Still, from a cap point of view he left a better situation than he is given credit for. Did he give Sanchez and Holmes (and imo Harris) bad contracts? Yeah! But we're not in cap HELL.
hahaha dude, stop. We're fucking awful!!! We barely put out a professional team this year. You dont htink that was cap-related???????????? You dont think the lack of depth was cap related????????? You dont think Sanchez's retarded contract is cap related?????????? Any asshole can put 50 morons on teh field and havepayroll within the limits of the cap.The smart cap people can put out a championship calibur team and remain within cap limits. Get it?
Lose the best defensive player in football. Have enough other injuries in the secondary that Ellis Lankster is getting time. Field a top 10 defense. Major holes.
C'mon joanny, get off Hobbes' BBQ'd back. We know Tanny worked some "magic" and ended up putting us in a difficult position. First and foremost, the Tebow trade reeks of Woody Johnson so we lost picks AND have cap to deal with. You know we are going to end up cutting him and we will get nothing in return for him. Pace was great when brought in and has deteriorated. As did Scott. Sanchez extension was an attempt to build confidence in his long term value after flirting with Manning and bringing in Teblow. So yes that is a big fuckup - but the Manning/Teblow issue was a mistake and would not have put this in this position. So it was a snowball. While I am as pissed as you about the results of the season, we fielded a less talented team than KC and still won 4 more games than them. 8 other teams were worse than the Jets. Not that it much of a consolation prize...
Have you done the math? We're pretty screwed (unless Revis or Cro is traded, then we're just mediocre-ly screwed).
Twenty fucking million tied up in two corners? Genius! Extending Mark Sanchez contract and guaranteeing it for two more years? Brilliant! Letting Wayne fucking Hunter's salary go hard when we could have dictated terms to him after the season he had in '11? Einstein-esque! Look, you've demonstrated over and over on this site that you're not the brightest light in the string, but this is pretty obvious.
So you say. Rookies take a while to get up to speed as well as the possibility of draft busts. You're ok with starting rookies at RG, OLB and ILB, only one of which will be a 1st rounder? Not to mention the fact that Landry might be gone, creating another hole. Not to mention players that would normally be replaced (Slauson, Howard) if there weren't so many glaring holes elsewhere. Good luck with your playoff goals in 2013. If Scott's replacement is already on the roster then you'd think he would have played more last year. I didn't see Demario making too many plays. I know stats aren't everything but 30 tackles on the year isn't something that should be giving you hope. I mean we are talking about replacing these guys with at least average players right? Obviously anybody can be "replaced"
The cap situation next year is a disaster. Even the leverage game is going against the Jets since the guys with high cap numbers often have a huge amount of dead money and/or guaranteed salary to go alongside that. Most teams in cap hell cut a couple of really good players to get out of it. They don't want to do that, but they're in cap hell and so they lose some real talent to get the cap back in shape. They get the benefit of not paying a large salary in the process and so the loss of talent is balanced both by a less restrictive cap and by less cash paid out on the season. It's not exactly a win-win but it's better than hell. The problem the Jets have is that they have a few obvious cuts of aging and bad players that will provide some relief however they have no way to let go of talent and gain cap and salary relief in the process. D'Brickashaw Ferguson has a $10.72M cap figure next year. That figure is way out of line with his recent contributions. His salary is $8M. Ditto. Normally when a team had a productive but not star caliber LT making the money of a star they'd offer him a choice: take a cut or go explore the open market. The problem is that D'Brick has reworked his contract a couple of times for the Jets already despite signing it only two seasons ago. He gave them cap relief in 2011 and he gave them more relief in 2012. What the Jets gave up for that was future cap issues. One of those issues is that the Jets will take a $17.85M cap hit in dead money if they cut D'Brick this season. The Jets ability to force D'Brick to rework his contract at this point is nil. He's on the roster next year and at the silly numbers above. If the Jets did manage to get him to rework then they'd have the same issues in 2014 that they have this year: his value is much less than the economic impact it has on the team. David Harris has a $13M cap figure in 2013. He's being paid $11M. Both amounts are very high for his level of contribution. The best MLB's in football play for what Harris is making. His dead money if cut? $13.5M. No leverage, no way out. Again, he has already done things for the Jets over the years and the only way to get his numbers down this year is to make 2014 bad. Antonio Cromartie's numbers are $10.75M, 9.5M and 9.5M. Very little leverage there with 2014 again the price you pay. We're not even talking the really tough issues yet, like the impossible contracts of Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes. We're not talking the force of nature that is Darrelle Revis, who will be hard to deal with in contract talks and then gone at the end of the season for little compensation. The Jets aren't in a normal cap hell. They can't let David Harris go and recover $8M of his $13M cap hit in the process. They can't let D'Brick go and get back $8M. they can't let Cromartie go to recover space. These are the kind of moves a cap hell team usually makes. They're not available here. The numbers tell us that the Jets are going to have to find 10 to 12 starters for next year on about $17M in cap space, including the draft picks. They're going to have another $8M or so to flesh out another 10 roster spots. They'll have a bare-bones minimum of about $2 to 3 million on the cap for emergencies. It's going to be really rough unless the Jets get very lucky. And LaRon Landry? Give that one up because the Jets won't be able to afford him unless the market discounts this season and looks at the two injury seasons as his worth. Even then he's going to be too rich for the Jets blood this time around.
But the bottom line remains, we have a team that is bottom10 in the league as far as talent goes yet we are 20 million over the cap as it stands. That cannot possibly equal a cap genius. Hobbes is now telling us the onlyareawe are thin is at WR. Do you believe this? Are deep at LB? Are deep at Oline? Are we deep at QB?(trick question, we dont even have 1 QB)
the Jets also have one of the worst teams in the NFL. Yes, there are worse but they ain`t no circus act.
Easily replaceable aging veterans is what they are. Moore would be a hard one to swallow but you can find guards in the draft, Scott was once a force on this defense, he's fell into mediocrity now.
Like I already posted above, easier said than done right? I don't know why some of you are acting like it is so easy to replace these guys. Vlad Ducasse anyone? Was he not supposed to be an "easy replacement" for somebody on the o-line? Is Demario going to step it up and be an every down starter? These are only guys a year or 2 removed from when they were drafted and still unknowns so why are you acting like 3 starting spots are just going to magically disappear because of the draft. I mean you are acting like the draft is some sort of store where you just go in and buy the positions you need and you are all set.
They're easily replaceable. Maybe not Moore as much, but Vlad has actually had a decent to ok season. Scott wis hot garbage who will prob be brought back for vet min, and Pace is gone because he was actually garbage. I'd say an aging vet or 6th rounder could do as good a job as Calvin Pace had this season. That's how terrible he was at OLB.
Odds say with the #9 pick we can draft an impact player that will fill 1 of those spots. The odds could favor us there but they don't necessarily guarantee it. There is going to be OL and LB help and depth in the draft, both places the Jets need major upgrades. At least one those will be addressed with the #9 pick. If the Jets trade down odds decrease they find an impact starter, but odds have to increase they find a serviceable starter. Remember now, everyone on defense seems to overachieve playing under Rex so that's helpful to the Jets. Now the Jets could easily get nothing out of the draft and miss on picks and be left in a terrible spot. But at #9, like I said, the odds lean towards us that we can replace 1 missing position easily.
