Not for nothing but I believe I started the Ashton Jeanty push on a here a month or two ago. He's one of those rare prospects that you just have to take a look at. I kinda feel like the Raiders are falling in love with him so he'll be gone by 7. But if he's still there, it makes it real tough for me. Here we are again one year later almost to the day. Talk about history repeating itself. Another Bowers-Olu type scenario. Do we still take what we believe to be a long term starter (hopefully of pro bowl quality) at O Line to sure up the line for years to come over a generational offensive skill talent who you could build an entire offense around a la Saquon? I like Olu and hopefully he blossoms into a Pro Bowl level player. That said, you take Bowers every day if we had that draft do over. This all comes down to organizational philosophy and how confident this front office is in their ability to build a balanced roster. O Line is the obvious and expected pick but maybe this new regime is savvier than we think.
It's a new regime and I can't wait to see how they approach this draft as it is obvious they are planning on adding 3-4 immediate starters from it based on their approach in FA. That being said I do believe the last regime made the right call drafting Olu. We all remember how putrid the OL was in 2023. Yes Bowers was a generational talent but the simple argument would be how do you draft a TE when your QB won't have the time to get him the ball? Personally, I would prefer a team to build the trenches first. Now on the other hand you have some people clamoring that Warren will be just as good as Bowers. That may or may not turn out to be true. There is also the argument that the Jets - by drafting another OT in the first round - would have too many high picks invested in the OL. That could handicap them down the road when it's time to negotiate new contracts. Spread the high picks among different positions they say. You mention Ashton Jeanty. Would the Jets draft him and then trade Hall? Would they get a second round pick in return? Personally I don't see them going very high on a RB. That position group is one of the strongest....
IMO, if the board falls with Jeanty and Sanders still there, moving down a bit and grabbing a second round this year would be most appealing. With the run by committee approach AG wants so implement the group we have is quite damned good enough. We can then package the second and third and move up late first round and steal a top TE or RT and fulfill both key positions while still having a second rounder for BPA. Just dreaming I guess
In theory, it made sense. That said, Olu HAS to be a long time starter and make a few pro bowls for me to consider this a great selection for the Jets. If he does those things that I listed then I am completely fine with his selection last year. Even if Bowers is a first ballot HOFer I'm fine with it because IN THEORY it made sense. Now let's not go the traditional theoretical route and let's look at the out of the box route. The best front offices sometimes take swings at generational talents because they have a plan and blueprint in place. If this new Jets regime had that in place and a whole idea to build an offense around another potential generational talent in Jeanty, then I would be all in for the "reach" at 7. But again in theory it's a deep group and you get a RB later in the draft. I get all of that. I'm just saying every now and then you need to go outside of that traditional model and swing for the fences and go big. Also Jeanty is going to have the ball in his hands on so many offensive plays he's going to make a major impact. He probably won't be a Jet based on our needs but I think he's going to make a serious impact in the league and maybe even in year 1.
I would move down too, but I can see why if we can get a decent value for Hall and draft Jeanty, it is not out of the question. Hall had a terrible year last year, there is no other way to say it. And this was second year removed from his injury, so there is really no excuses. While we were all thinking OL was the main reason why running game sucked, it had a lot more to do with Breece, because according to this the run blocking was average. This is probably the reason why Glenn is saying they are going to use all 3 backs and does not give Breece any special mention. If we are able to get a second rounder for him, still get a starter with that pick and also pick up Jeanty, I can see why the Jets might consider it.
Drafting a running back 1st round and trading Breece Hall would be a classic same old Jets move. I've seen people on twitter trying to rally for that, it is so stupid. by far its the worst suggestion ive seen and I have to think Glenn/Mougey are smarter than that
I doubt that happens and not my favorite outcome. Most likely we pick Membou or Warren or maybe trade back, but I do not think this is as stupid as you make it sound. I mean Detroit drafted Gibbs with a high pick and it worked, I don't quite understand why if Glenn does something similar it is SOJ or stupid. Breece was bad last year, was never really great, and is in the last year of his deal.
I'm fine trading Breece. Contract year, coming off a down year and we have two talented RBs behind him that fit the profile of what I assume our new OC will want to do with the run game based off what Detroit did. Then tack on the fact we have a QB that is a better runner than thrower. It makes plenty of sense trading Breece... it makes absolutely no sense to then spend the 7 pick on a RB.
it is not a smart move look at any draft expert page you want. all of them have running back at the top or near the top in their rankings on positional depth in this draft. They are calling it the best group in years. That means you can likely get a good running back in rounds 3, 4, etc... Why would you ever make a 1st round selection on one in this draft.? And I like Jeanty, but, not that much. TEs and pass rushers are also strong in this draft. I'd look mid rounds for that too WR, tackle, safety, QB, those aren't as strong depth wise in this draft. If you reach for a position early in the draft, you reach for those, especially when you already have a good RB in Breece Hall AND a good backup RB in Braelon Allen!
I thought strange at first but then I thought about it. Jeanty looks to be a generational RB. If you can get him and pick up a starter with the second you receive, you have greatly improved the team. Basically you go from having Breece (who you might not have past next year), to having Jeanty (who will be on a rookie deal) + a starting OT(or TE, or DT, or WR).
They also had the best offensive line in football and a built playoff contender coming off a 12-5 year. I don’t believe in the “don’t use high picks on running backs” as much as some, but this is not a good situation for the Jets to take a back in. Jeantty’s also awesome and so is Omarion Hampton but Jeantty’s projection feels an awful lot like Maurice Jones-Drew more than like Adrian Peterson. We also have two capable running backs behind Breece. You could trade him and add a mid-round back and still have a good rushing offense with Fields.
I wouldn't hate that Texas WR Golden by any means. Even at 7! The mock draft nerds will kill the Jets after the draft for that pick for the "value" but ya know what those virgins are usually wrong and "value" is a fake thing anyway. Golden is very fast, a big play downfield receiver which is what Garrett Wilson needs next to him. Like Olave was at Ohio State
I agree Olu needs to continue his trajectory..... I'm thinking if the Jets ever do trade Hall that it would be at the trade deadline if the team is struggling or if the Allen/Davis duo really begins to take off....maybe another team loses a RB to injury and panics. Contract year too... As for the #7 pick I think I'm leaning trade down 4-5 spots and then BPA among OT or a TE/WR. I'd like to see the Jets come out of this draft with 4 starters a RT, TE, WR to pair with Wilson, and sidekick for Q...
I agree with most of what's been said on this page. The only thing I will say is if we get the RT/O Lineman at 7 like Campbell or Membou, then we must come out of this draft with at least one explosive skill position talent. We've all been saying this for so many years that this league is an offensive league now more than ever and we really do need at least one dynamic offensive playmaker out of this draft. I have no historical data to base this off but I think that this FO and CS will be better at identifying real top end skill talent outside of Round 1 than the last several regimes combined. And just fyi, I consider Breece Hall a first round pick by extension for anyone who wants to use him to counter what I'm saying. We really need an explosive weapon on this team. Please draft one from a number of power conference schools. No more picks from East Tenn state and Kentucky bumfuck U when the studs from Michigan and Georgia are staring us in the face. End rant.
