All we hear about is how great the 69 Jets were and that's pretty obvious. But what the hell happened in 1970 where a Super Bowl team turns in a horrific 4-10 season? I am only asking because I was born in 1970. edit...just looked it up... Namath out for season in 4th game. Looks like Snell only played 3 games. They lost ALOT of nailbiters, so I suppose this team wasn't as bad as their record would suggest.
1968 Jets won the Super Bowl, 1970 Jets were 2 years removed. The 1969 Jets I believe were in the AFL Championship and lost to the Chiefs in a close game.
The Jets lost to the Chiefs in the divisional round game at home on a very windy and cold day. The Chiefs played and defeated the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship.
Injuries played a role for sure. Also, most of the old AFL teams struggled making the transition to the new NFL. The Browns and Colts, two old NFL teams, were two of the best teams in the AFC in 1970. Of course, the Colts went on to win the conference and then the Super Bowl.
Jets were not destined to win in 1970. Jets had a tough schedule that year Had to play Browns, Colts (SB champs) 2x, Dolphins 2x (in their first winning season), Raiders, Vikings, Rams & Giants ( 9-5 that year) As usual, two agonizing losses to Buffalo killed the season Bad loss to Buffalo 34-31 in third game after leading 24-10 in 2nd quarter I think Snelll injured achillies in this game Lost to Miami 20-6 in game 4, in first game where people started to notice the Dolphins Namath injured in 5th game, which they lost to Super Bowl champion Colts 29-22 - Jets 1-4 Al Woodall took over for Namath in game 6 vs. Bills Lost to Bills 10-6 on late touchdown that killed the season Jets eventually went to 1-8, then got themselves together and Beat Rams, Pats & Vikes (who were 9-1 at the time) to go to 4-8 Shooting for 7-7, they lost next game to Raiders 14-13 on last play Raiders were comeback kids that year... that was the only last second victory that Lamonica engineered instead of Blanda. Long TD pass to Warren Wells I believe on last play. Lost last two to Miami & Baltimore to finish 4-10 Defense played well... John Elliott had a great year.
No they did not! At least not Saturday morning in the 70's... <insert Wacky Racer's Mutley's creepy laugh>
Wells caught the pass in the end zone with W.K. Hicks and Earlie Thomas on each side of him if I remember it correctly. I have the 1970 Raiders highlight film but haven't watched it in about 20 years.
We should bomb Cambodia and win the war by Christmas. What the hell is a Watergate? Whatever, i'm going to watch Happy Days. Namath's out, season's over.
My first experience with watching the Jets was in training camp 1971. I wasn't really interested in football at all, being a diehard Mets fan since I was 8. My uncles came over one Sunday and I got roped into watching the Jets with them. It was kind of interesting but it was much harder to watch on a little black and white TV than baseball and so I was kind of confused being new to football and all. Sometime early on Namath threw an interception and he tore up his knee trying to make the tackle. I remember the total silence in the room as my uncles sat there in disbelief. They'd been so excited by the Jets chances just a few minutes before and now they were just devastated. I started watching the Jets and within 30 minutes the franchise tore up his knee and started on the long trip downhill from there with the team going with him. That explains my attitude about the Jets.
