Going to be a low cost boom or bust kind of signing, which certainly won't preclude us from drafting a back. I'm ok with it.
If the cost if low, why not? The Jets only have six picks, two of which are seventh rounders, so there's money out there. It's going to be an exciting year. At many positions, the roster has been completely redone. Really looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Still a chance Ridley doesn't make the final roster if he's not healthy. I like this move and it shouldn't stop us from drafting a back in the draft.
Yeah but that starts with the O-line, and right now that's the 2nd weakest link on the team (aside from the guy that stands behind it)
Disagree. Last year Powell had the most burst on the JETS with his limited opportunities. Also a RB gets alot more open space when you have the threat of Tom Brady behind center, and not a QB who can even take snaps under center
I like this signing, the 1-2 punch of Ivory and Ridley with Powell handling 3rd down duties for blocking and as a checkdown could be really effective, and I can see them carrying 4 RB if a gem falls the them in the mid rounds, I don't really think they will carry a FB on the roster unless its an HBack type that can also handle TE duties in a twin TE set
But now they don't "need" to take a back in the draft. There are other needs such as the line, to take care of. They also might need to trade some picks to get another QB (either moving up to draft or picks for one off another roster). This at least stop gaps a position. Though i still want them to draft an RB, especially if he's BPA.
This must be part of the plan to sign everybody that either didn't play at all last year or only played a few games.
Here's how I see it: Ridley will be Ivory's backup and a draft choice will play ahead of Powell. It could be like two different positions in a way.
They come cheap and all have potential to be more than what they were. I'm a fan of the strategy. We made our splashes, now it's time to take some chances.
A lot of teams are doing the same thing: signing guys cheap off of injuries and hoping they catch lightning in the bottle for one year. If the guy turns it around and shows he still has it he can get a better contract the following year,. Idzik did the same thing with a couple of players. On the other side of the coin do you sign a guy cheap off of a suspension or whose been in trouble. Hoping he can turn it around. Kind of the same principle. You can get your ass bit hard like we did with Goodson.
I still think they need to take a flyer on a RB that can catch passes out of the back-field, preferably in the later rounds. This draft is far too talented at tailback not to take one. Add the fact that Ivory and Ridley are both in contract years. The offensive line, I agree must be addressed - I think they can address that with one of the first 2 picks. Address that early. No to trading up btw.
