i really don't think marshall is that available. Unless the Jets are going to bowl them over with a 1st rounder, he's got great talent and has no leverage to continue his holdout, so it should be quick and over soon.
Marshalls situation is alot like Leons - the both are under contract and dont have much leverage unless they want to shoot their way out of town. the difference is that Leon is less likely to be a divisive player-He enjoys the game too much to sit out.
I've NEVER understood NFL teams' reluctance to trade draft picks for players! Considering how many 1st and 2nd round picks end up as busts/ average players, why not trade and get someone who is PROVEN to be a game changer(in this case Marshall). The way i see it, the Jets will keep this 1st rounder and struggle at WR all year..they'll have to try to fix that hole in the offseason, whether it is through the draft or through free agency. Right now the top possible free agents in 2010 are Braylon, TO, and Lee Evans...these are only if they don't resign with their teams. None of those options, IMO, are as good as Brandon Marshall. And if the Jets do look to the draft for a WR, i guarantee they won't find someone that can make an impact like Marshall within the next 5 years at least.... I'm just frustrated that this team could improve immediately and become a super bowl contender this year and for years to come, yet they'd rather sit back and hope all turns out well with their future drafts.
The problem is that you are screwed as an owner either way. You overpay for an unproven rookie or you really overpay for a proven veteran. Sure, you know what you get with the veteran in most cases, but there is always the chance you can get a rookie at a decent price and when he develops, you still get to pay him less than he should make for a few years on that rookie contract (until he bitches and holds out for a re-worked contract). Of course, you are also quite likely to have a rookie who sucks balls like Ryan Leaf. As much as it pains me to say it, the smart move is what Belichick does, get 2nd-4th Rd draft picks, pay less for them and mold them into your system. One of his best talents is getting great talent at reasonable prices. The teams that go out and spend big bucks on the latest big-time talent (Cowboys, Redskins, etc) seem to always flop even with the big names.
Nobody knows what the front office is thinking. It'd be understandible to take from a position of depth to address a position of need.
Why would Denver want TJ, they drafted Moreno in the 1st, and also have Correll Buchhalter, Lamont Jordan and Peyton Hillis. I don't see how Denver would be willing to do this without a 1st round pick and possibly more. With all of Marshall's baggage, losing a 1st rounder, and the high money contract that we would be required, it just doesn't seem like the ideal fit.
Ditto for this. I'm not sure what Denver would be looking for other than picks. Orton's struggles make me think they might be interested in a QB, but I'm sure at the same time that they're willing to go this season with their current options regardless and take one to develop in the 2010 draft.
Maybe the plot is thickening. "SEATTLE — There is something amiss between the Broncos and Brandon Marshall. The Broncos made a curious decision Friday when they decided not to take their top receiver with them for their preseason game here tonight against the Seattle Seahawks. Three other Broncos players — Brian Dawkins, Knowshon Moreno and Brandon Lloyd — also didn't make the trip. However, they were all held back because of injuries. Marshall is healthy. His status with the team seemed to change Tuesday afternoon when his agent, Kennard McGuire, met with Broncos management to reiterate a trade request Marshall said he first delivered to owner Pat Bowlen during a face-to-face meeting in June." "Should the Broncos reach the point of placing Marshall on the trading block, they likely would expect first- and fourth-round draft picks in return. The first-rounder would be based on Marshall's first-round production in the past two seasons, when he recorded a combined 206 catches. The fourth-rounder represents the round Marshall was drafted in 2006." Not too high a price to pay. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_13182800
Honestly, I wouldn't mind sending a 1st and 4th rounder for Marshall. I mean, I know its a high price to pay for someone with the off the field issues he's had, but it's still a 25 year old WR that's already in his prime. If the Jets keep that pick it's going to be a WR in the next draft anyway, might as well just get things going a bit early.
tough spot cause IMO the jets are destined for 6-10 which would be a decent # in the first round next year.....we are not talking a low 1st rounder unless we all get surprised. if i am the GM i go no higher than a 2. we have to keep that 1st rounder next year. it will give us leverage to move down next year. TJ cannot get traded. we have a rookie QB. nuff said. we need all the capable backs we can get. see if they bite for a 2nd and 4th - wonder if they could make that 2nd become a 1 in the unlikely scenario of the jets making the playoffs. which would be a lower pick in R1 obviously. tough cause we need to break the pattern of diminishing picks. gotta starting accumulating at some point. jil
I would have to go with Bowe, he is an underrated receiver to begin with but he has been reliable even with his crappy qb play the last couple of years, I'm surprised the chiefs want to give up on Bowe after two seasons. Even though Marshall is more skilled, I think Bowe would be cheaper and still be quite productive
1st and a 4th for this might actually be a steal. hes an absolute animal. there are not too many recievers that physical in the nfl. the guy runs through people as well as around them. i dont see why we shouldnt make this move.
