Day 8 Another day of practice in full pads Injury Report Dexter McDougle, Ronald Martin, Zach Sudfeld, Wes Saxton, Kyle Williams, Matt Forte & Bernard Pierce. QB Fitz had 3 passes tipped and 2 ints. He went 2/6 when targeting Marshall covered by Revis. Noted 2 TDs Early on in positional drills Geno hit Robby Marshall with gorgeous out-n-up bomb over Marcus Williams but some reports state he is cooling off. Will put up stats when I find them RB Forte did a full work out indoors away from media per Bowles. TE Amaro had a really nice day with multiple catches continues to have a strong camp and really looking like he will nail down the starting job WR B Marshall had a frustrating day being covered by Revis Got some revenge when he beat Revis with a double move for an 80 yrd TD – later threw a “punch” and needed others to break up the confrontation – Fitz and Enunwa. All reports state some “choice words” exchanged J Marshall had a few nice catches DEFENCE LB Catapano and Bishop got some first team reps team drills at OLB in place of Mauldin, Jenkins – may show the pecking order for reserves? Later on Mauldin tipped a Fitz pass leading to an int (a pick 6 by Stanford) before later stuffing R Morris in the backfield CB Revis really stood out and showed he is near 100% healthy Burris continues to have a strong camp and had a pick of Geno who tried to hit Peake on a deep pass. Later he collided with Bostick and seemed to get hurt after collision. Laid on the sideline for a bit before walking slowly off with a trainer S When Amaro was hit for a TD by Fitz DB coach Joe Danna was not happy with his Safeties on the play as they were unorganised pre-snap. Seemed to work as later Proyr undercut a route to pick a throw by Fitz Some more positive remarks about UDFA Doug Middleton, had a sack of Fitz aas well as batting some passes away TEAMS There's a different vibe this year for the Jets' special teams. First-year coordinator Brant Boyer is a fiery coach, not afraid to call out a player if he makes a mistake. Talent helps, too. The Jets are searching for a quality kickoff returner.
I'm not trying to be a hard ass or make you look bad. I'm just telling you what I know from training and experience. It's hard for the brain to focus on more than one thing at a time. When one is trying to make a major change in a body mechanic, one needs to focus on that one thing only. In the article the other day, Hack said there are 4-5 things he is working on that are components of his accuracy issue. He'll probably need to focus and work on each one of those things separately, then combine two, then three, then all of them. This has nothing to do with "not all players learn the same exact way." Nobody runs before they walk. That's ridiculous. It's not such a simple matter of having Hack take a step back if he falls. If that happens, at best it will delay his development, and can damage his confidence. Yes, the coaches need to to gauge each player individually, ascertain how he is learning and advancing, but I'll bet that very few coaches are trained in pedagogical concepts. Their expectations may not be realistic, of when a player isn't learning the way he coaches, he may not be able to take another approach. Many simply coach or try to teach the same way their coaches did when they were players. I'm not acting as if anything. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter if he's playing against grocery bag boys or first stringers. He's still trying to perform. We all know that players need to react and not think too much on the field. At this point in time, in order to improve/fix his accuracy, he NEEDS to think about what he's doing when he throws the ball. He needs to think about his feet, his arm angle and all the various concepts that he is working on now to improve his accuracy. When one is playing, one can't do that. If one does, then one won't be very successful playing. He needs to have time and isolated work on his throwing mechanics. Then when they are becoming "natural" and automatic, he can move on to taking more snaps and playing. Even then, there are no guarantees, but that will give him the best chance to succeed and develop into a quality starter. I totally understand your excitement and eagerness to see what he has. It's better for him if we don't, however. It's better for him to let him do the work he needs to do on his mechanics and then see what he has. He'll be more confident, more relaxed, should perform better and we'll like more what we see.
