Hester is not a fair comparison to Leon. How many touches does Hester get? He is a one dimensional deep threat WR with bad hands. Leon is a potential game breaker every time he touches the ball and the offensive game plan includes him as a VERY big part... an unreplacable part, at least with Woodhead gone. Hester would be behind Clowney as a WR on this roster. It isn't just about this year. Understand that. Jones is gone next year. Having Woodhead in our hip pocket would have been the smart move. Instead we have 4 QB's, about the definition of tits on a bull. 11 DB's.... well, that's just plain stupid.
If Leon Washington were the one leaving, it would be a comparable situation. The Giants knew they were unlikely to keep Derrick Ward after last season. He was on his way out, just as Thomas Jones is for us. Do you really see Woodhead as a suitable replacement for Jones? Leon, Shonn Greene, and another decent-sized RB. That's what we're likely looking at next season.
AH-HA! Somebody gets it! You want a run oriented offense.... you need the RB's! I'm tellin ya..... one of our RB's WILL get hurt this year. We've dodged that bullet for a long time.
I can't believe you guys are bitching at all the DB's. So, you'd rather have a LB on Wes Welker in the slot? or Maybe we can go all LB's when Brady lines up w/a 5 Wide set! oh, and BTW, Rex Ryan plays a 'Bear'/4-6 Defense also! But let's not get into X's & O's because we should only have 10 DB's on the roster not 11.... C'mon guys seriously?
So where is this back for next year? Spend another draft pick, try to get lucky with an UDFA? Maybe. but when you have talent at a position which will be a need next year, you keep it in favor of surplus mediocre DB's IMO. I think he's a player that could be used this year, similarly to Ware last year as well, which is again more value than i see in Marquice or Coleman.
C'mon man, it almost seems as if you're wishing for that to happen just so you can scream "I told you !!" I know you wouldn't (I think). Really? Let's say we do have an injury to a RB, you honestly believe Danny Woodhead can help carry the load for this "run oriented offense"?? I liked the kid too but this a 3rd string RB isn't make or break on a SB.
If Jones leaves , then we bring in another RB via FA or the draft . If Leon was leaving then maybe Woodhead could fit the change of pace/speed back role, but as long as Leon is here - Woodhead is redundant at best. Also don't forget Rex is a D coach who likes to run lots of formations , keeping extra DB's gives him flexibility for different defensive scenarios. I know this is a foreign concept for some especially after enduring Mangini/Sutton defenses for the past three years.
I'd be curious to know whether there are statistics showing that a player is more likely to be hurt returning kicks than he is in the regular offense. Otherwise, I could make the argument that we should limit Leon's touches on offense to "save" him altogether. It's absurd. This is a guy we love because of his ability to get into open space. Most of his carries end up looking like kick returns with open field tackling anyway. He's a huge asset on KORs for a team that's going to be playing the field position game. Why are you assuming that Woodhead can handle the return duties? Because you really really want him to be able to? He had ONE return this entire preseason, and it came against guys who were unlikely to even make the Eagles. You want the coaching staff to save an active roster spot for a guy who is completely unproven when we have one of the top kick returners in the NFL on the roster? Coleman is getting an extended tryout. There will not be 11 DBs after Week 4 at the latest. It's been one of our shakiest positions throughout the preseason. I'm fairly certain the coaching staff is using these first 4 weeks to determine who best fills the position. It's not necessarily what I would have done (I'd have kept more depth at LB and on the DLine during the suspensions), but they clearly aren't sure who best fits the spot yet. As far as the injury threat to our RBs, if someone gets hurt and goes on IR, you sign someone to take his place. I really don't understand why that's such a cataclysmic problem. Last season, our 3rd leading rusher was Brett Favre with 21 carries. Fourth was Brad Smith with 12. We didn't HAVE a viable 3rd RB. We went with 2. I don't think the fill-in backup to the 3rd RB is going to shoulder enough weight to worry about it as much as you are. If it's a minor injury, you go with 2 for a week. The Ravens had to do that multiple times last season, and they were the biggest three headed monster out there. Joel Dreessen isn't on the Jets. Hasn't been for 3 years. It's a decent point that's seriously hurt by the fact that you don't know the names of players on our roster, like James Dearth. The "sexy jiggly girly move" would be to keep the fan favorite Rudy story on the team. He didn't do that. I'm not sure what you find sexy about Mulligan and Davis, but please share.
Huh? When did I say that? I've been one of the most vocal supporters of Leon through all of this. IMO, he's our starter next season with Greene backing him up in something of a timeshare. We pick up a 3rd back through FA.
