Peake will get scooped up for potential alone.

I agree with both of your basic premise. You don't want to lose a game due to a missed FG or extra point.

I disagree that Martin doesn't have a shot. He was a very reliable kicker at Duke, and so far, has been every bit as good and consistent as Folk. Don't forget that Folk is coming off an injury, so that could affect him at some point. Now that Wilk and Fitz are back in the fold, cap space or a $3 million cap savings probably won't factor into Bowles' decision that much unless, an injury happens during TC or preseason and they think they need to sign a vet camp cut and need the money.

I think Folk will probably get the nod, but it's quite possible that Martin could beat him out if Folk falters in preseason games and Martin doesn't.

I think saying that "no coach would be comfortable with a rookie PK over a proven vet" is a bit of a stretch. IMO it all depends upon how a coach views his teams and its chances for the playoffs for the season. If a coach thinks his team has a very good shot at making the playoffs, then yes, he probably will opt for the vet, but if he doesn't, or if that proven vet is getting up there in years and the rookie looks very good and as if he could be the team's place kicker for the next 5-10 years, then the coach may opt for the rookie if he has confidence in him.

Of course it helps to look at history and what other teams have done, but that's not a predictor or guarantor of what will happen. All it would take is one team who had a lousy WR corps ala the Jets just a couple of years ago, a team who needed another WR, a team who lost a starter in TC, or a team who drafted after the Jets who liked Peake and was planning to draft him, and Peake's gone. The Pats for one aren't exactly overloaded with WR talent. The Panthers are another. They're even giving Stephen Hill a shot at making the team.

You could be right and perhaps no one would pick him up, but if he continues to flash and then plays well in preseason games, it would increase the likelihood that another team might grab him. I'd sure hate to take the chance and lose him, particularly to keep a player like Bohannon, Jarvis Harrison, or even Brandon Shell (just to name a few).

Yes he has, but weren't most or maybe even all of those before Bowles and Maccagnan arrived on the scene (2013 - 2014)? If so, they have no loyalty to him. We know that kickers can go from hero to goat quickly and from very good, if not great, one season to abysmal the next. KOs may be a determining factor as well. I can't remember...did Folk have a lot of touchbacks on kickoffs? If so and Martin struggles in that area, then that would guarantee Folk the job, but the opposite could also be true.

Walt Powell comes to mind top of my head.
Ariz tried putting him onto the PS, and the Jets picked him up.

Powell was a 6th rounder, but Peake is a more interesting prospect than Powell if he makes it thru preseason healthy.

it's not too uncommon at any position really..
there is risk in putting a promising prospect on the PS. they really need to expand the 53 roster limit, but that's another subject altogether.
I wouldn't risk losing Peake for Ross, unless Peake shows he clearly isn't ready yet, or can't stay healthy.

Who's returning punts? That's prolly more important. Really hoping we can get better there

Well the first Bills game comes to mind. I was in favor of going for it the first time, but in retrospect, if we kicked the field goals, we win the game. The criticisms are minuscule compared to our previous coaches, but he was 1/5 on challenges, and like I said it's not a huge criticism but there's certainly room for improvement, and the challenges are there to be used. I enjoyed having timeouts at the end of the game, but the Philly game comes to mind in poor clock management.

Bowles has all the makings of someone who can be an elite coach in this league. I just hope he learns from some of the mistakes he made and continues to improve. If he does, he'll be a top guy in this league.

Bowles went for it on fourth down three times down the stretch of the first Bills game. We remember the two that failed but we forget the one that succeeded and led directly to a TD. It was a 4th and short from our 47 after we had turned it over on downs the previous series. My point is that had Bowles been conservative on 4th downs, we would've been down 9 on the final series rather than 5. So IMO Bowles didn't screw up the decision making, it just didn't work out.

fair enough. I just didn't know what you were referring to. I wasn't really challenging your thoughts. There is room for improvement as there should be with a second year coach

Based on the first preseason game (I'm not commenting on the obvious guys like Fitz or Leonard Williams who are guaranteed to make the squad.)

The following guys improved their chances of making the roster / Practice Squad
    Offense -
QB - Petty did well and looked like a pro, needs to work on reads etc. but not the disaster we read about early in camp.
RB - Williams looked good before getting dinged and R Morris showed speed and elusiveness with ball in hand. Howsare did well and may push Bohanon
WRs Peake, J Marshall & Ross. Anderson (illegal hands to the face backed them up but got them an extra play) and Worthy also made cases for longer looks.
OL Dozier & Ijalana both started showing where the CS see depth - Craig Watts ran with the 2's ahead of the likes of Harrison which was a surprise for me - although Harrison seems to be being converted to a T based on depth chart.
TE Bostick & Suddfeld both flashed getting a catch.

