Montgomery Sounds like Bell 2.0 very good receiver. He'll spell Bell when he is playing for Bell. How is he in blitz pickup?
Low risk, high reward type of signing, I like it a lot. This guy creates a ton of mismatches coming out of the backfield.
Unless Cannon steps it up considerably this year, he shouldn't make the roster. He may wind up on the PS, but he needs to show that he can catch the ball.
As a former WR and with his attitude issues, I sincerely doubt that we'd want him trying to pick up a blitz. Sounds like the best way I know to put Sam in the ER. He isn't a very good receiver, either. His hands are questionable.
Are you sure you’re thinking of Ty Montgomery? His catch rate is higher than McGuire’s, on par with Powell’s and has been pretty well-known as a dual threat back since he made the switch.
yeah i like his run style but it's like he's carrying a greased up pig. he needs to pull the tiki barber and fix that. high and tight
The reason Cannon may make the roster is special teams. He did a good job as our gunner and he might expand his role if he can learn to hold on to kickoffs. I would think Cannon's special teams play from last year starts him off with a better chance of making the team than Montgomerey.
I disagree. The Jets didn't sign Montgomery to cut him. Unless the Jets do draft a RB, someone they like better is a camp cut, or Montgomery suffers a major injury in TC, he will be on the team. Cannon is too little to be anything than a gadget player on offense.
He's ok, but I think I read somewhere that his hands are somewhat questionable. He sure didn't catch a lot of passes from Rodgers.
Well, I could be mistaken. He didn't exactly light it up as a receiver in GB, and I think they gave him a lot of chances. I also think I read somewhere that his hands are somewhat questionable, but may have him confused with someone else.
The players that fill the last few roster spots need to be good special team players. As the year ended Cannon emerged as one of our best special teams players. I dont care what he does on offense he will be a hard guy to cut. Not to mention there is the possibility Gase might find a way to use his straight line speed. My bet is Cannon will be on the roster. If we are talking about the likelihood of cutting good special teams players. I would rank Tomlinson and Peake as much more likely cuts than Cannon. Tomlinson is interesting as he was very bad on offense but arguably our biggest contributor to our success on punt and kickoff returns. It will be interesting to see what core special teams guys stay. I really like the focus on keeping guys that contribute in this area over keeping marginal positional talent.
The backup RB spot is not one of the last few spots on the roster. Don't forget that Mac signed Bellamy and Brown, both of whom are supposedly very good STs players. I'm sure that some of the draft picks and UDFAs that Mac signs will be tried on STs as well. I don't think we'll will be able to keep many players who are strictly only STers. I think most will have to be able to contribute either on offense or defense. With Cannon's speed, it would be great if he could carve a niche for himself and contribute. Perhaps he will with this CS, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on it.
Guess nobody is going to ask my opinion. Odd. Nobody missed him when the door hit his ass when he was rightfully cut. He had some good games here, and there, but green bay has long been searching for the next good back since Green retired. He is a gadget type player yes, but he's more of a jack of all trades ace of none type. He definitely has upside, but I think all the praise of what a great signing it is is definitely over exaggerated.
Yes, that's how Macagnan and his Pretzel logic roll right now Load up with an arsenal of offensive weapons for Sam and have no blocking on the OL to speak of to pave the way for RBs He's hoping Tomlinson Herndon and Sterling will get some chip blocks in for Bell
It’s a good signing. And his “attitude” issues are overblown. He decided to take out a kickoff instead of taking a knee. Big deal. For some context, he played for Green Bay, where his QB was ignoring play calls and instructions from the sideline all game long for years. BUT he tries to make a play for his team and he’s the asshole that gets traded. Montgomery made the switch from WR to RB, that’s not possible if you have a poor attitude or are not coachable. He’s fine, 1 play should not define his career
You seem to be looking at this signing in terms of him becoming the main back. Nobody missed him in Green Bay because he's not a primary back. But that's not what his role will be here. He will be the backup to Le'veon Bell, which changes the entire outlook on his signing. All your points are valid, when viewing him as the #1
