Brees was a starter in the nfl for almost 7 years before ever playing with Brunell. And his numbers didnt change much once he had Brunell as a backup. I really dont understand the Brunell hate though. Yeah the guys not gonna be playing like Favre @ 40, but hes an incredibly accurate passer who holds the nfl record for most consecutive completions, and historically is considered a QB that doesnt throw many interceptions. So you got 17 year nfl veteran, nfl record for consecutive completions, and not many INTS sounds to me like a perfect mentor for Sanchez. I agree that Pennington would be a better choice, but you cant complain about Brunell. And im also incredibly confident that IF Brunell had to step in, he could come in and win games for us. Were a run first/defensive team, so all we need is someone who doesnt make poor decisions and he fills that need nicely.
I've always liked Mark Brunell. Well, the 90s version of him anyway. I'm sure he'll be a good role model for Sanchez. At worst it's still a huge upgrade over Clemens.
First, I have to say nice rack on your avatar. Second, I think Brunell can help not only Snatchez but also Ainge (the #3 after Clemens is released). Now let's get this camp thing going so we actually have something meaningful to talk about!
hmm dont feel like digging through this thread but something ive never seen talked about was the fact that Brunell is a lefty. Which would completely change the way the Oline would have to block. I just read this off some other site "A member of the offensive line previously gave an anonymous statement to NYDN, citing that he and the rest of the O-Line did not want to make the necessary adjustments in order to protect a left-handed QB." If the oline would have to practice blocking in a different manner, I could see that being potentially detrimental to the team, since it would be screwing with what theyre used to. Thats the first legit reason ive read against signing Brunell.
Like I said earlier in this thread,if Brunell was brought in to be a mentor for Sanchez he should had been hired to the coaching staff. There are 53 men on a roster that can be put on the field to help a team win. We now have 52. Waste of a roster spot. I'm not here saying that his experience won't help Sanchez but Cavanaugh has NFL QB'ing experience, why can't he be Sanchez' mentor? Again, waste of a roster spot.
Clemens gets released, goes to our division rival, and wins the AFC East on the last game of the season against us. Wait that was Chad... Seriously though I could see him in Buffalo they got nothing.
Just further proof that some Jets fans will complain about literally anything. God willing, Brunell never plays a down for the Jets.
-1... I don't believe in the whole mentor thing. Your QB coach and other coaches are your mentors. So in that respect I do agree with you. But in reality if Brunell is the mentor figure and whoever the 3rd QB is ends up being the actual backup does it really matter? I mean we carried 4 QBs last year and THAT was a true waste of a roster spot. And in reality if it ever comes down to the 3rd QB on the depth chart you are freakin screwed anyway. Question is who is the 3rd and hopefully LAST QB on the roster? My vote goes to Ainge.
I vote for Ainge, also. I think the kid showed some skills in the limited work he's had in the pre- season. The thing I don't think i'll ever understand is giving up a draft pick to Detroit for O'Connell?Unless we're still going to carry 4 this season with Clemens being shown the door?
I don't get that move either...I was sure we were cutting Clemens...and I reallly just didn't understand carrying 4 QBs it just made NO sense...maybe it was to get info on the Pats?? But to give up a draft pick? Is it possible there was another move that was going to be made? Possibly a trade involving Clemens that fell through?
