I am not opposed at all for compensating our own players at their market value and would do so in a heartbeat for Mo if we didn't have the other contingencies. Such as lack of cap room, a quality if not pro-bowl player or players at the same position, and not to mention all the other free agents we have to sign.

For franchise tag we get two firsts, for transition tag we get nothing if we fail to match (it is a roll of the dice).

I don't have a ton of names or statistics (others can probably fill that in) But I have a general feeling that the Patriots do not hesitate to cut a great player if that player wants to be paid an amount that would negatively impact 20 other positions on the team. Revis was the latest example.

I know the Pats have Tom Brady which may be the difference that makes releasing great players possible. But Belicheck never seems to handcuff the team to keep ANYONE around, other than Tommy. If Belicheck was still our HC, Wilkerson would probably have been gone 2 days ago.

If we lose Mo then we gotta keep Snacks. Snacks, Richardson and Williams are still a very good defensive line.

Both Mo with the broken leg and Sheldon with the suspension hurt the trade value a lot. But hey when do the Jets ever luck out?

highly doubt sheldon gets suspended next year... and if he does it would probably be in the 2-4 game range.. i don't think his value is as tarnished as some may think. Mac and Bowles said they are very proud of how he's changed things around and been a professional all year long.. lets hope he can tame himself over the summer.

Trade Richardson NOW before he smokes his next blunt or drives too fast or whatever he will do next because let's face it ------> it is gonna happen just a matter of time ! Nah tag Mo and get a damn deal done.

and we don't know Sheldon is gonna get in trouble. He doesn't have a chronic history of fucking up and doesn't have a terrible rap sheet from his past either.. he got a little beside himself and dealt with his consequenes but he's no Josh Gordon or Aldon Smith... not yet at least lol. If he gets in trouble again then we may have a problem.

I thought they did away with the transition tag. I thought there were just two levels of franchise tag, exclusive and non-exclusive.

    There are three options:

Franchise tag exclusive $??? - No one else can make offers at all
Franchise tag $15.4 mil - Teams can sign player to offer sheet and pay 2 first rounders if deal is not matched
Transition tag $12.5 mil - Teams can sig player to offer sheet and give up nothing deal is not matched

No team is giving up two number 1 for Muhammad Wilkerson , and paying his big contract.( that is pure fantasy) .
The Jets will be lucky if a team offers a late first rounder for him.( very strong defense line draft works against the Jets).

The Jets have two options - tag and trade Willerson quick( get the best offer you can get), or sign him to a long term contract.( large signing bonus + small salary counting against this year cap- as you're trying to push this contract past Revis contract years.

These are the only two options because they can't let that 15.6 million franchise tag be sitting on their books for that long.( have to be able to sign their own free agents they want to keep, and other teams free agent they would like to bring in.

101GangGreen101 stated in an earlier post in this or another thread that the Jets should try to do something with Wilkerson before Fletcher Cox of the Eagles signs a new deal. Well according to an article in the Star Ledger than I found from a link on the ESPN NFL Rumors site, Cox may be close to signing with the Eagles and the figures don't look good for the Jets.

Not with the transition tag, only with the non-exclusive tag. The transition tag just allows the Jets to match the offer sheet or let Mo go without compensation until the following draft when he likely would turn into a 3rd round pick.

The people who want to trade Wilk are insane......good teams don't trade there top players when there in there prime....A lot of you calling for Wilk to be traded were the same people calling for Revis to be traded. We traded Revis then had one of the worst secondarys in the league. The D line would still be good without Wilk but would it be great? That all depends on what Leonhard Williams turns into and if Sheldon can keep it together....not to mention Harrison....The Giants are gonna be all over Harrison if we don't resign him and letting him walk to the other side won't be good for Mac if things go bad for us(As a Jets fan things going bad is always a possibility until proven otherwise)

Actually not clear what Belichik would have done. He lets 29 and 30 year olds go instead of giving them a big pay day. Mo was 25 last year. No idea how he would have dealt with the situation. Probably pressured Mo to take a below market contract relentlessly with the help of various other players on below market deals in the name of winning a Super Bowl.

Yes ideally you usually don't want to trade one of your best player just entering their prime years. The Jets put themselves in this situation by not locking him up when they had the cap space to do so last year. ( don't worry about it, let's kick the problem down the road). well the problem here now.( the guy would have to have a monster season - only going to cost more to sign him.

Instead they put that money in a CB on the wrong side of thirty( Revis) getting Qb kind of money. Now with limited cap space, do you sign him at the expense of other positions.

Everyone would probably like Muhammad Wilkerson back, but at what cost to the rest of the Jets roster.( that is the real question you must answer) .
