We need reliable quality veteran WRs to help Wilson develop. Rookies could be struggling to learn the offense or adopt to the NFL. It has nothing to do with the playoffs. No, we don't need to fill other positions first. That is the same mistake that Mac made. When you take a QB, you should build around him. That means offensive skill position players and OL, not defensive players. A rookie QB needs quality veteran WRs, whereas Watson wouldn't "need" them, but would want them. Depending on how FA and the draft go, the Jets could wind up a playoff team this season. It's not likely, but possible, but they won't go deep even with Watson.

This defense I think will be a lot different for the secondary.
As for the Front 7, it's really just a variant of the 3-4 though.
I added a pic to help with the visual.

Q is perfect for the 3 tech, with JFM adding nice depth.
Shepard and Fatukasi as the run plugging 2 gap DLs.
    Phillips will play subpackages.
    Dline looks good to me.

LB I'd agree needs some work.
Mosley is perfect Mike provided he hasn't lost 2 steps in his absence.
This is the Fred Warner and Bobby Wagner role. Great ILB's, with similar playing styles.
    After that it gets dicey.
Hewitt would make a nice Will if we keep him, and Langi I think would fit well at Sam. Of course we could and should look to upgrade.
At Leo I'm not sure. Basham, Huff, Luvu, and Zuniga will all get a look, but it's uninspiring.

For secondary I really like Maye, as I feel he can play either S position at a high level.
CB we definitely need help. We were terrible last year at the position.
I'd re-sign Poole, add Sherman in FA, AND draft a CB.

All in all though, I think I'd focus more on Offense, as it needs more pieces to even be competent.

Saleh may not like it, but the defense can wait until next year. Douglas should surround Wilson with offensive talent from both FA and the Draft this season so that LaFleur can build his offense around their talents. The defense is already much better than the offense. IMO you are totally mistaken about not having players that fit Saleh's defense. We have Q. Williams, John Franklin-Myers, Folorunso Fatukasi, Kyle Phillips, Javelin Guidry, Ashtyn Davis, Josh Huff, and maybe Zuniga and a few others. All may not be ideal, but they can be place holders for a year. The D isn't going to get fixed in one year, and neither is the offense, but right now, the offense basically has Becton, Connor McGovern, Mims, Crowder, Tyler Johnson, and maybe Chris Herndon. It takes a year or two for an offense to gel, and this is the time to design/build the offense around the players we have, so we need to get as many of the pieces in here that we have. The D can come together much faster. If we add a DE like Shaq Barrett, Carl Lawson, Trey Hendrickson or Romeo Okwara, this D could get a lot better in a hurry. Adding Richard Sherman and a LB who can cover like Tyus Bowser, Jayon Brown, or Nicholas Morrow, will make it even better, and the D would be even that much farther ahead of the offense. Our D has already been at an NFL level. Our offense has barely been at a minimal small college level. WR is just as important as DE, CB or any other non-QB position.

I would be, and I think that would be a huge mistake. We need another proven veteran WR to help Fields or Wilson develop. You can't count on rookies. They can probably count on Mims, but that's not a given. If Douglas doesn't sign at least one quality FA WR, it will be a big mistake, regardless of who our starting QB will be this season.

That must be because you don't understand the relationship between a QB and WR. QBs have to have receivers that they can trust will get open and then catch the ball. Rookies who may struggle to learn the offense, routes, or who need work on refining their route running, or who struggle to get off the LOS cannot be counted on. Come on, guy. It's not rocket science.

I get the fascination and I'd be in on it if there was someone out there that I think was worth the money. I think Godwin would've been given his age and the fact that he's a true chains mover that's versatile to play inside and out. But he got tagged.

At this point though I'd imagine we sign someone coming from the offense like Kendrick Bourne and draft another second or third rounder. I don't really love Curtis Samuel if his price tag will be what I imagine it'll be since he's essentially ran up to being the 2ndish available guy behind Golladay. If we're looking for a more gadget sweep player they might look at Isaiah McKenzie.

Josh Reynolds is another you guy who was stuck behind two stud receivers in Los Angeles.

I'm not disputing your first point. I never have. My issue is with spending HUGE money on a free agent WR this year. We do need a quality veteran, but we can get one of those without breaking the bank on one of the top guys. It's going to cost a ton to rebuild the O-Line, unless you want to fill it with draft picks. So you get to choose one, either spend big on the O-Line, or spend it on WR. I say this because we will spend big money on a defensive player(s). A good defense takes longer to build & is much more difficult to find the right pieces to fit the system. If the right defensive players are there in free agency, we will sign them because that is a Saleh team.

And if we go into free agency with uncertainty at QB, a big time free agent WR is going to choose a team with an established QB. The only way we would get that player to change his mind is by seriously overpaying for him. That is poor value and roster mismanagement. Welcome to the Cowboys.

We are building around the QB by making sure we have a really good O-Line.

There is no way we're ignoring defense in free agency with this new head coach. You can talk all you want about how this is an offensive league, but it was the defense that won this past Super Bowl despite what Tom Brady did. He just made KC's defense look stupid while TB's defense knocked the crap out of Mahomes and especially Kelce. Levante David was the real MVP of that game. Nice signing by TB today. A younger David is the prototype LB I would love to have on the Jets, so would Saleh.

