I agree that Goff is not better than Stafford. But the issue for Detroit was much larger than that. They needed capital and picks and were strapped to his big salary and system.. Way too many holes to fill. Moving from Stafford was the right move. They made some mistakes but turned it around quickly. Now they rock and have talent across the board. For us is even more critical to recognize we have to start to build a new system now, strong line play on both sides of the ball and a strong running game. Sticking with AR system is not the answer if you want to build for the future. If you watched the Eagles thats how you win championships, with amazing trenches. Continue to plug the holes with youth, and find a young mobile QB that fits our system over the next two years.
Don't agree with the decision of not bringing back Rodgers, but I will reserve judgement until the season starts. I hope Glenn & Mouge have a plan at QB. Can't roll into 2025 with Tyrod and Travis.
Stafford was making 27 mil at the time, while Goff 34 mil. Both had 2 years left on the deal when the trade was consumated. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...n-guaranteed-money-contract-details-revealed/ https://bleacherreport.com/articles...ontract-to-make-qb-highest-paid-player-in-nfl So contrary to popular belief they took on more money, not freed up money in that trade. And they could have still had Gibbs by trading up from #16, instead of LB Campbell they took there. They would not have Jameson Williams. But they would have had Stafford who could have put them over the top in 2023 or even last year. Their rise also coincided with having Ben Johnson as OC. They would have still had Sewel. So far Detroit had really good two years, NFC finals appearance, but let's see what happens now. I do think having Goff vs Stafford limited them when it comes to going to SB and not having Ben Johnson will limit them further going forward. Now, as far as Philly, I was the one who was preaching Philly way this entire offseason. Look how good their team is everywhere. Great talent from drafts. And Howie Roseman is a lawyer not a scout. He is just a smart logical guy who figured out how this shit works. He does not need to be the best evaluator himself, but he understand the fundamentals and he has people whom he trusts based on results. And when they don't deliver consistently, like Trey Brown for example, he replaces them with these who do. He also always hires offensive head coaches. because it is much easier to get a DC. And I wanted to get the guy as a GM who was his main assistant for dozen years, who would then hire the coach, most likely an offensive one. Unfortunately things didn't work out that way, and we went with the Detroit model. I hope it works, but still ... giving up Rodgers now is not like Stafford in 2021. I expect to compete for play-offs this year even without Rodgers.
This shows that I bought into the hype, because I'm a sucker when it comes to the Jets. Because of this, I will pay much less attention to the off-season for now on. Actually, I paid less attention the last 2 seasons. I stopped watching One Jets Drive a couple of years ago. During this past season, I stopped watching Jet Youtubers. It's a waste of time because I don't learn. I'm not a good judge of players, coaches or GMs until after the fact. Having said that, I like what Aaron Glenn has shown in public so far. Then again, what do I know? Nothing.
I seem to remember the Rams gave a first rounder to compensate on that trade. Might be wrong I don’t agree that the success was coincidental with Ben, but rather with Campbell selecting a hell of a leadership team including Ben and transforming the team from the ground up in short term due to his leadership skills, not his OC acumen. How Ben Johnson does as a HC much like AG remains to be seen.
The Lions got Goff, two firsts and a 3rd. A tremendous trade for them. The stuff you dream about Ben Johnson is not exactly a Dan Campbell guy, he was on Patricia’s staff before Campbell got there. And he wasn’t OC at first, they had Darrell Bevell. Aaron Glenn was/is Campbells guy, no doubt about that and was his DC from day 1
Stafford got LA over the hump and won them the SB. You don't think Detroit turnaround happens without picking Jameson Williams and Jack Campbell in the 1st round? These guys didn't contribute that much in 2023. Yet Stafford over Goff perhaps could have gotten them over the hump and into the SB that year. You never know. Like I said, he did get LA over hump. Not saying it was a terrible trade, I am just not so sure if they would have been better off without it. LA definitely benefitted though by winning the ultimate prize. But the larger point is that this situation is not comparable to letting Rodgers go.
Unfortunately that last point is right since no one will give us even a bag of footballs for Rodgers the rest is wrong though. That trade made the Lions who they are today
Totally agree. That trade ended up working out decently for both teams. Rams got their ring and Lions built a solid foundation.
