I think everyone is rooting for Sanchez, but they see inherent problems with him that aren't related to talent around him or the CS staff around him. I bet every fan would love to see Sanchez prosper, but if we are waiting to get back the talent from 2010 to see him prosper, then he isn't a "franchise" QB let alone one you would real build around. He just a good front running QB then which, trading up for with the #5 picks and the extension we gave him is not what expected/wanted from him. We all want Sanchez to do well and if he does, great for the Jets as it solves a major hole they have right now created partly by Sancehz's own poor play.
In the best case scenario Sanchez comes out in 2013 playing better than he ever has, I've just grown tired of his mediocre play. I've made the case that he just doesn't have a high ceiling, and certainly not high enough to carry this team to a SB like elite QBs can. But if you gave me potential scenarios for 2013, the scenario I'd want over any other is for Sanchez to play lights out so we get our money's worth and don't have to keep searching for a QB. I am not optimistic about this happening though for a number of reasons first of which is that I don't think Sanchez has enough talent to be elite. He has enough talent to be in the league potentially as a serviceable starter, but I don't see him as ever being in the Rodgers, Brady, Manning x2, Brees discussion. Sanchez's ceiling to me seems to be at current Joe Flacco, which isn't as good as this particular post season suggests, Flacco is a good quarterback but not in the top tier as far as I'm concerned. The one thing Sanchez has going for him is that he can perform in the playoffs, and that is huge, but at the same time you have to get to the playoffs in order to perform well in the playoffs, and Sanchez just hasn't shown enough to make us believe he is the kind of QB we can count on to bring this team to the playoffs year in and year out.
I wouldn't mind it - if he stays that way for a long time, even better. That means Jets won't have to blow another high pick on QB next year. Also that means Jets can fix the woeful LB corps and safeties in a hurry. In short, Jets are going to be shooting for the big one once Sanchez plays like top 10 QB. Possible? Yes. Likely? No fucking way in hell. If anything, you must have nerves of iron - which Sanchez obviously does not have. If you ask me, I'd tell you, Sanchez has a body of NFL QB, face of a gigolo and the mental toughness of a high school girl.
It sounds crazy on the surface but peyton has had elite talent around him his entire career and is 9-11 as a starting QB in postseason including 1-1 against sanchez's Jets. Anyone would still take their chances w/ Peyton but history has shown us he's not a big game QB. They've happened more lately since the talent around him has eroded. The Miami game the tam had basically given up but we had a lead in the 3rd and the D allowed an awful offense to hold the ball for almost 13 mins and 20+ plays to take the lead. he's NEVER had TOP LEVEL talent around him, he's had talent but never top level talent. Edwards, Holmes and Cotch are good WE, none top level. Jones, LT and Greene are good backs but none top level at the time he had them. Keller is a good TE, not top level. You can argue the C and LT are the only top level talents he has played w/ on O his entire career. w/ your bolded statement: how did we win 4 playopff games on the road? how did we play for 2 chances to make the SB? he was but our supposed top D allowed a QB who can't throw to go 95 yds in the final minutes to win the game. kyle orton got beat out by Tim tebow. orton is one of those guys that looks good on bad teams putting up some decent #s(like a Matt Moore type) but when leaned on to win he can't. W/ Kyle orton we are just as bad in 2012 and worse in 2011. yeah he only had Lawrence Taylor- the best defensive player of all time. I think Phil Simms is a very underrated QB all time, I think sanchez can be like a Simms type and was on his way until the last year and a half Simms was broken down physically and mentally early in his career, can mark come back mentally? we'll find out. as long as we win I'd hope we are all happy, I believe we can still win w/ Mark but if the team feels differently and we are winning w/ another QB I'll be thrilled. I think 90% of Jet fans are rooting against Sanchez. I think there are some that would rather lose w/o him than win big w/ him. There was another poster who said winning the SB MVP next year(meanign we won the SB) would be a good start to liking Sanchez again. That is what we are dealing w/, that's why our fanbase sucks.
Thomas Jones led the league in rushing, the offensive line was stellar, and the defense was lights out. Each of these aspects of the game were in the top 5, usually top 3 while Sanchez was on a steep learning curve his first two years. Just because he wasn't throwing to Jerry Rice and Tony Gonzalez doesn't mean he didn't have top level talent around him. Tannenbaum screwed it up for him, and that's tough luck, I recognize that. The offensive roster is crap and this year it was worse. The Jets were decimated by injuries in terms of guys to throw but still that doesn't excuse the amount of misfires, miscalculations, inappropriate reads, inability to move within the pocket or to have a mental clock, or never throwing the ball away. 5 Ints when you are a rookie is embarrassing, but you can let it slide with excuses like he only played one season in college, he'll iron things out. Guess what, he's still turning the ball over at a HISTORIC rate. As in, no one has ever historically accounted for more turnovers.
Can I ask why not? Rooting for him to play lights out would solve a whole bunch of problems on this team? There is a difference between it being likely and rooting for it. I don't think it's likely, but I hope it happens. Sanchez suddenly getting it means we don't have a hole at QB, we don't need to surround him with top 5 talent everywhere, and we don't need to find a new QB. Is it likely, not at all, but man am I wishing for it to happen. Saves the Jets from a whole lot of problems.
I wonder if they will talk to him about restructuring that terrible contact... Wonder what the jets could offer as incentive to do it though...
The Ol was great that year and Jone shad a great year(until late in the year when he disappeared) but Jones was not a dynamic runner. In the same amount of time Eli has 1 less TO so how historic can it be? and he has only had 1 game w/ more than 3 INts since his rookie year and that was the Ten game late this season.
Too bad the Jets didn't go harder after Manning this past offseason. He probably didn't want to be a part of the Rex Ryan freak show/playing in the same division as Brady/same city as his brother, but it would've been nice if they put out the full court press to get him. Imagine how much better a situation they'd be in right now if they had a great short-term QB and the flexibility to get his long-term replacement in the draft.
yeah b/c then we would have had a cap busting longer term contract and still missed the playoffs but we would have had another Favre like sideshow!
We already have a cap busting long term contract for a much, much worse QB...a farve like sideshow with Tebow.. and Manning would've gotten this team in the playoffs. Extending Sanchez vs. Signing Manning....hmmmm that's a toughie
after this year won't have a huge cap hit if we let him go, of course in 4 years he has 4 playoff wins while in mannings entire career he has only 9 and had zero after 5 full seasons. Signing Peyton would have set us back years, no QB would have succeeded w/ the healthy talent we had last year. We would have had more success obviously but it would have been marginal at best and he would have taken a pounding trying to wait for our receivers to get open.
^You must be joking. Signing Manning with the defense we had, we would have appeared in the AFC Championship. Manning definitely would not have listened to the idiot that is Sparano, that is for damn sure.
In hindsight it obviously would have made sense to not extend Sanchez and get Manning if that was an option. It would have probably been premature to give up on Sanchez at that point though.
so he couldn't get to the title game w/ a better D and MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better weapons on O but bring him here w/ our D and weapons and we are in the title game? really?
