Actually I think JV last year was a "untouchable" cause of the previous hype. However, after the year he complied he is now damaged goods & I think Man is highly disappointed in his play & if possible will be looking to a huge upgrade at MLB which means JV will have to move out in any case
Write it in stone. Vilma will be a NY Jet in 2007. Unless some team is willing to sell the farm to get him he will be here. These guys don't make trades to make trades. This is trade is not a slam dunk for the Jets and thus will not happen. Winning organizations don't make trades like this. Teams like the Cardinals and Lions make trades like this. We don't belong to that group anymore.
who is that mysterious huge upgrade last year and you are ignoring my question, you said it was easy to find average players, well our DL had below average players last year, why if it was so easy to find players better?
So now you are happy to be forced to start a backup just for the sake of getting something for someone???
You do know that the Jets run a 3-4 Defense, right? I know you may have been too caught up complaining all season and looking back into the '60s, but in case you didn't notice, the 3-4 Defense has TWO, yes count 'em, TWO Inside Linebackers. That way, if we do get a "huge upgrade" at MLB, we could put him right next to Jon Vilma.
We never belonged in that group. We had two terrible seasons in a row and a lost half decade but we were never in the dregs category like the Cardinals and Lions-post merger. It's true that there are very few teams that have ever approached the futility of those two teams, however all of the teams that have looked at one point or another like they might join them (Bucs, Jets, Saints, Falcons, Bengals, Browns-post merger) have pulled themselves back to respectability short of the abyss.
a backup that ran for 1,000 yards. Also, the Jets wanted him badly before the season started when it was apparant Martin was not going to be able to play. Unfortunately we got Barlow instead.
Vilma is not damaged goods he's just not playing in a system that is particularly conducive to his "flying around and making tackles" play style. 3-4 linebackers are much more constrained by their responsibilities than 4-3 backers are and sideline to sideline speed while still valuable is not at a premium the way it is in a 4-3. 3-4 linebackers need to have more physical presence than Vilma brings to the table. Gotta be able to shed a 300 lb guard's block if that's what's in your face. If the Jets actually were to put out feelers on Vilma there would be a dozen teams lined up to bid, although maybe not at the same level they would have bid last year. Everybody smells a little bit of blood in the water here by now.
Go look up the Jets records since the merger and tell me with a straight face that they belong in the same category as the 200 games below .500 and 1 post season in 30 years performance of the Cardinals. Edit: Since 1976 the Cardinals are 122 games under .500. The Jets are 38 games under .500. You really think those two numbers belong in the same box? The Cardinals have made the playoffs once and the Jets have made the playoffs 10 times. You really think those numbers are in the same category? Denial is when you refuse to accept the things right in front of your face. That would not be me in this case. For those who are wondering: the Lions are 95 games under .500 in that period with 6 playoff appearances. Closer but still not remotely in the Jet's category.
We've also seen Dominic Rhodes, Mike Anderson, Duce Staley and Olandis Gary rush for 1000 yards, 1000 yard rushers are badly overrated now, and I can't even say that even means anything anymore, I'd say 1200 yards would be average
I don't like this trade but if we did do it we wouldn't necessarily have to draft another LB w/ the the 6th pick. Also the issue is not finding a LB that is better than JV; it's finding a LB that is a better fit. It is very much a possibility that if JV gets traded, the player that replaces him will not be a "better" player but a better fit. Your comment leads me to believe that if Vilma were to be traded to a team that suits his game and his #s spiked accordingly, you would be here posting that we got robbed on the trade as if he would have been able to do the same on our team.
He can do the same for our team if we actually had an dline, and quite frankly we don't need to risk looking like idiots with a move like this to get much betterat the spot we are in right now
I hate for it to seem that I'm on the same side as Champ on any subject but you are way off here. The isn't a slew of ILBs available via the draft or FA but there is enough. Secondly, if Vilma is traded, I'm certain his replacement would cost less.
The draft is a crapshot and name the people better than Vilma in FA, the reason why the replacement would cost less is because they aren't as good as Vilma