A little Housekeeping On Friday Fitz went 15/25 with a few errant throws – Geno was also so with Petty seeming a little more at home. DNP – CB Burris and Mc Dougle / S Martin (birth of his child) / WRs Thompkins (unknown reason) & Williams / OLB Reilly (unknown) / RBs Forte and Pierce Titus Davis retired and was replaced by Chris King who was claimed from the Falcons via waivers SATURDAY QB Fitz was mixed again with S Bailey dropping the ball instead of making the pick. Geno was ropier with 1 int and 2 others almost picked. Petty was also so-so with some good and some bad. RB Powell has done well and both Morris and Williams are making the most of their reps – both are also getting a look on returns to see if they can make the roster that way. Three running backs have not practiced--Matt Forte(hamstring),Khiry Robinson(leg) andBernard Pierce(hamstring). Robinson is on the mend and was seen doing summersaults in the training area while I feel they want to keep Forte in cotton wool but for me Pierce’s time is running out. TB hinted as much when he said hard to make the squad if you’re unable to get on the field. WR Both Marshalls continue to shine as does Decker – Peake’s name beginning to be mentioned more and Enunwa getting a lot of reps and making plays – a 7 yrd diving catch for a TD. TE Here again 2 guys on the bubble are not practicing – Sudfeld and Saxton giving an opening to Bostick if he can take it. Amaro continues to shine and have a strong camp although Davis may keep his spot due to his blocking. OL Ijalana got most reps on Saturday @ RT while Shell has hardly been seen with the 2’s to date. Qvale has also being subbing for Breno while he is on PUP. Winters seems to be locking down RG spot and feels it is a more natural fit – want to see in games. DL Hard to call this as several have flashed with Simon having a strong camp per multiple reports and Obioha becoming a mini ball magnet we could lose a few who may not make the PS if waived. LB Mauldin and Jenkins took reps again after being spelled Friday – Lee is not seeing too much time and may not get on the field early with Carter looking good at times. Bishop made a play getting in for a sack. CB Here again Skrine continued his strong camp but Williams was better after being picked on abut earlier in the week. Revis was not on B Marshall at all. D Morris also flashed with an int of Petty S Gilchrist picked off Smith on a nice play while multiple others have flashed – here again tough competition. Teams The kicking competition between veteran Nick Folk and rookie Ross Martin couldn’t have been more even Saturday. Each connected on all three of their attempts late in practice, with Martin looking especially impressive when the Duke product overcame a bad snap and bad hold to knuckleball through a 47-yardereven when the holder positioned the ball being on its side – Folk still in pole position but it is a tough one to call. New special teams coordinator Brant Boyer continues to make his presence known. Boyer is no wallflower and usually can be found stalking the sidelines and getting into the face of any of his special-teams charges he thinks are underperforming.
Day 10 - Monday Not practicing: Forte, Reilly, Pierce, Saxton, K. Williams, McDougle, Ronald Martin Khiry Robinson activated from PUP and is in pads, Sudfeld also returns. Decker rested – gave Peake more reps to try and shine. Also made a few bottom of the roster changes, Chris King whom they claimed to replace Titus Davis did not report and they signed Anthony Kelly from Kutztown (6’2” & 210 lbs) who was in the Bucs camp until last week. They also waived Obioha with an injured designation (pity as he had flashed) and signed Christo Biluidi (6’5” & 310 lbs) formerly of several others. QBs Fitz had an off day started 0-2 and it seemed to stay that way with QB & WR on different pages per multiple sources in the early going. Fitz had 2 passing TDs but both required the receiver to make “a hell of a catch” (B Marshall & Amaro) and a run where he could not dunk the ball over the post - TWICE. He improved in the second portion to make some decent throws and recovered well to lead the team on several drives culminating in a TD – best passes to Enunwa (over Revis for a TD) and Worhty – between 2 defenders. Geno was on fire and had the best day any QB has had to date – 6 TDs and seemed to be able to make any throw he wanted (Peake / J Marshall / Enunma and Worthy). Issue was with taking sacks on a 2 minute drive but he recovered to ensure finished with a TD. Petty started strong with nice throws to Peake and Anderson (beat Short) but was off and nearly picked later by both Burris and Sandford. Hack stayed on long after the others left doing drills & working on fundamentals. RBs Powell had a good day making cuts and getting freed by the OL. Williams was second back in – maybe ahead of Romar Morris. WRs With Decker resting J Marshall, Worthy, Enunwa & Peake all shone – Ross also flashed late on per reports. This will be a tough call at the bottom end of the roster and may explain Davis’ decision to retire. TE Amaro the only 1 I noted in reports OL / DL No mention on either side. LBs Mauldin and Jenkins both flashed with Jenkins recording a sack of Geno. CB & S All got burned with the following getting mentioned particularly Williams, Miles, Burris x2 and Short (major negatives) Teams Nick Folk and Ross Martin both went 6-for-6 in FGs. Ross and J Marshall to get PR duties on Thursday
Practice 11 – Tuesday Mo Wilkerson activated from PUP – this means just Breno and Devin Smith on PUP. DNP list is as follows- Forte, Reilly, Saxton, Ronald Martin, Pierce, Kyle Williams, McDougle. All but Forte & McDougle are squarely on the bubble so need to get back ASAP. Ryan Fitzpatrick rated 25th among QBs by NFL insiders. Per depth chart it is the same for PR & KR – J Ross / K Williams / R Morris / J Marshall QB Both Fitz and Geno had good days tossing multiple TDs to WRs and TEs. Fitz starting strong and seems to be rising to the improved showing by Geno. Petty also had an up day while Hack still feeding on scraps (2 PDs by Burris covering J Marshall). WR Peake has really flashed again today and is making a run at the final 53 – beat Burris deep for a long TD on a pass from Geno and his name mentioned more than once. J Marshall also flashing again today and was earlier getting tips from B Marshall on how to gain and use leverage Vs CBs. TE Amaro is continuing to have a strong camp but got nicked – continued to play but keeping an eye on it. Some reporters see Bostick as in the running to make final 53 man roster. Sudfeld back in pads and making plays - had a sliding catch from Petty and another TD on a throw from Geno. Recent posts indicate the competition will make final slot at TE an interesting choice – we may have a respectable amount of output this season OL Heard Clady has been quietly strong all camp and “owned” Mauldin on a few plays today as he had an “exceptional” practice. CB Revis was making life hard for QBs & WRs shadowing well w/o an int. Williams was beaten a few times today and has struggled regularly per reports through camp – he did well as the 3rd 4th CB last year but better competition was always a risk to expose any deficiencies. Maybe he will step up in actual games but it opens the door for Milliner – great to see strength in depth here as compared to 2014!
