49'ers got him for almost nothing. We could probably go lower. His contact in 2011 was heavily incentive based.
If we get Manning, Sanchez is gone. That would save an additional ~9 million to sign Manning. Don't know what the restructure is for Sanchez.
We won't be getting Manning. There's no way it would work under the cap. Get a clue. This isn't Madden.
At those kind of numbers, it would be nice if we were able to reach a buyout with Calvin Pace to save about $5 million on the cap. The money could go to a younger, much more effective pass rusher like Cliff Avril who could leave Detroit if the money isn't right. Mario Williams looks destined for the franchise tag if a long-term deal doesn't get done and could be shopped for a top CB or S to add to their secondary. I am of the opinion that we should try to sign Cliff Avril AND draft Courtney Upshaw in the first round if he is available when we're OTC. Going from slow OLBs with no pass rush to fast, talented LBs and an extremely talented pass rush could bring us back to #1 defensive form in a hurry. Our offense looked horrible this year because our defense all of a sudden became soft and we were either playing from behind or failed to protect a lead so we could run the ball -- which is what our offense is built for. We can sign an undervalued WR in free agency (Braylon for one more ride on the merry-go-round or a guy like Robert Meachem out of New Orleans) to pair with Santonio. I clamored for Dashon Goldson last offseason, especially at his lowered asking price, but unfortunately we didn't pull the trigger and he had a Pro Bowl season in San Francisco. Safety is a position we can address in the 2nd round and still get the best safety in the draft. EDIT: For those of you wondering about Maybin, I am a big fan of his as a PSU fan but he's all pass rush and no run defense. It is not a coincidence that our run D tanked with Maybin getting a considerable amount of playing time for us. He can be sufficiently blocked by some running backs, which is very bad news for a 3-4 OLB. He can stay but as a 3rd down specialist and to sub in.
We need one of these big time Free Agent WRs. Bowe, DJax, VJax and Colston, we have to get one of them.
I believe that Dashon Goldson is an unrestricted free agent, he just signed a one year deal with the niners Madieu Williams is another niners safety that should be a free agent this year.
No we don't, and we probably can't afford one of them (thank goodness). That is not the way to build a team.
I must have missed this article, apparently the Sanchez contract 'restructure' wasn't much of one and is irrelevant to the current cap space the Jets have. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2011/12/jets_make_minor_changes_to_mar.html
How do you suggest we fix our receiver problem? It was a mistake re-signing Holmes, but certainly, sitting by watching other teams snatch up these big time players is not the answer. If we're not going to go after one of these guys, then we need to use our 1st round pick on a WR.
Nothing to new here but an interesting article/blog on Spotrac (a great site for salary and contract info)
Well apparently they were in the hunt for Nnamdi Asomugha which was a pretty bit FA signing, so I think they are definitely looking for a bigger name player to bring in.
Yes he will be a free agent -- but now coming off of a Pro Bowl season in the NFL's most impressive defense he will cost much more than he would have last year. Due to the lockout he got lost in the shuffle as a free agent and signed basically a one year, $1 million contract. Now he's probably looking at 4 years, $20-$24 million and the Jets can't afford that.
Does unused cap space [the approximate $8.5 million] carry over (and benefit the Jets) from 2011 into 2012?
We do neither. If we sign Edwards and/or Meachem who are 1/4 the price of all the big name WR’s and draft a solid WR in the 3rd or 4th, we are looking pretty good. This draft is very deep at WR and it would kind of be stupid to spend our 1st rounder on a WR when we have bigger wholes (OL and OLB).
They can afford that, especially if they backload the contract because the cap in 2013 is significantly higher then 2012.
