well, the majority of the population is in NYC. Its not a slight to you guys, there are more of us and for most fans its a tradition to go see the TC every couple of weeks as a family. I've been to Cortland, there are things to do if the college is in session. Since they aren't, there ain't much to do.
I'm not saying cortland is NYC by any stretch of the imagination, but my point is, if you really want to be able to do nothing, bring camp to my backyard. The nearest movie theater is 20 mins away, bowling 20 mins non HS sporting event is 30+ i mean there isnt anything anywhere near my house
"Schumer said the $200,000 requested by the Jets this year is for the operational costs of the camp. State officials were not available to comment on the Jets' request for additional aid. New York's two other professional football teams train Upstate, but neither one currently receives financial aid from state or local governments." If the state of New York has an extra $200,000 in tax revenue kicking around and they can't find anything better than this to spend it on, they should deny Woody Johnson, refund the money to the taxpayers and not spend the money at all. I'm actually surprised Chuck Schumer wants his name on this shit. I thought he was smarter than that. People might think twice about voting for him next time if this is an example of how he pisses away their tax dollars.
Okay, we get your point... there's nothing to do but watch apples grow. Perhaps a comprimise could be reached whereby the Jets alternate years. That at least makes a little sense for everyone. But this article sounds like this is being set up as a permanent thing. If so, it's a permanent screw job for 95% of the Jets fan base.
I'm going to start by making it clear that the following statements only pertain to the idea of tax-payer money funding an NFL training camp: I'll be seriously pissed off if the Jets get this money. Fuck Woody Johnson, fuck Mike Tannenbaum, fuck Rex Ryan, and fuck anyone else who thinks the Jets deserve money from the NY taxpayers to run a fucking training camp. If it's not cost-effective enough to spend your own money on this thing then don't do it. /end rant.
No.... no... terrible idea. The players might want to go visit the Alamo in their off hours. Too much of a distraction. Send them to Upstate Jerkwater, USA instead, and this way they either have to study the playbook or go watch the traffic light blink in front of nyjetsrule's house.
The Jets are pumping millions of dollars into the local NY economy by doing this. They could just as easily keep it at there training facility in Jersey.
Hey... what if they built a practice facility on the moon? I don't think there are any distractions there at all. Except that maybe Clowney would develop a sinus condition after trying to snort too much moon dust.
There's nothing to pump millions of dollars into, unless you consider Clyde's Barber Shop that's down the road apiece, or maybe little Johnny sitting by the side of the highway selling lemonade.
Does everyone forget why Rex wanted camp there to begin with? He wanted the team to bond together. He wanted them to be forced to hang out together outside of practice rather than going to chill with there friends/family/gf/whatever. This is about team building from Rex's perspective and I'm not going to argue with him. This team stuck together through some pretty rough patches this season and put together a pretty good run despite a couple of major injuries. If Rex wants the team to bond this way, who is anyone to argue with him given what he's done so far?
Mentioning Clowney brings up a very good point. If the reason they're up there is to eliminate distractions, then they'd better take away all cell phones, blackberries and laptops. Guys like Clowney and Rhodes will be tweeting their asses off again instead of studying playbooks, and they'll do that if they're in Florham Park, San Antonio, or Jerkwater, USA. Now all of a sudden, the moon isn't a bad idea. No reception up there.
Ok, how come the Southern Tier, NYC, LI, Utica, Albany...etc. have to pay for it? Where's their financial benefit in the Jets going to Cortland? The Giants ship all the way up to Albany every year, are there any figures on how much it costs New York State for that one? Is one year of playing football together and the addition of a couple of FAs to fill the back of the roster and (as of now) 4-5 rookies going to completely ruin everything the veterans have built together? He doesn't have to upstate New York to get the Jets away from anything resembling entertainment. The last time that I visited my cousins Hampton, NJ, I didn't notice too much going on.
So we should believe Chuck Schumer, that last year's training camp "pumped about $4.26 million into the local economy?" Interesting "about" estimate and incredibly hard to believe. I wonder where he got his figures from?
I'm not quite sure how everything works, but 8% sales tax on 4 million dollars is $320,000. I don't know? This is how Rex has always done it and it seems to work for him. Maybe they can build on top of what they have now. Maybe they can build a stronger team bond than they already have. I think it's more about getting away from friends and family and everything they're familiar with and forcing them to hang out with each other outside of practice.
back when pataki was governor, state taxpayers across the entire state kicked in $124 million to keep the orchard park chokers in buffalo. and, that includes $3 million per year in operating revenue. you object to $200,000 for suny cortland and the jets?
First year the Jets went up to Cortland, they went to the AFC Championship game. I see no reason to do anything differently. It's about winning games, not about taking kids to see them run in shorts and shoulder pads.
