I would rather they move on as well, but I don't think their chances of signing Reiff, Whitworth or Okung are good at all. Would you sign with the Jets if you were an LT? I sure wouldn't. That leaves the draft, and this is not a good draft for OTs, much less LTs. Think of Clady as insurance. He's better than Ijalana.
I agree. I think Ramczyk or Bolles have a better chance of starting their rookie season than Robinson.
Another wise move??? Dude what are you seeing/thinking? Other then drafting a DT that fell to them who they didn't even "need". What signing/draft pick has made a impact?

When I try to evaluate the GM, I look at the areas that are the sole authority of the GM (managing the cap, contract negotiations, signing FA's.) In these areas Mac has done a very good job. He stole Brandon Marshall, Forte was a good value, even bringing in his starting QB for 2015 on a 6th round pick was a good deal. These were all impact players brought in at good value by the GM. 2016 sucked, Everyone was at fault. This has been written about ad nauseum. But it is very difficult to separate out whether underperforming draft picks or free agents are the fault of the scouts, the GM, or the coaches. People knock the Hackenberg 2nd round pick, and its very likely they are correct. But from what I recall, the entire front office was enamored with him. Mac, Bowles, Gailey and Woody all visited him and spoke highly of Hack. It was a group decision. Of course the GM gets the blame and maybe could have gotten Hack later. We will never know. But you cant tell me that Mac hasn't made some good deals, at least at the time the deal was done. If Bowles bad coaching ends up making Macs deal look bad is that on Mac or is it on Bowles? (and Woody.)
Somebody needs to explain why this is a good move for the Jets beyond the extremely unlikely proposition that Clady manages to play his first injury free season in 3 years at the age of 31. There's no scenario in which the Jets are better off with Clady as the starting Left Tackle game one with a vested contract unless he actually plays all 16 games - which is very unlikely. Clady looks good in camp, the salary vests for the year and...
Its a good move in that they have a fall back option. yea its overpriced but I'd rather know that right now he is worst case scenario then just staring at an abyss when free agency starts.
I'll tell you exactly what's going to happen, he will look good in camp and preseason, the jets will sign him to that 10 million dollar salary, he is going to get hurt in the 5th or 6th game and Ijalana will be the LT for the remainder of the season. The line will look sloppy again, no blind side protection for our QB and this forum will be up in arms again blasting Mac.
I understand the theory of the move but if you cut him, I'm sure there is a chance you can get him back at a lower salary then 10 million. Do you think anyone else is going to give a 31 year old unreliable FA LT $10 million dollars? I'm sure the market for him is probably 4-5 million with his history.
this shouldnt be about how clady looks in camp if his potential replacements look good then hes a goner. if not, i would hope that they work out a contract that pays clady based on his availability/health that should be the plan ... but mac kept breno last year when the back ups looked solid in camp, so who knows what they will do
They can still cut him and bring him back at a lower salary... AND do so after the draft and FA period before camp starts. This move is good because it kicks the can down the road past the FA / draft period so it gives Mac a chance to see what he can do then decide on Clady. If he didn't make this move they'd be out $$ next month before FA / draft. Strictly from this view its a very good move and his entire $10mm irrelevant should they find a suitable replacement between now and TC.
I'm so conditioned to the Jets making stupid moves I've been looking at this trying to work out how it screws us for next year. Yes, there is the possibility (probability even) that he will look good in camp and then get injured again, but the $10 mill isn't guaranteed. It gives us time to see what else we can do at the position and his contract would almost certainly be reworked if we did decide to keep him. It seems like a smart move to buy some time, at zero cost.
I dont think they would make the same mistake 2 years in a row. I think they'll have another LT on the roster in camp besides Clady and Ilajana. This Clady thing is just procedural. If you are the general manager and you have to option to have to cut someone now or decide to do it later without harm you obviously decide to do it later. This isn't an endorsement of Clady by any means, if they were pretty sure they wanted him back at that figure they wouldn't have negotiated this they would've just stuck with his original contract.. if I were him i'd be worried. He will have to be truly excellent in camp to stick around with $10 mil. Another option, even if he is the best LT in camp, would be to cut him in final cutdown, then resign him at a cheaper mark. If you can go week 1 without him then you dont even have to guarantee the whole season at minimum dollar, let alone $10 mill. this way they can keep him around, he's injured so they can let the Jets doctors work on him and look at him/ evaluate all offseason. It's win/win, there's not much to be upset about this thing
Even with this move, the Jets need to approach this offseason like Clady will not be on the roster for next season. The Jets shouldn't count on him to be healthy for 16 games next season.
There is no guarantee he will re-sign with the jets though. That's the part that makes this situation unnerving. I'm looking at the big picture as well. Plays well, gets his money gets hurt. Jets play hard ball with him till the end he gets cut, signs with someone else. Jets don't sign or draft a LT, he doesn't play well, now what? From my perspective the jets think they have a winning hand and it sure looks that way, but if they can't get a LT they are screwed. I'm not upset about it, looks good for the jets but as one poster stated earlier, there is a way that the Jets can get hurt by this, we are just not seeing it right now.
I was hoping he'd take a pay cut personally. rework him down to 6-7 mil for the year and save 3-4ml and just guarantee it. but at least this way it gives us all of camp and preseason to see if he's healthy or to see if we can have a viable cheaper replacement. He actually played really well when he was healthy and all things considered 11 mil isn't a lot to pay a LT if they can play as a top 6-8 player at the position
Hey, Clady, two options: 1) restructure and possibly keep the bonus if you're healthy in August. 2) peace out.
