You have been saying it and have been correct. Part of the problem has been Bradway and Herm's insistence to play Chrebet who was a great jet in his day, but averaged less than 1 td per year the last 3 years. The jets are getting young and it's about time. We'll miss Mawae, Chrebet, Vinny, and some of the over 30 gang, but not that much. The salary cuts and roster cuts for the overpaid fatcats was overdue and the future finally looks brighter.
I think Coles is a #1, and maybe when J Mac is completly healthy he can be the other receiver the Jets need. And Cotchery may develop into a real good WR, but I think he needs a little more time.
Wasn't that Keyshawn? Whoever they had though he was hardly a game breaking threat and actually it was the Joe J. (their #3 receiver) who came up big in the SB.
Jets need speed at WR. Speed gets open. A guy like..........Santana. All this talk about him not fitting because of Pennington was ludicrous. He struggled here because he was hurt, or Pennington was hurt. When they were both right they were great with each other. Look at the fact that three of his TDs last year were plays where he took a step forward, then two steps backward, caught the ball, then outran the whole defense. Lets face it, I could have made those throws. But we got Coles so I ain't complaining, because Coles is a solid player. We need another fast guy. TO is TO not because he is tall, but because hes a blazing fast guy that happens to be tall.
Nobody will ever make Brooks Bollinger look good. Everyone that likes this kid is an idiot, he is miserable.
Thing you left out is that Chrebet was injured in 2 of those 3 years and didn't even really play 1/2 the season. And if you went back just one more year he had 9 TDs which was actually more then Coles in his breakout season. I find it a little bit of a stretch to say the reason we don't have a #1 receiver is because our FO kept a #3 receiver.
We have 1 battle tested wr and he isn't great and that's Coles. He is solid but he can't do it alone and McCariens has been an embarrassment, he should be playing special team or be cut. Cotch is already in year 3 and hasn't shown enough to beat out McCariens, that doesn't encourage me very much. I'm willing to say it's Herm's fault for now but that is mere speculation. You couple that with some of the worst pass catching TE play in the NFL over the last decade and you have a real problem. Our offense can't play a match up game with any good defense, we simply don't have the talent to create big mismatches and big plays. Until we bring in more speed a solid TE and some speed at RB we are going to have to grind for every yard. That's without getting into the OL issues.
The Jets need a slot reciever to replace Chrebet. Cotchery can catch, the only problem is he doesn't get open.
Well, I guess this year we'll find out if Cotch is even a #3 receiver because he got little to no chance the last 2 years as long as Chrebet was around. Point of the thread was the jets have too long been married to stars of the past (Martin, Chrebet, Vinny, Mawae) and haven't even LOOKED at (or kept) some of their young players. Probably the best illustration of this point is Herm/Bradway bringing a 42 year old QB off the couch for several games last year instead of looking at Bolly, who when finally given the chance played a lot better than Vinny.
It really dosent matter....We need our QB (whoever he is) to have more than 2-3 sec to throw the ball... Iv also never thought a reciever was a huge need to take a team to the next level. Look at the pats and tell me you wuld rater have a GREAT #1 and a huge drop off after that to the #2....NOPE I would rater have 3 very servicable journyman recivers and a good TE than a true #1 and ok #2.
Vernon Davis can be that guy.. Type of player to change the opponents gameplan and coverage which will make Pennington, Coles, Cotchery and McCareins that much better. He can be your #1 target and fill the role at TE.. He can be used in so many ways its rediculous.. Use him as an H-back, set him up on the slot, you can even set him up out wide.. a 6'5 260lber who runs a sub 4.4, whose a decent blocker and can jump over 9 year olds..
with 4 tight ends on the roster i doubt we will get davis will be gone by round 2.we should have drafted heath miller last year
