Chris Baker is a UFA.. Just take a look at what Gates did for Brees' career.. Having Shchottenheimer here, who is a big TE guy and has seen what a player like Gates can bring, Davis is definetly not out of the question and shouldn't be.

Coles is only a number 1 wideout on a BAD team or a team with a bigtime tightend... We DEF need a real number, ala MAURICE STOVAL. I like Coles a lot and think he'd be a great number 2, as J Mac is like a good number 5 at this point...

Coles IMO is easily in the top 10 as a WR.. He does everything good/great.. You can't put blame on him for a poor statistical year when your QB is incapable of throwing and your line cant protect.

J-Mac should have a decent year along with Cotchery who will have a breakout year

I like Laverneous (sp?) a lot but there is no way he's in the top 10 wideouts in the AFC let alone in the NFL...

And he barely qualifies. He's the kid in class you struggle between giving a A- or a B+. IMO, he's a B+. But who says you can't win with a pair of B+'s?

IMO, Coles has shown the signs of being a #1. But hasn't been consistent enough. Very similar to Chambers case. Good speed, great strides and catches, but too inconsistent. Granted Coles does get a little break due to QBing problems. But it stands that neither player has made a solid stand at being a #1. That's the truth.

It was just 3 years ago that Coles made the pro bowl. Two years in a bottom 4 passing offense and now people question if he can play?

Facts are facts,he had two good years and then played on the 4th worst passing offense for two straight years.Get your facts right.

You know how funny it is that some people blame others for there demise.Coles came into the league as a bad boy.Noone really knew him and the Jets took a chance on him and it paid off.BUT.............he left for MONEY and went to Washington he only came back because they wanted Moss.Coles has been battling a toe injury similiar to turf toe which noone makes mention of.This has most definitely changed his speed and style of play.

When you consider what happened to him in his childhood,it's not hard to understand why he has issues.

I'm a little confused, how does a thread called "Jets need a true #1 receiver" have anything to do with jets have too long been married to stars of the past? What you brought up seems to have very little to do with the actual point of this thread.

You are right Cotchery didn't have much of a chance to show what he can do but there were a few reasons in my mind:

    1. PH's pathetic offense in 2004
    2. Nobody to throw the ball to him in 2005
    3. Overall problems with the offense in 2005.

Chrebet was still a good #3 receiver but probably should've stepped down just for health reasons more then anything else. Cotchery has a ton of talent and I was a little surprised he didn't beat out Wayne last year but with the original plan for last season's offense there was going to be little difference between the #3 and #4 receiver and they both would've seen a lot of playing time.

I don't agree with your assessment of JMac. He was our top receiver in 2003 who rarely dropped a pass that year and who made some very big plays. Last year he definitely had a down year but I take his 2002 and 2003 seasons as more of a sign of what he brings to the table then last year when the offense has a whole struggled and there was no real QB to throw to anyone.

Same goes with Cotchery, he was never really brought in to replace JMac, he was brought in to replace Wayne. Herm was high on Cotchery so I don't see how he would be to blame for anything but like you view my is pure speculation too.

My take is last season we had some good passing catching TEs and a pretty good receiving group but with all the injuries and OL problems nobody got to truly show what they could bring to the table. Personally I think the talent is there (sure it can get better, but it's far from bad) and with some actual blocking, a healthy QB and maybe even a running game we might be able to see what they can do.

JMac didn't play for us in 03. His numbers in 04 when he was really our No.1 WR aren't impressive for a No. 3. 56Catches 770Yards 13.8YPC 4TD. That is less than mediocre considering in 04 there were over 30 NFL Recievers with over 950 yards and over 30 with at least 69 receptions. |

You're right, a true number 1 would be 6-4 and able to go over the middle. We should disregard the three consecutive seasons where Coles caught over 80 balls and the one last year where he caught 70 something, mostly from a third stringer with no experience playing with little running game.

Some of the games best receivers are small, but they come in all sizes. Coles is a great receiver because he runs great routes, makes yards after the catch, and gets separation. He does the fringe things like blocking, but those are secondary. Say what you want about the guy, but at the end of the day, the numbers are there. He is a gritty competitor and I'd love to go to war with him.