Any defensive scheme using more DB's than a Dime package is a recipe for losing. It's actually Mangini/Sutton that employed the rush 3, drop 8 into coverage packages. You'll never see that from Ryan. I'm not saying Woodhead is indispensable by any means......i'm just saying he offers more value for this year and next than several players on the active roster.....namely the last 2 DBs.
Sorry if I'd rather not go into next season with two undersized backs and a guy who is a bit injury prone. Talk about rolling the dice on the injury bug... Again, 1 of those DBs will be cut after Week 1 or 4. Maybe 2 of them. It seems perfectly logical to me to spend our extra 2 roster spots right now on defense, given that's where our suspensions lie. You disagree. Such is life. I'm puzzled as to why Coleman is still on the roster too. If I were to place a bet on who gets cut after Week 1, he'd be my first choice. Apparently, however, the position hasn't been decided yet. Perhaps that's because EVERYONE short of Revis has underperformed at CB. Also, as far as the back for next year. No draft pick. Either sign a FA off another squad or a UDFA. I'm not sure why we have to get so lucky to be successful. We're talking about a guy who needs to be our #3 and average fewer than 5 carries per game. You don't think we can find that?
No, I ABSOLUTELY do NOT wish our guys to get hurt! Geeze, T, we can disagree, but don't go there. Injuries are a part of NFL football. We have been BEYOND lucky with the O line and our RB's. Yes, I worry about injuries, and look at the probablities of them. Rememeber when Herm ignored O line dpeth? And Kendall butchered several games at center when Mawae went down? That pretty much ended the season, and made us a laughing stock. I am a big believer in depth, especially at key positions, like center, LT, O line in general, RB, QB, and on the D, a backup for Jenkins. Our run D falls apart when he can't play. Every team needs a OG that is as good as the two starters are. TE's.... meh, FB's... meh... you can always find a guy who can block. We have really dodged the injury bullet at theses positions. I hope that continues. I'd rather be prepared should the "stork of injuries" visit us the way it visited the Mets this year. We aren't going to the Super Bowl this year. The playoffs would be a surprise. Tanny is trying to win this year at the cost of somewhat mortaging next year IMO. Woodhead is just the example of a general trend Tannenbaum is creating. hort term crap moves that are not good for the Jets beyond this year.
Not when the blitz can come from anywhere on the field. Mangini/Sutton would line their DB's back 25 yards from the LOS, hell if they blitzed they'd get there by next play. Also I'm not saying that we'll have 8-9 DB's on the field , I'm saying having more gives more options with personnel packages. Again what were you expecting from Woodhead this year ?? If he made the roster he was going to inactive , unless multiple injuries popped up. Even then I would think we would bring in a "bigger" back for Rex's power offense. Woodhead wss like the square peg in the round hole - there was no way he was going to fit in what this team is trying to do.
Did you really just suggest that cutting Danny Woodhead is "mortgaging next year"? Man, I get why people like the kid. I like the kid. His value, however, is being SERIOUSLY overstated. You mention depth at other positions. Great. The difference is, when you talk about a backup O-lineman, you're talking about someone who, in the event of injury, will be counted on to take EVERY snap. When you talk about a backup for Jenkins, you're talking about someone who will be counted on to take EVERY snap. When you talk about the 4th string RB, you're talking about a guy who, in the event of injury, will STILL only need to take a handful of snaps. Two running backs handle the load for a lot of teams in this league, and they could here. Any backup will do in that situation.
i get what your saying about personnel packages. you just don't need a surplus at the position to get that done. i expected minimal actually. A role player type similar to Ware of Giants last year, possibly inactive some weeks, with an even larger role next year. I don't believe you need "bigger" backs to run even a power offense. Talent and speed can change games. Leon proves that, and mighty midget Sproles may be even the best example.
Brain fart.... you knew damned well I meant Dearth. I'd like to keep this a reasonable discussion.... if you would like that as well, plaese avoid words like absurd. TYIA. No, you didn't say Leon could not be a feature back, but indicated Woodhead could not. Thay are close in physical size. I understand Woodhead is slightly faster. He looked good on the returns he did get. He also looked good in the open field in that last preseason game. I think he would be a fine return man, but... If that is your opinion, fine... I'm not sure I agree. The big knock on Leon was that he was far too small to ever be a feature back. Um.... you missed the point.... these are not sexy moves, they are cellulite jiggle. Nothing sexy about a fat broad with cellulite doing a strip tease. That is what I see Tannenbaum doing now. Trying to look good, but lookin ugly. As I said in an above post.... we were beyond lucky with injuries last year. I doubt that happens again.
Yes, and those guys fill their roles for their respective teams . But you don't see teams saying , hey we got a mighthy midget like Sproles , let's add another one - because two is better than one .
