Good trade, builds respect with veterans who may think about coming here and grows a 7 into a 5. No problem here. Avery became a factor mine with his IG account last year. Dressing full uniform to do stuff on game day was hilarious. Wish him well
I think anyone who is calling this a "great" trade is just full of shit. It was a low tier trade for a quality backup to potential starter, depending on the roster. It was a good move for the future of this franchise in terms of money, contract, and Douglas's reputation around the league.
At this rate of trading away players with expriing contracts we will not get any comp picks. But, it is still possible to get comp picks. It means signing released players, or bargain players after the deadline as they do not get counted. But, given the trend of getting rid of expiring players you might be right. JD comes from Baltimore where being thrifty and making an effort to aquire comp picks is part of the underlying philosophy. It will be really interesting to see how we approach the off season. 9 draft picks should help fill a lot of the roster holes. I just hope he continues the investment in the OL. Fant, Lewis, and Rotten have been at the bottom of the league in pass protection and sll 3 need to be upgraded.
I'm sorry but scenarios 3 & 4 are ridiculous. Scenario 1 is possible, but highly unlikely. If so, the Jets will wind up with ZERO fans. Scenario #2 is the only one that makes any sense. Gase doesn't have to agree. He's got zero leverage. He has sucked as a HC for the Jets and sucked as HC for the Dolphins. He's lucky to still be employed at this point. He's the reason that they are winless and look so inept. He knows that no one is on his side and that if he raises a stink, it will just make him look even worse, and it would assure that he never gets another coaching job in the NFL. The best thing that he can do is just suck it up and take it. He made the bed, now he has to lie in it.
Thank you for bringing some sensibility, rationality and intelligence to this thread! I'm not surprised to see them, but some of the posts here are downright laughable. Posters who have zero clue what they're talking about saying that Douglas has been a disaster or should have done this or that. It's funny. They're the same posters who trash the team for having no talent, but then when Douglas trades one of those "no talent" players, they expect to get a pick in the first three rounds. You can't make this shit up! If it weren't for the fact that it drags the level of discussion down and lowers the site's football IQ by 30-40 points, it would be truly hilarious.
QB Joshua Dobbs traded from Pittsburgh to Seattle for a 5th round pick. TE Nick Vannett traded from Seattle to Pittsburgh for a 5th round pick. WR Zay Jones traded from Buffalo to Oakland for a 5th round pick. C Austin Corbett traded from Cleveland to Los Angeles for a 5th round pick. DE Gerard Avery traded from Cleveland to Philadelphia for a 4th round pick. K Kaare Vedvick traded from Baltimore to Philadelphia for a 5th round pick. CB Marcus Peters trades from Los Angeles to Baltimore for LB Kenny Young and a 5th round pick. I get it that trade ups in a certain draft happen for a player and what not. I'm not new to football trades. But it's not the only compensation that's always available.
and we will be at the top of the draft and the steelers in the bottom of the draft so what the fuck did we actually do? we moved up 34 spots into the bottom of the 5th round. not even because we see a guy we like and want to get, not because this guy isnt useful or is a cancer or cant play anymore and were dumping salary. hes a legitimate nfl football player and we gave him away for absolutely nothing. this is just fucking stupid what the gm is doing right now. its really hard to turn 5th round draft picks into nfl players. someone please tell me he will be a free agent at the end of the season or something like that. thats the only way this makes even a little bit of sense.
It's not that bad of a deal dude. And he is a free agency. But it doesn't feel like a 'win,' because it's merely our second trade up including a player in as many weeks.
I was really excited to see the Williamson-Mosley combo in the middle. It would be tough for teams to deal with. Of course, as usual, I never got to see it once. Unreal. Good luck in Pittsburgh, Avery!
Look nobody should be doing backflips but this is essentially squeezing out any possible comp we can get for an agong player soon to depart. Unfortunately the team needs so many bodies in FA that there is no way they will get any compensatory picks for departing players. If AW was gonna leave in FA which he was, moving up 30+ spots where the odds ARE higher for finding a contributing player than in the 7th was better than nothing. They also do right by the player which can help down the road
he's a FA after this year. nothing matter this year, he wasn't going to be here next year or net us a comp pick. so we gave up 8 games of solid LBer in a losing season to move up 2 rounds 2 drafts from now and save about 3.5mil for next year
That was my initial reaction too, but when I was reminded that he's an upcoming FA and wasn't going to be signed by us, it made sense.