LA could not win the SB with Goff, and they could with Stafford, so it definitely worked out of them. But can you answer my question from above though, do you really think they could not have built a foundation if they didn't get Jameson Williams and Jack Campbell with these two 1st round picks? In return they would have had Stafford, which is an upgrade over Goff, though Goff did overachieve with Ben Johnson and that OL. Still Stafford would have made them better, and in 2023 they could have gone to the SB. Now, again, I get the debate about it, but on paper I think they could have done better with Stafford as they would have still had an OL and Ben Johnson. I just don't think it's a great idea to trade a HoF level QB in his prime, and LA to me got the better end of that deal. Detroit I feel could have done better if held on to prime Stafford. I mean they made conference finals and lost in the 1st round this year. This is not amazing. They were just completely mismanaged before. I think there was more meat left on the bone. LA got the SB. Now, 42 Rodgers on the other hand is a different story...
I just figured Glenn would not risk starting off with a potential bad season in his first year as head coach, and losing Rodgers has definitely increased those odds, in my opinion.
This is the thing. For all the "Rodgers is a team cancer, Rodgers screwed up the offense, Rodgers got the coach fired, the new guy won't do any of those" - the new guy still has to perform at this level without the other baggage for the Jets to win 10 games. If the new guy is a great teammate and throws say 59% completions with 13/13 TD/INT (Geno in his last full time year), 56% completion with 12/17 TD/INT (Fitz in his last full-time year), or 59% completion with 9/11 TD/INT (Sam in his last full-time year)... All the good vibes ain't gonna matter. The last year in which the Jets had 28 passing TDs was 2015 (!!)
I still have mixed feelings here…I get the reasons to let him go (salary is high, old guy learning a new system just doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, nor does having a new OC just keep the old system going just to start over in a year, and then the leadership/attitude side of things where Glenn has to impose his leadership which may be hard to do with AR around) Still…you need to replace his production…we lost a lot of games because of our kicker and the defense giving up leads in the 4th quarter when AR walked off the field with a lead…and while he may have rated about average or maybe slightly under, he still put up a much better QB season than we’ve seen in a decade or more. We need to replace that production and I don’t see a lot of great options out there for that. So yeah, I get letting him go. Makes sense in a lot of ways. But I don’t know that it gives us a better chance to win next year, and honestly I’m just sick of these fucking burn it down and build it back up things we go through every 3-4 years. I’ve had it already. I’m not getting younger, and I don’t want to sit through another 3 year fucking rebuild. So the only real question is what are some of our options? I keep hearing names like Fields (he sucks but he can run I guess), Cousins (I hate that guy and he’s a numbers guy who doesn’t win when it matters most…and in any case he’s not free yet…I don’t want to trade for that guy), Carr (another guy who people suspect may become available but isn’t yet), Winston (may be fun but he throws a ton of picks and he won’t win here)…any other options I’m missing? In the draft, it’s by all accounts not a good year for QBs, and certainly none who are expected to come in and do well quickly, so doesn’t feel like there are any real answers there…you never know honestly and many times the best QB out of a draft is not the top rated guy, so never say never, but I seriously doubt our ability to (a) identify a good QB prospect and then (b) actually develop him. And finally, we have the guy we have…Taylor…he’s a bland choice…he’ll get hurt like he always does and he won’t win big either…and an untested 5th round pick coming off injury. We have no great options, folks…
Mixed feelings? The last time I had mixed feelings was when I watched my mother in law drive over the cliff in my new Cadillac.
Per the Athletic, here's some information on what turned out to be the farewell meeting between the Jets and Rodgers: The biggest non-Super Bowl development on Sunday was the news that the Aaron Rodgers era is over for the New York Jets. When the Jets had conversations with him about a potential return, I was told that they set some boundaries: He’d have to attend all training camp practices, and he’d no longer be permitted to do his Pat McAfee Show appearances. It wasn’t nearly like his recruitment from two offseasons ago. More broadly, it makes clear new head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey are putting an emphasis on individual accountability. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/61...ight-offseason-questions-to-watch-scoop-city/ Isn't it nice to see a Jets HC who has the word "accountability" in his vocabulary? (Yes, Dianna Russini was one of the authors, so I'm waiting for Borat's head to explode. LOL)
It was about time. It was an absolute circus under previous regime. Great message out to the players. Not one of you is bigger than the team. Apparently AR was not going to change any of it.
This is EXACTLY why you let Arod go. If he wasn't willing to buy into the culture change, then he had to go. You can't change the culture if everyone is worried about what AR thinks because he's unwilling to buy in to what AG demands of the individual. I love the move. Get the stink out.
