The Sowell Train is a star. www.profootballtalk.com is giving him credit for breaking the Abe-to-Denver trade. They even have a link to his site up. BIG TIME Way to go man.congrats ABRAHAM TRADED TO BRONCOS? A.J. Vaynerchuck of JetsTV.com reports that the New York Jets have struck a deal to ship defensive end John Abraham to the Broncos in exchange for a first-round pick. We're in the process of trying to confirm the report. The Broncos hold the 22nd and 29th picks in round one. Vaynerchuk believes that the 29th pick is being sent to New York. Our guess is that the Jets might then try to dangle the two first-round picks in an effort to jump up even higher in the draft, possibly as high as the No. 1 overall spot on the board. The Texans could be tempted to make a deal, since it would enable them to snag a guy like tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson at No. 4, giving them another first-rounder later in the day. NFL teams use a chart that applies point values to draft picks for trade purposes. We don't know whether, under the chart, a No. 4 and a No. 29 would be enough to justify a trade up to No. 1. It's possible that the Jets might have to throw in another pick or two, if they indeed intend to make a run at the top spot. The Jets slapped the franchise tag on Abraham a week ago, and Abraham has made clear his desire to get out of New York. The Jets have been shopping him for the past few days. If the report is true, the Broncos' decision to cut on Wednesday defensive lineman Trevor Pryce, running back Mike Anderson, and tight end Jeb Putzier makes plenty of sense. The Broncos needed to clear cap room in order to absorb the new deal that Abraham undoubtedly will sign with the Jets, after putting his John Han#### on the franchise tag. The Jets then would trade the new contract to Denver. To avoid a cap hit for the Jets, the deal undoubtedly will include not a signing bonus but an option bonus payment due within a few days after the trade is consummated, putting the entire responsibility for his cap number in 2006 and beyond (if there's a cap) on the Broncos.
Why would we package and move up? I'd rather stay with the 4 and 29 and just draft two offensive players that will help us. the 4, 29 and 36 picks would get us a QB, and 2 O-line players that can step in from day 1. What was our weakness last year? QB and O-line...
whoever picks him up is going to give him a neew contract. they don't have to give him the 8 mil, but probably a long term deal.
Arent they going to release Mawae? I understand we would want a LT in the 1st., but from what I hear, Mangold is the real thing. A great center makes a big difference on the OL. If he doesnt go here, he'll go very early 2nd. rd.. Thats not much of a stretch! But then again, we do have an early 2nd., so I would agree with you!
http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/pick_value_chart.htm A 4 + 29 is not enough to get it done. See the attached NFL Draft Blitz chart...by all means not the definative one, but at least a start. #1 overall is = 3000 pts. #4 (1800) + #29 (640) = 2440 pts. The Jets would have to throw in their 2nd rd pick to make this work. That ain't going to happen...and the Jets have too many needs to give away 3 premium picks in what is expected to be a deep draft. Again, the Jets will most likely trade down from #4 and acquire more picks in this years draft and next years draft. Check the depth chart and you will see that there are alot of holes to fill.
from kffl Jets | Abraham drawing interest Thu, 2 Mar 2006 15:57:57 -0800 NFL.com reports agents Tony Agnone and Rich Rosa, said on a conference call that four or five teams said they were "definitely interested" in New York Jets franchise DE John Abraham, but they declined to name them. "Change is good and for John Abraham moving forward, change would be good for him," Rosa said. "You get to a point in your career as a player when there's been some unfulfilled promises, you have to move through that because it's a business. That's what we've been able to do with John, have his sights set on a brighter future." Agnone and Rosa said in the best case scenario, they would come to a long-term deal with an interested team and then have the new club work out a trade with the Jets.
Do you think the people at profootballtalk.com know that Jet TV is a 19 year old kid with a webcam? Or maybe the people at profootballtalk.com are 19 year old kids with a website. After all, anyone can have a "source", especially when you don't have to reveal it and if what you report doeesn't occur..you blame the "source"
I agree. Trading up makes no sense whatsoever. Too many holes to fill. And who are the Jets trading up to get??? I'd stay at 4. I will say, however, that losing Abraham for a late first round pick is horrible. He will be sorely missed. Say good bye to the pass rush. Say good bye to sacks with forced fumbles. And say good bye to a few interceptions a year from his pressure. Playmakers like Abraham don't grow on trees. He will be a monstor somewhere else. This trade will go on the list of Jet blunders. The Jets pay Ellis big money and lose Abraham. It is a shame.
Stop using the stupid chart as if it is gospel. Teams assign different values, and even those values change yearly depending on the depth of the draft. In addition, position of need and the positions represented by a draft ranking list would affect the chart. I agree that we don't and shouldn't trade up, and that we have needs to fulfill. I disagree with the use of the chart nixing that potential trade possibility, however.
IF the Jets go through all of the trouble to trade Abe, are lucky enough to land a late 1st rounder, then package that pick, along with our #4 AND another 1st day trade, as the article would like you to believe, I will personally break into Mangini's office and take lay a phantom dump squarely on his desk calendar, so he will always remember the day he made his first screw up... Let's hope that for everyone's sake, including Mangini's, that we use those 2 picks wisely...
