Because he is 32 and is due to make about 2.5 million this year. That is a big payday for a team 26 over the cap for a player on the downside of his career. I liked Sowell too, but this was a no brainer. It is time to trim the fat and get younger, and Sowell ain't getting younger.
The Jets can not draft a defensive player in the first round again. The offense needs immediate help not the defense, I don't care how good Hawk will be.
It only saves 391K on the cap. A replacement can't be found for that much. He can be cut next yr if need be. The savings are double.
If someone jumps us for Cutler, I'm not going to be all that upset. Cutler is not a top five prospect, not in this or many drafts. His measurables are good, but there are question marks. If we trade down and he goes before we pick, I won't shed too many tears. -X-
I do agree that it would be tough to explain, but Mangini is a D guy and his first pick in a draft is going to be someone he is comfortable/confident in. At 4 he would get crucified, 8 and beyond, he could justify.
And then we waste ONE full year in the rebuilding process. Also how can you gaurantee that we will be in position to draft a QB next year? You don't pass up the opportunity to get a franchise Qb when you get the chance.
so just cause we need one we should run out and draft one of these guys. why, the entire league knows we're gonna suck this year, play it out and draft Brady Quinn next year... Ellis
I frankly don't put much stock in these kinds of reports, especially with Hutchinson who is burning bridges with the Jets like an arsonist. The only one he stuck his neck out on is Kendall.... the rest are expected cuts. As far as his ability to know what the Jets will do on draft day is laughable. He's throwing darts, and had to write a column because he might have been too drunk to remember the conference call.
And if Quinn blows out his shoulder this year? When you have the opportunity to get the franchise QB that you covet, you do everything you can to get it done. The real question is are EM/MT convinced any of these guys are studs????
Yeah cause we need one and there will be one available is a pretty good reason to draft one. Just assuming we will be in position to draft Quinn next year is idiotic and would just never happen in real life. Anyway who is to say that Quinn with his ONe good year is better than who you can get this year..
How is it wasted? We've gotten a new O-Line and given them a chance to gel rather than play on egg shells trying to protect our newest investment at QB. Rather than a QB, we draft a RB this year, and get the running game down, next year allowing us to learn the system and then draft the QB so we don't get the kid killed his first season. You also have a QB coming out of a system that is a Pro System, that will be available to us in Brady Quinn. Ellis
you don't think we'll be in great position to get him? If you think we're going to win more than 4 games this year, your more delusional than I am. I'm willing to bet my left nut we end up 3-13 next year drafting inside the top 3, leaving us right where we need to be to get Quinn. Ellis
Because all rookies will benefit from carrying the clipboard for if not all, most of their rookie year. Why put a rookie out there before he can use more than 25% of the playbook? They need some time to learn the offense, read pro defenses and get aclimated to the speed of the NFL. I say draft the RB next year.... it's much easier to get a rookie RB ready to play than it is a QB.
and I've been saying this all along... of the Big 3 QB's in this draft, none of them will be very Good Pro QB's. The only one who has a chance is Lienhart, and thats if he goes to Tennessee and not NO. Ellis
There is no gauranteeing that Quinn will be avilable to us and there is no gaurantee that he is better than who is gauranteed to be available this year. How is it wasted?? Qb takes the longest to develop, being that we wil stink next year no matter what why not have the QB getting his reps in practice and learning the system for a run the following year. Every year we wait to get our QB is another year we are set back..
Chances are you are right but in this day of the NFL anything can happen. Do you know how many Dolphins fans I know who thought they would be in position to draft Leinart this year. Now they are ready to contend but they don't have a QB.
I think there are plenty of QBs to get in the 2nd or 3rd round that have the same questions and attributes as Cutler. I am ok with him, I just dont want us to take a guy to high where it is a mistake, meaning we can better the team by drafting value for another need. Judging by the O-line we may have this year Jones and Moore the only set starters as of now (hopefully Mawae for another year(Tutor Mangold in my ideal situation)) anyway, whoever the QB is, I hope he can run, every team is going to bring the house against us this year. We need a QB, no doubt about it, I just dont know that we need one at 4 basically.
This is where we disagree. I think all 3 have the potential to be GREAT qbs in this league for a long long time. Apparently most Gms and scouts agree with me cause all three will be off the board in the top 5.
