I don't have a moral issue with Marshall per se, he's a first class prick but then so are lots of other sportspeople. The difference for me though is that he's one more incident away from a suspension and/or jail time, and that isn't worth trading away #89, Edwards, Leon or pretty much anything else for. Cotch and Edwards are good enough when combined with our ground attack that I'm happy to settle for less of a marquee player to run the slot, one that's guaranteed not to miss half the season because he's been acting like a wanker again.
you're basing your argument on assumptions, Willie.....you have no idea if Marshall will regress. And i told you....if he does....I'm sure there will be something in the contract to mitigate any risk for the Jets. If there isn't...then Tanny is a moron and this would be a bad move. But we know Tanny isn't stupid. Also..you'd be trading FOR the future....Marshall just turned 26...and is a proven talent. The guy hasn't even peaked yet.
I'm looking at his history and the fact that he hasn't changed. He was benched by his coach as recently as week 17 of the 2009 season for being a dildo. What evidence is there to suggest that he's all of the sudden a changed man? He's immature and stupid, albeit a tremendous talent. No contract given to Marshall could protect us from the lost players/picks involved in any trade. If he miraculously matured and became a changed man, he would be for the future. There's a tremendous amount of evidence to suggest that won't happen.
MB, the problem is that you can't put a clause in the contract that says if he fucks up again as is an odds on likelihood, we get back whatever we traded for him. Stopping Marshall's pay while he's suspended doesn't do squat for our SB chances this season, and you better believe that's what the FO is aiming for. Marshall's a great player but whatever the cost is to get him, unless it's purely wages it's too much. No way am I giving up picks and/or players (unless Tanny pulls off something ludicrous like Ghost plus a seventh in 2016) for that liability. Edit: just seen that WSW has said pretty much exactly the same thing!
Well..I won't disagree with you on Marshall being an immature dildo....because he certainly is. But in his defense....the NFL isn't exactly filled with "model citizens".....in fact, they're the minority, IMO. I want a superbowl win....and if the deal is a feasible one...let's do this. I do agree with you and Abyz in regards to mortgaging our future for him...I don't want that at all. Marshall isn't worth "Bringing on the Ditka" unless the SuperBowl win is guaranteed.
There you go again comparing Marshall with your run of the mill NFL fuckup player. Marshall is far worse than the average NFL fuckup. That's what you don't seem to grasp here. Marshall is more of a Pacman type fuckup than the guys you're thinking of.
Well..in the eyes of the NFL, Willie...he's no better than the other "NFL fuckups" in the league...otherwise, he'd be getting the PacMan treatment right now.
Technically, Rex Ryan hasn't dealt with "many" troubled players. Edwards was hardly a troubled player by Marshall's standards. Chances are, we were probably interested in Edwards well before the clubbing incident. He was unhappy with the situation in Cleveland, his contract and his role. We all saw how he dealt with Rhodes and his ego last year. The minute he had a chance to ship his ass out, he was gone. If Marshall acts up or makes stupid decisions that alters the personnel of this team that we put out on the field, I'm sure Rex is gonna have a short temper for that kinda stuff.
For years now we have avoided these 'badass' types, and look where its got us? I'm not a fan of Marshall as a character, but his ability is blinding. So I think it outweighs the cons. Daniels is also an egotistical prick who wants a team full of yes men (Mangini-MkII), and benching him week (?) was just ridiculous. The Jets are a fun team to be one now and with a great core of high character players, if he can buy into that, we don't have a problem.
Funny how such a tremendous receiver has lost so much trade value. The asking price of the team that he's been producing as a top 5 WR for is now less than a #1 pick. I don't see teams lining up to pull the trigger either. If he truly was your run of the mill NFL player, why wouldn't teams have already pulled the trigger for a 2nd round pick? I guess the NFL doesn't quite view him as you do.
Broncos don't want him so they don't have that much leverage unless several teams are competing to get him, he has a troubled past and a questionable attitude, all that adds up to a player not worth more than a 4th round pick IMO no matter how good he is.
this is essentially the stance i'm taking. Marshall's potential is somewhere in the stratosphere.....but if he fucks up....turf him. The only thing that could kill us in that scenario...is if we trade away the farm to get him.....then it's a HORRIBLE idea. However...if the Jets can have him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick ONLY.....then you make that deal.....i don't give a shit if he punches babies....he also catches footballs like turds catch houseflies.
We were just in the AFC Championship game with a talented young core of players and what seems to be a good young HC. I don't understand your logic at all.
the price was AT LEAST a 1st round pick...up until what....yesterday? if his price drops any futher, Willie.....teams will line up. We're still weeks away from the draft....lots can happen.
I agree 100% that the time is now to make moves to push us over that edge. We have tons of talents and we need to make moves to win now but I dont think the kind of moves we need is for another WR. If we can trade for an elite safety or pass rusher i would be 100% on board. We need to win now but right now we are a run heavy defensive team and those are our priorities while our QB develops into hopefully a Brady, Manning, Warner, Favre, Brees kind of QB who needs his elite targets and can carry the team.
Someone will take the risk as the price drops, I hope it's not us. The Broncos are trying to get as much as they can, and they're finding out it's less than they originally had hoped for.
of course they're finding that out.....the entire league knows they want to get rid of him....they're going to get lowballed. The same thing happened with us in regards to Hollywood Rhodes.
Are you suggesting that's the only reason the price has dropped? There are plenty of teams who could really use a dominant WR. If he were just the run of the mill NFL douche those teams would have jumped already regardless of whether Denver announced they wanted to get rid of him. They announced they wanted to get rid of Cutler last year too and got 2 first round picks for him.
the Cutler situation was totally different......the Broncos had a bidding war involving other teams (Cleveland & Washington were 2 of the teams) regarding Cutler. You think i'm blind to Marshall's off-the-field issues? Of course that factors in to the equation. If Cutler had a character problems...i'm sure the price would've come down....but you and I both know what the market is like for franchise QB's.....trades like the Cutler trade are unheard of, man... Teams are using the 2 factors to drive the price down......Marshall's character flaws and the fact the Broncos want to get rid of him is public knowledge.
Your previous statement said nothing about his flaws when explaining why the price was dropping. You were denying my claim that he's worse than the normal NFL douche by saying his stock was dropping because the Broncos made it public they want to trade him. I guess you've changed your tone now? Cutler has character flaws too, yet as you pointed out, he had a bidding war for his services. Granted a young franchise QB is worth more than a young dominant WR but you're talking about a guy with tremendous talent in his prime here. The main reason his stock is dropping is because of the tremendous risk involved with trading for him and giving him a ton of money that could end up being a 1 year rental before he ends up in prison.