I agree. There are so many veteran WRs out there that it's not really a position we need to focus on right now. Everyone wants to skip over the fact that it will cost a lot to build a line on both sides of the ball, plus add other positions of need. If we were an established team that was short of an elite WR to get them to the next level, then yes, by all means, spend big money on that player. The people who want to spend big on a WR are the ones who want to build Rome in a day. Meanwhile, our QB is getting dumped on his ass because our line has a bunch of rookies, a 2nd year player, and a veteran. Then our defense is mediocre putting more pressure on the offense to throw the ball, plus we'll always have crappy field position. Yikes, not a recipe for success for a rookie QB.

Saleh has talked about his defensive philosophy in depth and the main thing he points out that it is always a work in progress. He is constantly experimenting with different strategies, but everything is based on quick hard tackling front 7. Everything stems from that. If you don't have that, it makes no difference who is in the secondary.

I can't see your image. lol

It also makes a lot of sense to draft young receivers so they have a rapport immediately with the QB without being mercenary types. Look at how having Odell off the field helped Baker.

Not all rookie receivers struggle. Justin Jefferson this past year. Jarvis Landry, Michael Thomas, JuJu, Anquan Boldin, Jordy Nelson, Courtland Sutton, Deebo Samuel, AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Tyler Boyd etc. using all second round examples.

Michael Gallup, Terry McLaurin, Cooper Kupp, Golladay, Godwin etc. in the third.

The easy answer is to not draft those guys.

I agree, and I have said in numerous posts that I think JD should sign a relible veteran WR and then draft a WR. Give me a little credit, I also know that not all rookie WRs struggle, but there is no guarantee. Some are safer than others, and generally those that are safer are taken early they're the Justin Jeffersons, the CeeDee Lambs, the Jerry Jeudys, etc. Then there are the Jalen Reagors, and Michael Pittman, Jrs., and KJ Hamlers, Van Jeffersons, and N'Keal Harrys.

It's not either/or. The Jets have enough cap space to sign Thuney, Robinson (if he hadn't been tagged), Carl Lawson or Trey Hendrickson or Romeo Okwara, and several other cheaper players.

I totally disagree that a good defense takes longer to build. To begin with the Jets already have more pieces on defense, and their defense is already pretty good. The chemistry and timing with the QB and OL and receivers takes much longer than getting a D to gel together. Their play is not based so much on timing or chemistry, but rather knowing their assignments.

Who said anything about going into FA with uncertainty? Where did that come from? Strawmen arguments are not necessary.

Just building the OL is not building around the QB. That's ridiculous. Skill position players are just as important as the OL.

I didn't say that we'd be ignoring the D in FA, either. I even said that most of the money in FA should go to the D after the Jets sign Thuney, a WR, and a veteran QB like Beathard.

Teams don't get to the SB or have a chance to win one if they don't have a great offense. Yes, it takes D in the playoffs. KC's D isn't that great. KC was missing two starting OL in the SB and Kelce and Hill dropped key passes that cost the Chiefs big time. Hill dropped two TD passes. Kelce dropped another one that would have put them into scoring postion. TB's D did squat to prevent those and if the KC receivers had executed like they should have, TB would have lost.

Oh my, you really are a piece of work. Where did I say that you said anything about uncertainty? I'm talking in general, as in during the free agency period, WRs will not know who our QB is since free agency comes before the draft. Right??? Stop being so defensive. Or offensive or whatever you prefer.

As for the Super Bowl, rewatch it because you must have been on the toilet for most of the game. Who was knocking Kelce off his routes the entire game? That would be Levante David, the true MVP of the Super Bowl. Enough said on this if you can't even acknowledge the brilliance of TB's defense in the Super Bowl. It was a crime they weren't acknowledged on the podium, especially Bowles for his tremendous gameplan that had David knocking the hell out of Kelce. But Tom Brady, so that's why.

Now I can see why you have issues with people. Personally, I don't care, but to others, you come across as a loon. I find it funny. Ok, I guess it's on. I will step up my game and challenge you on everything.

I'm interested to hear what your entire offseason gameplan is since you don't have a problem attacking others when they state their opinion on how they would like to build the team. I want to know what players stay and go, salaries, free agency, and draft. Let's go. Chop Chop.

But you and NCJetsFan have no problem putting a rookie O-Lineman in front of a rookie QB. So do we not draft O-Line? That's the easy answer, right?

I am not a fan of mercenary types unless we already have a team that can make a run in the playoffs. This includes QB, which is why I prefer to take Wilson over Watson. There is something special about building a team from within. That takes skill and a good GM. Bringing in Watson and some mercenary WR is the easy way.

I'm not being defensive, I was just puzzled why in the heck you mentioned it out of the blue when it has nothing to do with what we were discussing.

It doesn't matter that David was knocking Kelce off his routes for most of the game. If Kelce had made that one catch and Hill hadn't dropped two TDs, the outcome of the game would have been different.

Again, you don't know how to communicate. I never said that TB wasn't brilliant, I just said that in spite of all that, KC would have still won the game if it weren't for the dropped passes. LOL

How did I attack you? The truth is, I didn't. I was disagreeing with you and asking why you mentioned things.

You're the one who kept saying that WR isn't important, and that's simply laughable.

I have no desires to get into a hassle with you, but you seem intent on starting one with me. You've taken 2-3 shots at me over your last several posts, but I guess I deserved them for my post last week. Let's call it even and drop the conversation.

We see things in polar opposites, and I don't think there's any point of consensus or agreement we can reach. I totally disagree with everything you've said today, and you totally disagree with everything I've said today. Let's just leave it at that.

Find any comment I made regarding "putting a rookie O-Lineman in front of a rookie quarterback" and any problems I might or might not have with it and get back to me. I'll let NC speak for himself.
