scoring on 3 long TD's. I think the team as a whole got fired up not so much Walton vs. Glanville but I may be wrong.....
That sounds right, Glanville's teams always had the reputation of being very dirty. Funny, the two times I remember Walton getting pissed at the opposing teams both resulted in lopsided Jet wins, that game and the 62-28 win over Tampa Bay in 1985, the year after the James Wilder incident. Maybe they should have found more ways to piss him off.
Yes, the 62-28 game was definately revenge. Walton was kind of like that - he had the memory of an elephant. Great game - wish I had it on DVD..O'Brien threw 5 TD's..... Also the 23-3 game I mentioned above could of been revenge for the divisional play-off (it was their first meeting since)....
I'm a little young to remember 86, but I remember how bad the 2002 game was when we blew that huge lead. We had just beat an Diego on the road in an upset and came home. We were up at halftime and lost. I can still see Dennis Northcutt catching the 2 point conversion with 2 Jets swarming him and John Hall's last second kick getting blocked. We dropped to 2-5 and were certain we were finished. Not quite the way it worked out though.
History pretty much repeats itself when it comes to the Jets, Barton had a Gastineau like gaff against the Chargers in the playoffs in 2004, they tie it but by some miracle we win in OT. The next week in Pittsburgh was about as crushing as Cleveland in 1986.
leave it to the Jets to actually put the damn game up on there website. You think we'll see the Yadier Molina homerun on Mets classics : P
It was the day after Vinny and the U lost to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl...bad weekend for sure....
I'm a florida State fan, so that Fiesta bowl was especially nice. I remember Vinny and the boys dressed up in camo for promos leading up to the Bowl...talking baout how they were going hunting for lions in the jungle. Until Vincenzo put on a green uniform, I used to think back to those commericals and laugh my ass off. Maybe if he was riding the white line highway with the rest of the Hurri-cons...he coulda gotten up for that one.
