Could not agree more with your entire post. Watching Cromartie try and tackle is pathetic. I didnt once all season see cromartie wrap up someone and bring them down. Also, he gets burned in coverage if the WR runs any type of route other than a Fly.(To cromarties credit, he is probably one of the best Corner in the league covering Fly routes) We need someone who is physical and I can definantly see Wilson stepping up big time in his second year.
Damn, a week and a half into the offseason and the Jets have their 3 top priorities signed or something in the works. Couldn't be happier with this. Welllll that first bit it debatable.. second part I definitely agree with. I have faith Wilson will be more than capable in that role.
this makes all the sense in the world. c.bailey is an UFA, he's probaly looking for a ring, a one, two year contract would make sense also.
What's not debatable is in 2009 we had the #1 Pass D (among others), and the best QB passer rating/completion percentage against with a rotation of #2 CBs. Point is with Rex coaching and still having our key guys, Revis, Harris, Leonhard, and even Scott we can have a very good defense year in year out.
in the zone heavy scheme? where Cro isnt that good at zone coverage? they havent had a solid pass rush since Merriman went down. Shaun Philips had a decent year as "the guy" but nobody else was really getting to the QB. Cro was good for us this year. we had very little pass rush. that being said if we could actually lock up Holmes and Edwards, the drafting of Wilson would in theory make Cro expendable. i would like to keep Cro, but if losing him means keeping Holmes and Edwards you do it and dont blink. i think Holmes is gone though he'll demand top dollar as Edwards will demand a good contract but i doubt anywhere near what Holmes will be want
This is a fucking article by "Miami for the Superbowl" Lombardi. His only contacts are the pizza delivery boy and his mom.
it does make sense though. Wilson wasnt drafted to be the best nickelback in the league. we also need to invest more money into the backside coverage, and a young front 7 talent. not to mention the main goal of this team should be to keep things as consistent as possible for Sanchez moving forward. most considerably his playmaking targets
maybe we can get cro cheap. He always says he wants to be a jet and this and that so maybe he will take a cheap pay check in order to stay a jet.
..but he's not even that. I'm not expecting a rookie to contribute immediately but his first year had barely any playing time to gain experience. If Cro goes, I'm guessing another short term hire, minimum. I don't see Wilson playing CB in Week 1 2011. I hope I'm wrong.
lol im not saying we wouldnt miss Cro. we would without a doubt. im just saying sooner or later Wilson is gonna have to step up. and if hes forced to do it sooner than later because we had to invest money to keep Edwards/Holmes than so be it. the staff basically patted themselves on the back for the draft pick in talking him up all the time. time for them to show they werent wrong.
The thread title might want to be changed, I got really excited thinking we were on the verge of signing Braytonio. As for Cromartie, he's replacable. The "problem" with having Revis is that nobody ever throws at him; teams always go after the #2 guy, so we need someone solid over there. We can probably find that person for a cheaper price than Cromartie will likely command, and we did take a CB in the first round last year for a reason.
We could easily solve that problem by giving Kyle a Revis mask to wear during games. And giving Darelle a Mickey Rooney mask. Superbowl.
I will take Chris Houston if it means to keep Edwards and Holmes People forget that Manning was torching Cro a new asshole when they were playing in that wild card game...He can be suspect even if he makes INTs
I hope this article is accurate. I consider our offseason priority to be: Harris, Edwards, Holmes... then distantly Cromartie.
It really isn't. The pass defense was better with him then it was with Cro. Of course much of that was thanks to the better pass rush that Lito played with but he was still effective in his role. Get the pass rush back up to snuff and Wilson or a lower level replacement will get the job done. My money would be on Wilson.
Our main d weakness in 2009 was CB2. Sheppard was a nightmare, and teams relentlessly attacked it as they should. This year that wasn't the case. They attacked the S position when Leonhard went down, and the LB coverage. With Leonhard back, we just need to add some pass rush to make this a dominant D. Of course losing Cro would open another hole, which i'm not too confident Wilson can fill yet.
I think it's smart to let Cro test the market, see what kind of offers there are for him, and decide if we can match. Holmes is the clear #1 priority, I think they'll make a last minute decision on Edwards/Cro.