    Defense
DL - Claude Pelon and particularly Shelby Harris did well for me. Few others really did well.
LBs Carter, Martin and Barnes made no major errors and all made a few plays
CBs / Ss - Burris flashed but looked raw, Miles put some good hits on people but made some minor errors, Middleton showed he belongs at this level and even got a pick but really missed late a tackle in the third

The following guys reduced their chances of making the roster / Practice Squad
RB - Pierce & Tucker both failed to play and therefore slipped due to positive shows by others
WR - K Williams as Ross and J Marshall made plays while he again sat.
OL - J Harrison did not get on from what I heard, Kyle Friend (reserve centre) and Mike Liedke (reserve guard) both had holding penalties.
CBs / Ss - a few problems here at the bottom as Keeton was a step behind his guy on the Middleton pick and if the throw had led the WR it would have been a TD. Bailey had a penalty and missed a few tackles and left Milliner with no deep help Vs Robinson.
K - Ross missed the 2 field goals but TB really got in his ear after the first which he pulled BADLY to the left (kicker's view)

FO are struggling to find RBs who are healthy

Jets signed RB Lache Seastrunk and waived/injured RB Matthew Tucker - only signed earlier this week,

    Practice Saturday 13/08/16

McLendon, Reilly, Forte, Middleton, Pierce, Martin not in pads. Khiry Robinson and Muhammad Wilkerson were in individual drills but NOT in team drills

McDougle, Thompkins, Catapano and Kyle Williams all retuned to team today.

Lache Seastrunk picked up off the street as another RB is waived injured.

Today the Wide receivers were absolutely MANHANDLING the cornerbacks on one-on-one drills – Milliner was not involved but was in team sessions.

    QB

Fitz was particularly sharp and had zip on his deep passes, hit the Marshall boys and Decker for plays of 30+ yards. Later joked about his "noodle arm" andf he he surprised Decker when the ball travelled 50 yards to hit him in stride!!

Geno was hot for the most part but ended with a pick and had one other throw nearly picked. However following practice there's no competition between Geno Smith and Bryce Petty for No. 2 QB, per Todd Bowles – the “job belongs to Smith”. Smith did not talk to reporters either today or after the Jags game - they are making a big deal about it but for me a "back-up" is not required to talk. Unless he goes lights out in both TC and pre-season he is the No 2 (and probably needs Fitz to have a melt down to boot)

Petty was good for the most part and played well but had a few sail - sounds like he is improving with every rep

Hack got in for a few reps but had an issue with a snap. Kyle Friend had to run a lap after Christian Hackenberg couldn’t handle the ball out of the gun – has to be close to the end of the line for Friend now.

    RB

Rontez Miles leveled Romar Morris knocking him senseless and resulting in a fumble – Morris was very slow getting up and left practice with a shoulder injury – could end his camp.

Powell again did well both on the ground and out of the backfield – pity we have not seen Forte but Pierce lucky to be still hanging around having been unable to suit up since signing

    WR

Who do you choose – they ALL did EXCELLENT today and this competition is really hotting up – even more than the weather at TC today.

    TE

Did not see too many completions to TEs – Winslow and Suddfeld but no mention of Amaro today.

    DL

They had a good scrimmage breaking up numerous running plays for loss - may be the lack of quality at RB helped (apologies if a little too cynical)

    LB

Josh Martin got a look early in place of Mauldin and Taiwan Jones got to replace Harris in team drills. Jones looked good when stuffing a run by Bohanon (in due to other RBs being injured), Darron Lee also ran with the 1’s. Lee did get truck-sticked by Bohanon but came back and popped Bilal hard a few plays later but the best part was he didn't seem out of position once today

Bishop also made a few TFL and Mauldin returned with renewed effort later making a few key stops in the session.

    CB

Revis in particular had a rough day as Brandon Marshall and Decker took turns beating him

Milliner was not put in early with Burris getting his reps – not sure if related to the Jags game or something else but he got in later. Sounds like they all had a hard day at the office

McDougle practiced today. Looked pretty good for his first day back. Had a couple mistakes but mostly good in limited reps

    S

Same a comment by NC Jetsfan re who would make team – FO signed both Bailey and Martin last season off the Seahawks which for me means all things being equal they would retain them over Miles who is a holdover from previous regime. Miles has the lead on Bailey after the last week IMO and with Martin not practicing he too may be in trouble as Middleton has been strong. This appears to be the case as today Bailey took off his uniform on sideline in frustration. It sounded like he was upset about lack of opportunities but came back strong when he picked Geno to end the session – nice save and maybe this turns things around for him.

IMO the Jets should take Amaro and Davis at TE and cut the rest. Use the spot on another WR. Something like 4 QB, 3 RB, 2 TE, 7 WR (Devin Smith on PUP so not included), and 9 OL for a total of 25 guys, 26 if you want to keep Bohanon.

    Sample:
    Fitz, Geno, Petty, and Hack.
    Forte, Powell, and Robinson.
    Davis and Amaro.
BMarsh, Decker, Enunwa, Thompkins, JMarsh, Peake, and Ross.
Clady, Carpenter, Mangold, Winters, Giacomini, Dozier, Ijalana, Qvale, and Shell.
    Bohanon if Gailey insists.

I could live with this roster I just think Shell goes to the PS and either Johnson or Harrison make the line

Initially, I thought the same, but I think Shell was playing LT the other night, and don't think Harrison even played. I'm not sure about Johnson.

It would be a crime if Bailey or Martin make the team over Miles. Miles is always around the ball, you need players like that. Very instinctive safety and we don't want to see Marcus Williams out there playing safety either.

Jets signed RB Terry Williams (a player they had in camp for a day and waived previously) and DL Jake Ceresna (A 6-5, 295-pound defensive end, Ceresna had 63 tackles in 12 games, including 18 for loss. He had 9.5 sacks, six passes defensed and 17 quarterback hits. He also forced two fumbles.).

DL Christo Bilukidi left the team and they waived WR Anthony Kelly

Bilukidi is the second player to leave / not report this season - needed an RB after Morris and Williams got dinged up and the competition at WR made Kelly expendable even as a camp body
