you don't have to account for that loss. one team can be better than another team and lose to a third team. ultimately, you have to narrow down the criteria to what is most relevant. losses to a third team is simply less relevant than overall record and head to head games. overall record and head to head success are the two most telling factors, and if two teams have identical records, that becomes null and the next determining factor is head to head. with that the Ravens have the heads up because they beat the Jets. sure, at the end of the season if the Jets have a better record that would obviously make the head to head match up less meaningful. but if the Ravens end up with a better record, would you then attempt to claim the Jets are still the better team by pointing out losses to any other team on their schedule? that would be ridiculous to do, and it is ridiculous to do now.
Hello. Ravens fan here... don't hate though; I have a lot of respect for the Jets and what they are trying to accomplish even though I may not agree with how they are trying to do it. I just wanted to point out one thing though a win is a win... Our loss to the Bengals was because Joe Flacco had the worst game of his career, no other reason. Our win against the Steelers had nothing to do with who is playing at the quarterback position because we shredded their defense and all of the quarterbacks on the Depth Chart for the Steelers are professional athletes and expected to play their best when given the opportunity. We've played the top 3 defenses (besides ourselves, in my mind) in the Jets, Bengals and Steelers and we've earned our wins despite who was playing or who wasn't. It is too early in the season to determine who is the better team, but both teams have the potential to go to the playoffs and the Superbowl and we'll see what happens. The Ravens won the game, the Jets lost. The Jets have looked better lately, the Ravens have looked worse and better at times. It's all situational. There is no excuse for a loss, because it goes in the books as a loss not "a loss without Darelle Revis" or "a loss without Ed Reed" or "a loss without Ben Roethlisberger". The Jets are a great team. The Ravens are a great team. I'll be looking forward to the rest of the season and watching both the Ravens and the Jets.
Jets, Ravens, and Steelers...top three teams in the NFL IMO. I honestly don't give a shit who says who is in the top spot. The fact is we're only four games into the season and there are plenty of arguments of why each of these three teams can be #1...and the scary thing is, none of these teams are at full strength right now! Holy shit is it gonna be a battle if we face each other again.
Agreed, those are my top 3. At this point in the season i'd rather put teams into tiers then rank them, and I put those 3 in Tier 1. 3 most physical teams are # 1...funny how that works out.
It is odd, the NFC is surprisingly mediocre this year. Only one team scored more than 100 points up to Now. To be fair actually I forgot about the extremely early bye week. Am I crazy or is this the first year they've had week 4 bye week? I think the entire league should break at week 9, it takes away advantages of extra rest and it's smack in the middle of the season.
Ball Hawk Ed Reed... Much respect for coming on a Jet's forum and talking football, but to say the Steelers wouldn't have won no matter who plays quarterback is a little biased. You say the Ravens "Shredded" the Steelers defense. They put up 17 points, 7 of which came on a last minute drive. You mean to tell me if Big Ben played that the Steelers wouldn't have put up even 7 more points? I mean come on now, every sports analyst out there said Ben is worth 7 points by himself, Charlie Batch and Ben are on completely different levels. So beating the Steelers on a last minute drive, while their 4th string quarterback played isn't a huge win for me. No disrespect to the Ravens, you beat us, past is the past, but to say you don't think it would have been a different outcome had Ben R. played is a little crazy to me.
Nobody beat the Patriots the last time they went to the Super Bowl except the Giants. You may be thinking of the following year when they beat NE with the Wildcat, same year they won the AFCE. If you want to make that argument, you should make it for the 1989 1-15 Cowboys defeating the then-undefeated Washington Redskins. But I think that's a bad comparison as well. This was 2 premier non-divisional conference rivals on a national stage, and the Jets blinked. That's as relevant now as when it happened in week 1. Regardless, we'll see how injuries play out and both teams finish, because I think most of us would like a second shot at Baltimore.
It would be the most fair way to give out bye week. However, that would mean no NFL games for tv in the bye week. Too much $$ at stake to have a week w/ no football games on the screen.
The Ravens beat the Jets straight up. The Ravens have beaten 2 of the top 3 teams in the NFL that aren't themselves.... How on god's green earth can you argue against anyone putting them in the top spot? What is the big deal to admit that. The Jets made some critical errors in the game that have actually helped their development as a team going forward. So the reality is, that the loss wasn't the end of the world, in the process they learned a great deal about team and how to coach it. In fact you can argue that the loss to the Ravens was the best thing that could of happened to the Jets. (not counting Kris Jenkins injury) Again the Jets have improved immeasurably as a team since week 1. The loss was, 2 similarly built teams going at it with about as slim a margin of error as you are ever going to see. I just fail to see any embarrassment in this or anger at the Ravens gloating. Again, please keep in mind the Ravens have beaten 2 of the top 3 teams in the NFL at this point and they deserve their ranking @ #1..........
Trends and momentum are a big deal in football. I'd much rather get a stinker out of the way early than be arguing about this in December. BAL is a great team as well (with some apparently decent fans) so splitting hairs in early October over who is better could not be more meaningless. Go Jets!!
