It's a two-way street. I'll bet that Poole wants to have this be a "prove it" year and look for a much bigger payday next year. If so, I think that's a good strategy.
just gut instinct but this may be a harbinger to come the fact that Jenkins and anderson (and Beechum to some degree) aren't signed yet suggests someone didn't give them an offer they couldn't refuse WOndering of this indicates those guys are negotiating a return too?
It’s funny how I went from not caring much about resigning our own guys to wanting them to return. Although this hasn’t been a crazy free agency, at this point with how Douglas has held back on spending, I think it makes sense to bring back most of these guys at the right number.
I'm actually surprised he signed for such little money. The way he played last year, he clearly deserves a bigger pay day. With that said, I'm curious If he is a player that has bought into what the FO is trying to do, It honestly looks like an extremely team friendly deal. I wonder how much of that played into his overall choice?
I feel like we're really going to be frustrated a year from now that we didn't give this guy a 3- or 4-year deal.
agree 100%. I remember last year there was a lot of skepticism about Poole (penalty waiting to happen, etc.). Ends up he played very well in WIlliam's defense. Not a star but he WILL outpeform this contract number if he continues to play as he has.
Definitely on Anderson and Jenkins, and would be very happy with Beacham returning as well. Then whether we take an OT at #11 or get one in the 2nd round, we'll have great competition and depth.
We could be, but I would think that Douglas tried to sign him to a longer deal, but Poole didn't want to. He's betting on himself that he can replicate that level of play again in 2020, and then cash in big time in 2021. I can't blame him. Hopefully, he feels wanted and respected, likes it here, likes playing for Williams, and the Jets will be able to lock him up for a longer deal next year!
I think Poole wanted a one year deal. Salaries are going to go up quite a bit next year he wants to be a free agent again when that happens.
Re-signing Poole and signing McGovern best two moves so far imo. Wish Poole deal was longer tho. He may cash in next year. If he proves it again I hope it’s us he cashes in with.
The only AFC East cornerback that graded higher than Brian Poole in 2019 was Stephon Gilmore, the AFC Defensive Player of the Year
If he does get fired, Williams should not be his replacement. He's one of those coordinators who's not cut out to be a HC IMO.
Sometimes you have to let your guys explore the market in order to convince themselves that there's no place like home.
