I figured some of it or it would probably mean not one of the 31 other teams in the league wanted any part of this bum. Can't see anybody taking a $0 guarantee otherwise.
I have a strong feeling more of Cro's money is guaranteed, and I also bet Idzik wouldn't guarantee Cro a starting position while Arizona would.
Not sure if this plays a role, but having 2 cornerbacks (Wilson and Patterson) that can play in the slot might be crucial. New England has Edelman and Danny Amendola.
Maybe he is confident that he'll be healthy, and was willing to take some kind of deal where he could get up to $3m depending on how many games he's healthy for? Or maybe other teams were only willing to guarantee a very small amount of his salary. I'm sure the teams weren't beating down his door, but he is very effective when healthy so I'm sure some team would have given him a deal at some point. I'd be surprised if the $3m was just a straight $3m, it's most likely got roster bonuses in there tied in to staying healthy.
Just because someone is injury prone doesn't automatically mean the guy can't at least play a majority of his games. True story, LaRon Landry before coming to the Jets was injury prone with the Redskins and neglected to have surgery even with the Skins despite the Redskin doctors really trying to push Landry towards getting it done. He comes over to the Jets..................started almost every game for us at a very high level(Didn't start last game of year @BUF because he was late to a team meeting). Signs with the Colts, missed time with injuries. Why can't we have another Landry type of a signing? There's just as much chance Patterson becomes a solid(Not saying he's Landry's type of talent at his position btw) cornerback on this 1 year deal just as much as there is him getting hurt.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN 15m Jets gave CB Dimitri Patterson a $1M signing bonus, $1.5M base salary & up to $500k in active Gameday roster bonuses
If this guy sucks and we don't make the playoffs next year I'm going to have some serious doubts in Idzik. We have the second most cap space in the league and bring this guy in for 3 million and let Cro walk for just 250k more. This roster spot should be Antonio Cromarties, I hope Dimitri Patterson is good, 4 ints and 6 games is impressive but I'd rather have the perennial pro bowler who had one bad year because of injuries than the 29 year old career nickel corner.
Dimitri Patterson is a good CB, many on the fins forum were hoping he would be resigned. It's been stated over and over in this thread his issue is staying on the field. If...he stays healty the Jets are getting a steal. But thats a big if.
you really think whether or not we make the playoffs is going to turn on whether we signed this average vet corner or kept the average vet corner we had? how we do this year is going to be determined to a very large extent on the performance of Geno at QB (or if he falters, Vick). We have gone some way to supporting him by signing the best WR FA available (after Jackson but I am really glad we didn't go for him) and are almost certain to go WR at least twice in this draft. There was no-one available in FA that would have tipped this team too far one way or the other - we are not a team that is one or two players away from greatness and I would much rather we didn't spend money as if we were but instead used the flexibility it gives us to help lock up some of the good players we have (like Wilkerson) to long term deals and building through the draft.
Even if he doesn't they worked the contract in a way that he gets nothing but the $1 million guaranteed. Cro has $3.25 guaranteed, even if he misses the whole season with injury. Basically, Patterson literally has to play to get paid. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2014...rties-contract-to-dimitri-pattersons-contract
I don't think Patterson was brought in to replace Cro. Patterson is not a cover corner and does not fit the role that Rex wants. But he does fit the role of a nickel corner quite well. Based on this signing its a good bet we draft a CB in rounds 1-4 and more likely rounds 1-3. Its a good year for drafting a CB. I can see Walls/ Wilson and the rookie competing for Cro's spot and Wilson/ Patterson competing for the nickel corner spot. Patterson allows Rex to be more creative and have more depth but I doubt he is here to replace Cro.
this is exactly what i figured the contract would be. very low risk/high reward. gotta love mehta leaving out the details when criticizing the team for this. man he is trolling jet fans hard and most jet fans just feed right into him
Lol people just don't get that just because a "sports writer" says something not only can it be totally misleading, it can be downright false. Writers feed off of dramatic headlines and over exaggerated claims, if you aren't a good writer it's all you've got.
I've often wondered why there are so few standards in journalism. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, nurses, etc., all have standards of care that, if they didn't follow, they've subject malpractice or revocation of their license. Fairly certain that they get away with it by branding their stuff as editorialization, but that still doesn't make it legitimate. Anyways, that's just a rant. Metha, Cimini, the lot of them are terrible in terms of their reporting, and they know that. Regarding the contract, it certainly looks good -- mitigates the exposure for our favorite team.
There's actually a great history of BS in American journalism, made most infamous by William Randolph Hearst (the inspiration for the film Citizen Kane). Hearst started with The New York Journal and spread nationwide. Ever heard of "yellow journalism"? It came from the exaggerated stories printed by Hearst and his arch rival Pulitzer that were basically full of libel and sensationalized stories made to gain readership. The same thing happens today but people are wrapped up in their daily lives that they just eat it up and beg for more. Wrong platform I know, but totally relevant.
Oh, man - you just threw me back into grade school . It's funny, the sites that I follow for the Mets don't really have the same kind of issues with reporting. Perhaps it's that baseball is just more numbers and fact based?
