Stop panicking. This isn't that hard to figure out. Jason Smith won't see a nickel next year. Thats 12 MIL off the cap. Digging deeper you can adjust Harris, Cro, Holmes and Mangold. You can find 12 MIL of salary and convert it to bonus to spread over future years. You can keep Revis' new deal at roughly the same cap number in 2013. Pouha will probably be adjusted lower as well. Easily manageable.
Wow..you really think so? Everybody already said Smith will be cut along with Scott and Pace. Holmes money is guaranteed, you aren't restructuring anything with him. Maybe a couple of the others will be willing but I don't know why as they will be free agents in another year or two anyway and it would cost the Jets too much to cut them. The numbers speak for themselves and everything else is conjecture. The Jets have a serious issue if there is no Jumbo cap and it's obvious that they know it. Just look at how little they spent this offseason despite sucking last year.
This is exactly what he says... "Of all the teams in the East the Jets are probably the one most likely to have to stay pat due to the cap in 2013, so barring trades, this may be the general team the Jets field the next two season. They have avoided the big dead money years other teams experience, but at some point dead money is no different or worse than carrying dead weight on their active roster. I would not be suprised if we see the Jets rumored to be actively shopping some big name players next year to gain more cap flexibility." http://www.nyjetscap.com/2012_Articles/jetssummerreview.php Of course we will have a team, nobody is suggesting otherwise but what is that team going to be? We lose a bunch of starters to free agency and cut a bunch of others. All of this because of how the cap has been handled. This is the last I will say on it to everyone's delight.
This is the wrong place for it and feel free to move it to a new thread if it has not already been posted - but here is a good article from nyjetscap about Tannenbaum and his moves. http://www.nyjetscap.com/2012_Articles/tannenbaumreview.php sadly its too long to post here but I urge people to read it.
Remind me again why we got rid of Steve Weatherford? Easily the biggest mistake of the Tannenbaum era, IMO.
Because westhoff didn't like him and he sucked in the playoffs for us. I'd say gholston is easily the biggest mistake of the tanny era.
You have to look deeper into the numbers. Smith's 12MIL is never getting picked up. Whatever is left this year carries into next year which is currently 8.1 MIL. By the end of this year maybe it's 5MIL that will carry over. Cap will go up about 1-2 MIL in 2013 and beyond. Harris and Cro are signed thru 2014, Holmes 2015, Mangold 2017. If they want to create space they certainly can. Here is how you can potentially do it with each guy. Harris- Due 11 MIL in salary in 2013. Converting 4 million of that salary or more to a guaranteed roster or signing bonus and spreading it over the last two years of the deal creates at least 2MIL or more in space next year. Similar to what they did with Brick. Mangold - Due 3.5MIL in roster bonuses. Convert to a signing bonus over the last 5 years of the deal or guarantee at a later date. Creates at least 2.5MIL in space in 2013. Cromartie - His cap # was low last year so 2012 and 2013 will be big cap numbers with him. However, his base salary and guarantees drop greatly in 2014 the final year of his deal. You can push 2013 salary into guaranteed money in 2014 if he is still performing after this year. You would be committing to him for 2014 at that point but you can get decent cap savings from him 2013. Holmes- Due 11MIL in salary (7.75 already guaranteed). He will be tougher to restructure in 2013 but if you really wanted to bite the bullet on the guy after 2012 he is revenue neutral after this year. It won't cost additional money to cut him whether he is on the team or not in 2013 and then you are free of him in 2014. It will be a bunch od dead money on the cap but you can do it.
Conor Orr @ConorTOrr Westoff said the jets have seen more punts with 5-second hang times since Malone got here "than we have in a long time." #jets Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Mike Westhoff drops a Reggie Roby reference. Nice. #nyj
To be fair, Weatherford could have been Superbowl MVP if punters were respected as normal players. (I'm not completely serious, but he did play extremely well in that game as well as the entire season and playoffs as a Giant)
