Well, now the Jets HAVE to get one of those guys ready because Fitz could go down anytime with an injury. Ron
I think we all agree the draft is, at best a crapshoot. But most teams agree they expect their 1st 2 round picks to be starters. after that it gets muddy. Nobody drafts a player in the 1st 2 rounds and expects them to be a bust, those boom or bust players are targeted later in the draft
Yes he could! Hope springs eternal. I have little confidence that Bowles will start Petty any time soon even if Petty is ready now. I have a feeling the only way Petty will get on the field before the Jets have lost 8-9 games is if Fitz is injured or Woody/Mac order Bowles to start Petty.
It's called hedging your bets to make sure you get a decent QB. Mac would have been stupid to put all his eggs in a 4th round pick's basket. Maybe "grooming" isn't the right word, but everyone knew that both Petty and Hack were projects that needed some development.
I appreciate that nobody EXPECTS them to be busts......but to say they aren't targeted in the first two rounds discounts guys that have one outstanding trait but have shown nothing-- Dewayne Robertson, Mike Mamula, Troy Williamson, Darius Haywood-Bey, or guys who look the part but have shown nothing-- JaMarcus Russell, Curtis Enis, Blair Thomas, Steve Emtman, Vernon Gholston, Heath Shuler, Tony Mandarich; or super talented guys with serious personality problems-- Ryan Leaf, Todd Marinovich, Lawrence Phillips, Dimitrius Underwood, Jeff George. You can't tell me teams didn't know these were Boom-or-Bust guys when they picked them. Every single one of these guys had teams that wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole, but they also had multiple teams chomping at the bit to get at them.
In fact, I suspect it's MORE common to take Boom/Bust players early and play it safe in rounds 3 and 4.
I think the very latest scenario in which we'd see Petty is after the 8 Loss mark. it could be sooner, but that's the latest it will be. What none of us really know is whether Petty is physically ready to play, or mentally ready to play. the Jets have kept that very close to the vest, leaving all of us (including the media) to speculate whether Bowles is being too rookie adverse, whether they aren't high on Petty, whether Petty's injury was worse than we thought, whether they like Hack more, etc, etc... my guess is we see him after 7 Losses, or after the next really bad Loss, ready or not.. at that point, the Coaches will need something else to distract from their own shortcomings, and nothing bides more time than a shiny new QB.
No they didn't think they were boom or busts. They were all expected to be pro bowl players. Hell some people said leaf would be better then manning.
So you're telling me that 32 NFL general managers go into every draft thinking there are 32 Pro Bowl players available, and at least 64 regular NFL starters? In every draft? I suspect they're aware that maybe 15-20 of those guys will ever make even a single Pro Bowl, 5-8 might make it on a regular basis, maybe 1-3 will be Hall of Famers, maybe 60 of them will still be in the league in 5 years. Sure, they all HOPE the guy they pick will be the HOFer, and they HOPE half their draft picks will still be in the league in 5 years. To say they EXPECT it is probably not accurate. That said, it's perfectly reasonable for us and the front office to EXPECT them to not be busts. Equally, we should EXPECT to be disappointed.
If Petty's hurt, then fine, don't want to see him out there either. Nevertheless, there's something wrong when you have a second year QB and you say he doesn't have his timing down. Any QB in the NFL, project or not, backup or not, if he's on the roster, has to be prepared to play. That's just the way it is in the NFL. I'm sure if it was left to Petty or Hackenberg, they would say they want to play. There's nothing to be gained playing Fitz anymore. Sure Hackenberg might well struggle, but so what? Eli Manning had about as bad a start in the NFL as any QB I've ever seen. Lots of QB's have had to struggle at first. Let's see if he can overcome adversity. If not, the Jets should move on. I don't feel these QB's need to be coddled.
I sure hope that you're right about seeing Petty after the 7th loss. IMO if Petty is healthy, the only thing that would have him not ready to play is not enough snaps in practice.
I'm not wishing injury on him even as much as I detest him, but I'm not gonna shed a tear if he gets hurt, either. The "hope springs eternal" is that Petty will play sooner and it won't take an injury to Fitz for him to get a start.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. Petty was hurt and didn't practice for 6 weeks. Timing wouldn't just come back that quickly, especially when he's been playing scout team most of the year and not even throwing to or working with the starters. Being smart and trying to put them in a position to succeed is not "coddling" them. I'm sorry, but that's just silly imo. I agree that there's nothing to be gained by playing Fitz with the provviso that there is if Petty isn't ready due to his injury and going a long period without practicing. I agree that both Petty and Hack would prefer to play. They're competitors and want the opportunity to go out there and play.
I definitely think they should. I would prefer if Fitz never took another snap for the Jets. The Browns would be the perfect team for Petty to get his first start against, but Bowles said that Petty isn't ready. Whether Bowles is being too cautious/conservative/biased against young QBs, Petty was more seriously injured than the Jets let on, or just needs more practice, I guess time will tell.
I think you're right on this. The only caveat being that, even with Decker out, Marshall and Enunwa are still bigger possession type receivers who fight for the ball-- so our offense is less timing-critical than most. Still, if the QB is throwing comeback routes or back shoulder fades when guys aren't ready for them, a pick-six fest is coming.
maybe not 32 probowlers. maybe 16 for the top half of the 1st round and absolutely 64 starters. most teams probably find about 100 players they can see as starters. there are thousands of eligible draft players every year. The % of players form college that make it in the NFL is extremely low (less then 1%) so of course it's a crap shoot. but most teams seen Trent Richardson as the next Peterson and a future HOF at RB to lead the team for 10 years and look how he turned out. I'm sure teams EXPECT to be wrong on players, GMs are smart enough to know sometimes players just don't adjust well to the NFL even if the scouts think they are a can't miss prospect. But nobody uses a 1st round pick on a player they think won't be in the NFL in a few years. that's crazy. If they thought that, they wouldn't waste a high pick on them
problem is we don't have a true slot WR. kerly was but he is gone. decker was able to very well in 3WR sets but he's injured. Enunwa and marshall don't do well from the slot. They are outside guys. same for anderson and smith (if he comes back) Jalin could be but the jury is still out on him IMO. he still seems more suited for the outside. We need a smaller shifty guy to play the slot who can get us crucial 3rd downs. an edelman/welker type of player. It hurts even more without having a TE that can use the seam. Whats going on with ASJ?
