Not for nothing, but Westhoff's unit allowed the longest return TD in NFL history. Killing a guy for having 2 TD's returns against him in a season seems a little silly.
Thank you. if you are going to eventually add up the plusses and minuses in this thread, it will have no credibility if certain transactions arent included- especially an important one such as the ST coach. And as of right now with the current makeup of the OL, you cant be sure that adding Callahan will be a positive because Clement and clarke are weak players at their positions. You can judge a move as a clear positive or a mild positive, but leaving it out because you arent sure makes this exercise a waste of bandwidth.
I just don't see most transactions as meaning anything at this point. Artrell Hawkins? Who knows? I don't see being able to call him positive or negative at this point at all. Same with O'Dea. I'm gonna keep the original tracking post only to things that I know have a strong probability of affecting the Jets positively or negatively. That way if the Jets sign Faneca or another prime free agent I can add him in on the positive side and if they pass on all of the tier 1 free agents that would help, or get outbid for all of them I can put it on the negative side. O'Dea? He has a lifespan in NY right now of from one to three years based on his past track record. Arizona got rid of him and Chicago didn't think enough of him to try to retain his services.
Updated first post to indicate the positive move of releasing Justin McCareins, whose failures this year contributed to a couple of losses.
a positive but you hedged it becaue we gave p a third rounder? makes no sense. if youre going to this then you have to say poitive or negative and thats it....if you say positive but could be negative then theres no point in this excersise to begin with.....Kris jENKINS FOR A 3RD AND 5TH- POSITIVE. END OF STORY
LOL! That had me cracking up. McCareins was horrible. I hate him almost as much as Doug Brien and that's saying alot. Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets saved $2.6 million on their salary cap when they released WR Justin McCareins.
He needs to update to include the Vilma trade, but maybe he is waiting to hear the exact terms on the conditional pick.
Had to hedge it. We gave up two of our draft picks again. That's the second year in a row. The way to build a team is to use your draft picks and sign free agents. Trading draft picks for players helps you right now and hurts you down the road. BTW, I reflected the trade helping the Jets for 2008 by rating the move overall a positive.
I may not include the Vilma deal one way or the other at this point. Vilma wasn't doing much for us back there and is coming off an injury. The conditional pick in 2009 isn't going to do anything for us this year. Sounds like a wash to me.
With the compensation for Vilma that was reported earlier today being inaccurate, I think the Vilma deal could now be considered a positive..
I think I'm still going to treat it like a neutral event. If the Jets clearly got more than Vilma was worth it would be positive. If they clearly got ripped off it would be negative. Right now I think nobody knows what the answer to either of those questions is and we may never know. Note I'm not calling it a negative because we got much less than Vilma would have brought in trade in 2006 or 2007. This is 2008, and for 2008 it seems like a lateral move at the moment.
????????? Sorry, I'd like to sign on to all this positive energy regarding the Jets next season, based on all this moves and all, but really, they are all question marks. Anyone who watches the modern NFL has to admit that no one knows what will happen with an NFL team from year to year. Remember when Parcells took the Jets from a joke to a playoff team to respectability within a year? And what about when Mangini did the opposite a year ago? Injuries, luck, the breaks of the game... This has as much to do with winning as anything. Just ask the New England Patriots! Trading Robertson and Vilma (two of the Jets best players) and gaining come of the current crop of free agents (from what I have heard are the weakest group in many yearsd) may or may not work out.
I'm pretty sure everyone understands all that. What these moves do for the fan is give them hope, we are making moves that are seriously upgrading some big time needs for this team. We are starting to bring in some serious talent to this team, along with good coaching that is what it will take to turn this team around. Obviously it might not work out and we will tank next year and have to start over again but being excited about Jets football in early March is certainly a positive.
I read in this morning's Ledger that we actually got a 4th for Vilma this year - 2008; if he plays well this year and meets the playing time and incentive parts of the deal then in 2009 we have to give back a 4th round pick to the Saints, but they in turn would have to give us their 3rd or 2nd rounder. Again, pretty factual as printed in the Star Ledger.
Yup we get a 4th this year and most likely get to trade one of our 4ths next year to move up into either the 3rd or 2nd round. Turns out to be a pretty good deal.
