The 1st and 3rd rounder essentially means the player just signed a one year deal with us worth whatever. Nobody in their right mind will offer a 1st and 3rd for Cro and Holmes. Infact, if we had to give up Holmes and Cro both for a 1st and 3rd, I doubt there would be takers due to their off the field issues.
Due diligence. If by some highly unlikely scenario the uncapped year rules for free agency are maintained (can I stress highly unlikely?), you don't want to lose these guys just because you figured it was so highly unlikely that they would qualify as RFAs. All of them would be insanely cheap for one year if no one took the bait, and all would likely remain on the team. Still, it's insanely unlikely that it happens. The only way I can see it happening is if this drags on into July/August and the league decides that a massive free agent pool would be detrimental to the start of the season and does a one year extension on the rules.
Not worth whatever. Worth a fixed amount. A relatively cheap amount that would enable us to sign all of them for this year and give us time to rework new deals for the ones we intended to keep into the future.
Also, the 9ers could probably make it so we can't resign Holmes-the contract would say something like "Holmes gets a $10 million bonus if he plays in the meadowlands more than five times in 2011 and 2012" or some crap like that.
Thats what I meant. I just didn't want to search for the tender amounts on these players, but u get the point.
It's worth noting, though, that Edwards, as a vet with 6 years in the league, could never be an RFA, nor tendered as such. This news has no bearing on whether a deal is being worked out with him.
Thats what he means by saying "Jets have a the option to match the exact contract pretty much word to word.
Kind of, but I still don't know if the NFLPA would go along with it, even if it were threatening the start of the season.
Sure, but if we're looking at the 49ers' 1st and 3rd in a draft next year that will almost certainly have a rookie cap, I'd happily let them sign him away. I don't think anyone is going to give up a 1/3 for Holmes or Cro.
 Hahahaha... On an semi-related note, I'm not sure why people are still making the same old worthless Coleman jokes after last season.
IJR is right though. Let's say the league and players take forever to get a deal done....then they have a whole pool of FAs unsigned AND it's late. It would delay a start (their start rather) even further. they have to address this issue with deal talks.
The poison pill hasn't been used as much as people think. There seems to be some gentleman's code in the league where teams won't do it. It's a possibility because it is legal but not a certainty.
I imagine on the off chance they become RFA and these tenders stick, and the offchance someone is willing to part with some high picks, that we wouldn't work out a deal for a pick that isn't a 1st and 3rd
Ironically, and I know we just arbitrarily picked the 9ers here, but it could be payback for the Jets tampering with Crabtree. lol.
