Rex is a second year head coach. I love the dude but let's stop pretending that he's a HOF genius coach for a second here. Hopefully he knows what he is doing, because he's been part of the first team that went through the Hard Knocks experience. But I'm not going to pretend that I know which kind of distractions will take focus away from a player's work in camp and which won't like some people are doing. I doubt anyone on this board has tried to get in a full training camp while being followed around by a camera crew and being forced to make testimonials constantly and being directed to walk around different parts of the facility pretending to be introspective. This is still a reality show.
Going to Cortland replaces friends/family time with team mate time. The camera's aren't going to replace team mates.
If you mean me, I'm not pretending to know, I'm going by what Rex said about it last year, which makes sense and has nothing to do with whether HBO is there or not.
Well, I'm just going to quit on this one, because nobody in Happhappyland thinks there is an adverse affect to the Real World syndrome affecting the team chemistry of a billion dollar football franchise. I'll enjoy watching the show, but I won't be surprised if a there are dissenting voices in the lockerroom afterwards. Although it seems that Bart Scott beat me to it in that regard.
That part of the post talking about people defining what kind of distractions will affect players in training camp. None of us know what kind of distractions keep these guys from focus. You can say that friends and family are the sole purpose of moving to Cortland, but that doesn't mean they are the sole type of distraction that will affect players that way.
Again, I was reciting what Rex said about moving camp last year and it seemed to get the results he wanted--according to him, not me. Don't shoot the messenger. Like you I don't know if this will be a good thing or not, but I don't think it makes Rex a hypocrite because this isn't the type of distraction he was talking about when he explained why he moved camp.
This is pretty much my thinking. I also agree w/abyzmul that the camera's could certainly be a distraction.
I'm in CuriousLand and HopelesslyOptimisticLand, but I could see this being a bit of a distraction. I didn't watch much of the others but I seem to remember the cameras just being there right? It's not like a reality show with some reveal room where the players can voice their complaints, now that would be distracting.
The cameras will take some getting used to, but it sure isn't as distracting as being only 20 minutes away from Manhattan.
If anything, I think people would argue it affects teams in the latter part of the season due to over-exertion in the preseason. I think most of those teams faded down the stretch.
It could be a way to sort out who can handle the attention and go about their business and who can't, not a bad thing to know about your players when you're a New York team coming off a playoff run. So maybe you learn things about some guys in camp instead of during the season, that's a possibility, too.

That's the thing, most of the shots taken from an actual camera crew is from afar on the football field. Probably not further than the average fan with a digital camera. They usually have players mic'd up (which is really no different than a regular season game when the NFLN mic's up certain players for NFL Films) so there's really no need to follow a player around. When they do address the camera, it's when they're on the sidelines and/or everyone is taking a break. Other scenes involve still shots of a camera installed in the corner of a room. These shots are usually used with regards to team meetings and front office talks or discussions. No camera crew is really present during those, and if they are, they're far in between. The only time that there's probably "a crew" when the players are hanging out amongst themselves. The same time they're allowed to cut loose and forget about football for the day. I hardly think during that period of time people they will lose focus. Sure, some players will "act out" in front of a camera on their down time, but I don't think it'll be enough to cause the kinda distraction that will make this team crumble to a 6-10 season.
