I'm guessing that Mangini has seen enough out of Robertson to give him and Pouha the job. Oelhoffen is a specialist in the 3-4 and has been there for ages. So if we're signing him we're playing a 3-4. I wouldn't be opposed to Robertson at nose tackle atleast to start out, considering that he has a low center of gravity and can hold his ground.
Von Oelhoffen is a DE in the 3-4, and he is more than servicable enough to be a transition player at DE until we find a more permanent solution at the position... and typically, there is no such thing as a pass-rushing DE in the 3-4 (at least in the sense I think you mean). I'm more concerned at NT now, because we don't have one good enough to draw a double-team. BTW, if you think that we are immediately going to run a Patriots'-style hybrid/mix-n-match defense, I think you need to prepare yourself for the strong possibility that we are going to try to build a fundamentally-sound base on the defensive side of the ball before we start getting pretty - which means MUCH more 3-4 than 4-3. If that is not the case, then I think it will take much longer for the defense to be effective.
He does have a funky-yet-cool name, though. I think that's the Steelers' #1 criteria for scouting players.
if we get Kimo and Ted I believe that means Robertson gets cut? what point would it serve to have him any longer...
I'm not sure how they would do that. I'd guess Robertson would only be a 4-3 DT, and it would be Kimo-Washington-Ellis in the 3-4.
It would give us a killer interior 4-3 defense. Washington at 365, and Robertson at 320. That's like the Ravens in 2000, with Adams and Siragusa. With that said, I think Robertson would be the odd man out when we play 3-4 (which I'd expect the majority of the time.)
Robertson is the prototypical NT. People say hes too tiny...hes around 6'2, 320. But hes the same size as Vince Wilfork and Casey Hampton. So obviously hes got the size. From a physical point of view, hes got it covered. The biggest knock on Robertson is that he dosent understand blocking schemes well. This is in the 4-3, but his job would be simplified in a 3-4, so IMO, with him, were fine at nose. Its an end we need. As for Vilma, hell be fine. Hell be our Donnie Edwards, in that hell be more an undersized, quick, playmaking type of 3-4 LB. So besides DE, wed also need a pass rushing LB. AJ Hawk anybody? Okay, maybe not, but his teammate Bobby Carpenter, if he could get him in the 2nd round, would be an ideal fit
The 3-4 does not help our defense at all. I love the 3-4, but this defense is built for the 4-3. Lets keep it that way.
that shouldn't stop us from signing a Sam Adams or Washington to be that guy to take double teams so robertson can flourish though...
