This was announced yesterday...... The Durham Jets http://www.durhamccc.co.uk/news/durham-jets/are a cricket team in England and when I saw the logo on the news I just couldn't believe how similar it was to our very own Jets, albeit retro now.. Copyright infringement?
I'm hardly an expert in copyright law, but maybe it makes a difference if something is no longer an official logo. The Jets moved on from that logo quite some time ago, so perhaps their copyright on the image eventually runs out.
Yeah maybe. Personally I think it still matters. So what if we have a throwback game and they use the 80s logo again?
Looking at the two for no more than 10 seconds I notice at least 5 major differences..they are in no way similar.
I ' m not seeing how they are similar. Every letter looks completely different. Even the design above is completely different.
I don`t think anyone can have copyrights on letters of the alphabet. The NY Jets are like the Cleveland Browns. They don`t really deserve to have a "logo". Just a color. LOL 45 years.
LOL they aren't even remotely close! Not a single letter is the same and the line above it is bent a completely different way. They couldn't sue over that even if it was their current logo!
It's actually not close when you think of the name "Jets", there aren't too many other "Jets" to to illustrate (Winnipeg looked close as well). Comparatively, replace this scenario with "Bears" and you will find tons of exact representations.
There isn't a huge similarity, but anyone who's dealt with the NFL knows how quick they are to send in the goon squad. I'm surprised Goodell hasn't asked Obama to authorize a drone strike yet.
Imagine a cricket team with the personality of Rex? The players flying like Jets after recording an out Change the perception of the gentlemen's game
I've had a bit of experience with this (costly experience, in fact). Anybody cam use the word 'Jets', so that is the first point. After that, they have to be able to show their name graphically. They have used a different font and, most importantly, a completely different colour scheme. They have also put a skew on the logo. Finally, they are not competing with the New York Jets, nor are they attempting to pass themselves off as the New York Jets. There is no case to answer here - but that doesn't mean lawyers can't get involved, because they get paid no matter what happens and there is always somebody daft enough to invite them in (treat them like vampires, if you don't invite them in, they can't hurt you).
Interesting random trivia: Durham NH is the home of the University of New Hampshire, which is where the NY Titans held their first tryouts.
