There is never a franchise quarterback in the draft - never! There are no rookie franchise quarterbacks ever. Not Marino, not Mahomes, not Purdy. You may be talking about a guy with the potential to be a franchise quarterback but they don't get there overnight. How many "sure thing" guys in the draft never even got to the level of starting QB? If you listened to half the guys right here at TGG Zach Wilson was finally that sure thing franchise quarterback - how did that work out? How about the Jets are able to find a solid starter and work from there?
Because fans are stupid, quite frankly. The media needs QB’s in the draft, the more QB’s the move people view and pay attention. Zach Wilson was the worst 1st round QB I’ve seen in years, before the draft. He had more red flags than an unmarked white van handing out candy at a kids playground. He had nothing but a great arm. Nothing. No football acumen, no real work on tape, and his athleticism was negated by his smaller stature. He was nearly demoted before his senior season, he was not named captain because they didn’t think he’d start going into the senior year. If it weren’t for Covid cutting practice and meeting time he probably would’ve been demoted. JD has proven himself to be a media driven GM, and Woody is a media driven owner. That’s how you end up with a QB like Zach.
excellent point. it is funny though when you think of the most hyped QBs: Jarmarcus Russell, A.Luck, T.Lawrence. Not dissing those guys, but no one was hyping Brady, Mahomes, J.Allen, L. Jackson. It's much more complicated finding the right person, in the right situation/system. My own 2 cents on the Jets is that we were not effective enough running the ball, and not effective enough stopping the run. And until we get those two things right, everything else is just twaddle.
There were tons of people hyping Allen and Jackson. Mahomes too. They were hyping Josh Rosen too, and Darnold. Everyone missed Brady. My point is our scouting team needs to start building a draft model based on the most successful QB’s in the league. We need to go above and beyond our standard scouting procedure and be able to get past the media hype and hope and prayer mentality, and start to build a model of what works.
I don't think they will or that they should - having got rid of one distraction I can't see them wanting to add the whole Prime Time noise to what is going to be a long term rebuild effort
I've always wondered if that's the main problem with this franchise...that the scouts are among the worst in the league. All the QBs chosen in the last 15 or so years have either been mediocre or worse.
The Seventh pick in this draft could potentially be the first pick on either the OL or DL. The Jets MUST pick on of those positions. I could even stomach a TE. But if they go QB or WR, I am going to go absolutely insane.
That Penn State TE might not be a horrible idea to supplement Garret Wilson and help replace some of the lost firepower on offense.
I really don't like the QBs in this draft, including Sanders. Maybe if Ward falls, then we could but otherwise my concern is that we pick one in 1st or 2nd round, and then because we already have one, won't get one in the draft next year when there are some decent choices. Or else known as Hackenberg effect when we didn't get Mahomes since we picked Hack a year before. So, I do not want to reach for a QB, but pick the best player available. So, no QB in the 1st, and we already have a Milroe/Dart level player in Jordan Travis, no need to draft another one in the second either.
YES, I did include Kenny O'. I'm sorry, but did he win a crapload of playoff games? A Super Bowl? Neither of those statements is true to, yet again, the Jets have NEVER drafted and brought along a TOP SHELF QB!!!!!! I really wish people would stop reaching here. The facts are sooooooooooo obvious.
Please, see my diatribe about Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning. If any of those kids is one of those two guys then, by all means, please draft away. If not, not just no but HELL NO! I repeat over and over. The NY Jets have NEVER drafted and brought along a PROJECT!!!!!!!
Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning come to mind. I sure as hell never jumped on no Zach Wilson band wagon either but your point is well taken. In fact, the only QB, in the last 10 years, I wanted for sure was Baker Mayfield. Other than that, nope.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Do you remember the name Akili Smith?
they are not even similar at all. That’s a ridiculous comparison Smith only played in 21 college games in 2 years, Shadeur has started 50 college games as a 4 year starter Smith struggled to complete passes. Sanders is the all time leader in the history of college football in completion percentage Smith was drafted for his size and athleticism, Shadeur is small for QB. but perhaps the worst part - Smith was a bust because of his work ethic and love of nightlife. Sanders is a football lifer and total gym rat
After watching a few of their highlight vids on the net, I like what I see in Dart and McCord. Maybe take one of them at 7?
I'm not saying I want the Jets to try to draft Sanders but that last part you listed there is why I would never bet against him. I can most definitely see a world where Shadeur Sanders succeeds in the NFL.
