We're just used to it because Tanny had us in cap hell all those years and we were forced to sign several cut players each season and put them in big roles. I expect with Idzik, he will still look for good value options, and will be less likely to pay big money contracts to FAs. I think the big difference will be that we won't try to throw them in starter roles. When you sign a cut player, you kinda know they have limited potential, but have a chance to work their way up the ranks. With Tanny, he always signed em and threw em to the wolves

Impossible to answer. No one knows. I'm sure both teams have a value they think is correct and if an offer comes forward we'll find out.

True. Was hoping someone had some insight as to what the numbers might be.

  4. I don't think the Bengals will match any long term offer. Not b/c they don't like Hawkins but b/c they have AJ Green,Marvin Jones & Muhamed Sanu all still on their rookie deals. Green will carry a large second contract. One would think they have only a certain amount of $ budgeted for WRs. Hawkins was almost gravy given that he was a UFA for them.Very Similar to Chris Ivory.

Him and Kerley would create some mismatch. Bring him in and pick up Evans or Ebron.

It's an interesting thought, but I would pass. I prefer the young upside we already have on the roster in Salas or even Hill over Hawkins, and that's saying something.

Because that's what Jets fans have been conditioned to for much of our history. Our teams always sucked because our GM and Scouting Dept. couldn't identify great talent in the draft and/or our CSs couldn't develop talent, so often the team was marginally improved by adding other team's trash. Thankfully, we finally have what appears to be a competent GM at a very minimum, and perhaps a very good one. It's gonna take some people time to catch and catch up (at least I'm hoping they'll learn). I'm as sick as you of seeing posters asking about this FA or that FA who are old, awful or both.

Hawkins is a good, under the radar player who doesn't need a lot of touches to be effective.

Watch his 2012 highlights: week 1(?) against Baltimore and the play late in the year where he goes into "human joystick" mode for a 50-yard TD.

I love Idzik's approach so far.

I hate all the rumors about the team reaching out to washed-up "vets" I want nothing to do with (Matt Schaub being a prime example), but until the trigger is pulled on a move like that, I'll give Johnny the benefit of the doubt.

Salas has no "upside" and Hill can't stay healthy, catch the ball or hold on to it.

This guy would fit our offense rly well next year

High YAC, can get him the ball on low-risk routes/throws.

I'd love this guy as a depth player. Better than Salas.

He's 28 years old. This is a short-term move if the Jets make it. A guy who might contribute for a couple of years. He's like 90% to be out of the league by 2016.

Goodson and Winslow are in no way comparable to Hawkins. The Jets picked off the heap last year beause they HAD to...They had literally no choice.

Hawkins isn't trash heap material. He's not an all-decade All pro but he's not a bad player or someone elses garbage.

Hawkins is very close to the trash heap. Not his fault because he's a pretty good player for his size but he's aging and he's injury prone and the N-F-L is looming for him.

I'm not sure he's aging...Maybe in a year or 2. But, I wouldn't consider him trash heap because he's been buried on the Bengals depth chart by default. He's flashed when given the opportuity. He's not the answer but he'd make for a nice role player.

28 is aging in the NFL. 30 is old. Trash heap has nothing to do with whether or not the player is a decent player, as Hawkins surely is. It's about whether his value is above the replacement level of a 22 year old player with similar characteristics once you have accounted for all the factors in play, including cost, health and proven ability.

Don't like blue people, eh? Racist! For too long The Man has kept the Blues down and now that one of them has a chance to show his athletic skill for our team you don't want him. For shame. It's high time the ACLU and the NAABP intervene on this issue.

But seriously, it sounds like he would come fairly inexpensively and actually won't cost a pick. I don't think he should be the only WR addition, but given that our WR desperately needs depth I could see this guy as a solid no. 2 or 3. I am still hoping Hill comes around in year 3 as well, but I am not so naive as to think we don't need a backup plan for if can't pull it together in camp. Even if that happened, what does that leave us with? The Quitter will be cut soon enough, so we will have:

    Kerley
    Salas (is he a FA?)
    Nelson (him as well?)
    Hill

Am I forgetting anyone? Of this list only Kerly is a lock. So adding another depth WR is a must. We still desperately need another starter, however.

Ah, he's 28? So he is well past his development years and basically has no upside. I could see getting 1-3 solid years from him but now that I read this I am thinking even more strongly that this is a depth move with an aim toward providing TC competition like Idzik was talking about last year. Bring in lots of lesser known players and let the cream(ish) players rise to the top. It is a good way to build a team from castoffs and spare parts and would make us competitive quickly.
