We have $10 million in cap space, and can free up another $2 million this year by cutting Smith (which would seem inevitable if we were to sign both Landry and Nelson).... We can also free up further cap space if needed by restructuring David Harris and/or Antonio Cromartie's contracts.....
If we can get both of these guys in here, this will instantly be the best defense in the NFL even without a top of the line pass rusher. I'm not saying we don't need one, because we obviously do, but it narrows our draft selections down to OLB, RT, WR. Maybe a running back or inside linebacker too.
Cap wont be an issue for signing these two. Nelson we can just spread it out with guarenteed cash, Landry will be offset by cutting Smith. We should be able to get both for under 6 million net cap
I think he'll be ok as long as he works hard on rehabbing that achilles. He is injury prone, but when he is on the field, he is an absolute monster.
Dont get me wrong i want him signed here. But he flat out rejected the opinions of medical professionals. That is quite significant
Reggie Nelson came into the league with oodles of potential as many compared his physical abilities to that of Baltimore's Ed Reed. Nelson has sideline-to-sideline speed, solid hands, and a tendency to deliver hard hits. As a rookie, Nelson picked off five passes and although he bit on play-action, many believed that this was just part of a rookie's learning curve. With big things expected of Nelson in his second season, he regressed and continued to bite on play-action. This continued throughout last season and it became evident that Nelson wasn't going to live up to the expectations of his draft status. (He was a 2007 first-round draft pick, 21st overall, out of Florida). Nelson may have lots of physical ability, but he doesn't have the mental fortitude to be counted upon as a starting safety. Though having a tendency to lead with his helmet while tackling, Nelson avoids contact at other times as he often gets blocked by receivers and uses poor tackling form. He still bites on play-action and he has been labeled "soft" by Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.
Yup, Landry's a monster at the line of scrimmage. He's useless unless we get a safety who can cover (like Nelson) though.
I think you're missing the point. He is a league average safety. We haven't had that since the Jets stupidly got rid of Kerry Rhodes because he wasn't Ed Reed and he didn't lay the wood. Never mind that he was one of the rangiest safeties in the game. Anyway, Nelson's not going to light it up against the run either, but he's an above average athlete who won't be embarrassed in coverage. That represents an upgrade. -X-
Speaking of Ed Reed like safeties, theres a safety named Ed Reed who is gonna be an UFA next year Then again hell be 35, and the Ravens might not like the idea of losing him and Lewis all in one shot. So who knows
I hope the Jets sign some safety wether it be Landry or Nelson just get one, and as per the http://www.nfl.com/freeagency it says that the Jets are the only team with interest but I think we can all agree the Jets aren't because of what happened with the Niners just now expressing interest.
If I'm not mistaken, his post was simply some sort of scouting report from back when Nelson was a Jaguar.....completely ignoring his time with the Bengals. Thus making it pretty much useless.
I think they will use Landry and Nelson against each other just like they did with Stanton and Quinn. I don't think Eric smith gets cut.
That is correct, here it is - a scouting report when he first landed with the bengals: http://cin.scout.com/2/999362.html Looking at just the stats he did much better in coverage in his days with the Bengals. Code: comp % opposing qb rating int 2008: 69.6 104.9 2 2009: 87.0 147.7 0 2010: 33.0 30.4 2 2011: 65.7 73.9 4 That's probably part scheme and part him just coming into his own as an NFL player. He also didn't play as much in 2010, it would be dishonest not to mention that. I'm confident Rex will use him the right way.