I read an article today that said not to put too much stock into the depth chart, particularly as it pertains to Jalin Marshall, as it wasn't "official." By all reports, he's had a great camp and I think he could quite possibly make a good contribution this year as the PR and KR and even as a WR. I don't think he would clear waivers. The same goes for Charon Peake. One one hand, I'm glad that he's starting to flash and show real potential, but OTOH, I don't think that both Marshall and he would make the team, and the loser probably wouldn't make it through waivers. It's very encouraging to hear about the competition among the TEs. I've seen positive things said about Bostick a couple of times and now Sudfeld. And of course, Amaro's been having a very good camp. We could actually have a quality contribution from the TE position this year. What a refreshing change that would be! It's even more encouraging to hear that Clady's been having a strong camp and starting to flash. We really need him. If Carpenter and he can lock down that left side of the OL and Winters and Ijalana or Qvale just hold their own on the right side, the offense could put up some serious points this year. I knew that Ross Martin was a reliable kicker and very accurate, but didn't realize that he had such a strong leg. It would be awesome if he could beat Folk out. That would give us some cap space and would give us yet another young, up and coming player on the roster. It's starting to look like if Geno, Petty or Hack can develop, we could be a serious contender within a year or two. It's hard not to start getting excited.
Amaro's supposedly improving as a blocker. Let's hope so. I think I've read that Bostick is a decent blocker. He's supposedly been having a pretty good camp and could beat out Sudfeld. In that scenario, I'd think that Bostick would play the inline TE and Amaro the HB. I also expect that Davis will still be on the team, so most 2 TE sets would be Davis and Amaro, barring injury or surprise.
If the Jets line up with two TE's for more than 1% of their entire plays this season it would be a lot.... and I would be shocked. Too many talented WR's on this roster for that type of formation.
Bostick apparently has a really good shot to make the final roster. I hope he makes it over either Sudfeld or Davis. He can block. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
This. I think the "base" formation will be amaro enunwa decker marshall with forte/powell in the backfield. A big physical almost interchangeable guys in routes and decent enough blockers.
At this point, assuming Devin Smith starts the season on PUP, the Jets should probably keep 6 wrs. Marshall, B Decker Enunwa Thompkins Marshall, J Peake
I agree that they should and probably will keep 6 WRs. Do you think they'll keep the two rookies over the vet Ross? That would be pretty bold, but would signal that the Jets have a lot of confidence in Marshall both as a returner and receiver and in Peake.
Do most here see Thompkins' roster spot automatic or close it? Maybe it's just me, but i don't find him impressive at all, and unlike some others he's been around the league for a little bit so I'm not sure there is much hidden upside at this point either..
I don't think he's automatic by any means. In fact I'd be worried if I were him. He was cut in other places because he is not much of a special teamer so he's got to stand out at WR. If this Marshall kid and this Peake kid can be even close to how he looks at WR, and it appears they are, Thompkins might be out on the street again
glad we are on the same page...I agree 100%. I'd much rather go with a kid with a higher ceiling, who can play ST, than Kenbrell. Where KT probably does have an edge, is that if a Marshall were to miss any time for 1 reason or another, the coaching staff probably has some more comfort turning to him the fill those shoes rather than an unproven rookie. That is really KT's only worth as I can see it at this point.
yeah not even just injury but the 2 kids have to show they are consistent. A couple days of success in camp isn't enough but being consistent and ready to perform throughout training camp and the staff would be less likely to hang onto the vet. Its a trust thing as this point. Which is funny because its not like Thompkins is a long time trusted vet or anything but he's gunning for a spot against a bunch of greenhorns.
I think so re Jeremy Ross. I think if J. Marshall can show he can handle the PR duties, it makes Ross expendable. I would hate to see the jets try to sneak Marshall or Peake through waivers and then regret it for the next 6 years. Both players have such upside that it's worth the risk of keeping their inexperience on the 53.
