The best part of the contract is no guaranteed money past 2015, easy out if Harvin works out or he somehow doesn't live up to expectations.
dont know if he would have got that much...his numbers are extremly low and us jet fans look at him with the green eyes...to other fans hes a low end player
Emmanuel Sanders Signed a three-year, $15 million contract. The deal includes $6 million guaranteed. Jeremy Kerley Signed a four-year, $16 million extension. The deal includes $5.4 million guaranteed.
Ugh I don't like the sound of that at all. If we can get a guy like Emanuel Sanders at that rate that makes Kerley expendable. However there are many different aspects than just the numbers. The opportunity to play with Peyton Manning and be on a super bowl contending team far out weighs playing with Geno Smith on a rebuilding team, so we would probably had to beat that price by a lot. Also Kerley is a home grown talent, we drafted him and he has been a great Jet. I see no reason not to reward him for what he has done. His fit in the offense aside, he has built a good relationship with Geno on the field and gives us some room to breathe if Harvin doesn't work out. Can you imagine the backlash Idzik would get if Harvin doesn't work out, AND Kerley left in Free Agency. It wouldn't be good.
I think there would be backlash only if Harvin didn't work, Kerley left via FA AND he failed to replace them in FA and the draft.
denver was one location I could've seen JK going to during FA. Welker's a concussion away from his career being ended, and he's a free agent next year. Kerley would be a younger less injury prone and maybe less expensive alternative to Welker, and would look above average with Manning throwing to him. not happening now thank god, but that was within the realm of possibility.
I have Emmanuel on fantasy this year and I know how good he can be (such as last night.) However, look at his career stats. http://www.nfl.com/player/emmanuelsanders/497322/careerstats Before getting Peyton as his Qb, Sanders never had more than 750 yards in a season and has never had more than 6 tds in a season (and that's his best season last year). Kerley had 827 yards in his 2nd season and 14 catches of 20+ yards (more than Sanders has ever had). Admittedly, he hasn't had more than 3 tds in a season, but that's with a consistently anemic offense and Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez throwing him the football. Kerley also gives the Jets a much higher % of first down catches than Sanders did for the Steelers. Again, I would still call Sanders the better player. But context is everything.
Speaking of context, I posted their contracts for some perspective which I hope added to the context of this discussion. Kerley is good in the slot but Sanders is threat both inside and out. Based on that I think it's fair to say that Sanders would have been the better bang for our buck. Side note: It's kind of funny you would write all that in defense of Kerley just to end with the bold.
That's fair, but let's remember that signing your own player is almost always easier than picking up another in free agency, especially at that price. Sanders likely liked the Broncos situation (as he should). He would not have come to the Jets at that cost. My last post was simply to explain that Sanders didn't have the numbers prior to Denver, so he was a cheaper contract than he maybe should have been.
These contracts are pretty different, when you break them down side by side you can see that. BS=Base Salary, PB=Prorated Bonus, RB=Roster bonus. Jeremy Kerley: Signing Bonus: $3 million Year 1: $2 million(BS) $.6 million(PB)=$2.6 million cap hit Year 2: $2.5 million(BS) $.6 million(PB)=$3.1 million cap hit Year 3: $3 million(BS) $.6 million(PB)=$3.6 million cap hit Year 4: $3.5 million(BS) $.6 million(PB)=$4.1 million cap hit (According to NJ.com his signing bonus was $3 million but the math doesn't add up. Unless his signing bonus was actually $2.4 million that they rounded up, or they did the math wrong and his annual prorated bonus should be $.75 million. Either way that's a difference of $.15 million per year which is basically nothing in terms of NFL cap.) Emmanuel Sanders: Signing Bonus: $3 million Year 1: $2 million(BS) $1 million(PB) $1 million(RB)=$4 million cap hit Year 2: $4 million(BS) $1 million(PB)=$5 million cap hit Year 3: $5 million(BS) $1 million(PB)=$6 million cap hit. Unless a player's base salary is guaranteed, the only part of an NFL contract that is universally guaranteed is the signing bonus. Bother Kerley's and Sanders' 1st year base salaries are guaranteed, but neither have any guaranteed base salaries afterwards. In each players fully guaranteed year, Kerley's cap hit is only 65% of Sanders'. in their second year, Kerley's cap hit only equates to 62% of Sanders'. In their shared years in the league, Kerley either eclipsed Sanders production (2011, 2012) or generated at least 70% of Sanders' production (2013) while spending time sidelined with injury. Take into account as well that in 4 years Sanders has never topped Kerley's 827 yards in a season. Considering before each of their contracts were signed, Kerley is younger and had a more productive year than Sanders had ever registered, this is an excellent contract for the Jets. Sanders' stats this year are a product of Peyton Manning, as were Decker's before. That is not a bad thing necessarily, and it does not mean they aren't good players. What you have to keep in mind is what Sanders was when he signed the contract. At that time he was more physically gifted than Kerley yet had never matched Kerley's best year. Keep in mind as well, that while Sanders had Ben Roethlisberger throwing him the ball, Kerley had an imploding Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. A Peyton Manning led offense will get more out of any skill player than any other team in the league, and that's the truth. Kerley would be extremely productive in Peyton's offense, there is no doubt about that.
I cant remember a time where Kerley flat out beat someone deep like Sanders does and did 2 nights ago. On the passes he may catch deep, always seems to be a jump ball situation that is up for grabs surprisingly. Kerley is decent though but Sanders is definitely superior.
i asked my friend who he thinks are the top 5 wr's are…one of them was emanual sanders..my jaw dropped…why is it when receivers that are with peyton there perception of them are so high but when there on another team ( decker) " they were just a product of peyton manning"…. can't wait till he retires and both thomas and sanders are stuck with a shit qb for years and everyone picks them in fantasy
