Unless we're firing Mazzone (Cotchery's OC at NC State who is a great WR coach), he's not going to be the WR coach.

Awesome move. Its more about who teaches the talent then finding all of this great talent. When you have great coaches you can mold and develop the talent.

That would be funny. But seriously i liked david thomas out of texas whom they took last year. I think he's going to be a good player.

Exactly, experience means nothing anymore. Owners and GMs are looking for young bright minds, and Brian Shotty is definitely a young bright mind.

Great point, it dosn't say anything about him being our WRs coach. Lets see where this one goes....

I suspect he may be TE Coach with other responsibilities, after all, our existing TE coach just left for Arizona...

And if BS does not get an HC bid, might he sign on with Dad when someone hires Marty again? After all, Marty does like to keep it in the family. Just a question: how would anybody know that Noel Mazzone is a great receivers coach? Do we see him coach? Of course Cotchery is going to praise him, Old school ties and all that. But how does anyone know he is a good coach? I am not saying he isn't a good coach. Cetain things you really cannot know unless you are there. With coordinators you can see the game plan. But I have no idea whether he is a good coach or not. Did he make Justin McCareins better? Did Brad Smith catch 1 deep ball all year? Cotchery got more snaps, yes, but that was a Mangini decision in spring camp. So Cotchery came ready to play before Mazzone even started. Again, I am not criticizing the guy, just saying that with certain things about a football team, you just have to trust the HCs judgment. If Mangini decides he must go, there must be a good reason. These guys are not in the business of cutting their own throats. Now Mangini might have an entirely different plan for Daboll, and Mazzone might not be affected. But next year at this time, I will still not know what kind of a coach Noel Mazzone is.

This makes the departure of Richie Anderson make much more sense.

I find it difficult to get real excited about the hiring of a coach I know little about. I don't understand why so many people get so excited about it either. The jump from being a WR to coach to being Schotty's hier apparent seems like an Eval Knievel canyon jump. I trust Mangini, so good, he got another guy he likes.... but I'm not going to the wine cellar to pop that $100 bottle of wine just yet.

I think it's almost impossible for any fan or writer to make a sound judgement on how good a lower level (under DC and OC) coach is or isnt. One can get a general impression at best. Is Tony Wise a good offensive line coach? I believe he is, but that's a guess based on what I was of him at training camp. There is far too much that goes on that we as fans just never get to observe to make sound judgements.

If Mangini likes him, great, but I find this hard to get all excited about.

great post DW. The first bolding really was what I was going to say. And I live in FL. When I saw you guys draft Jackson I expected instant success. and aside from the first TD against us he was relatively quiet. Dallas Baker was a much better pro prospect at UF IMO. Jackson did alot of jump ball circus catching. great and all, but cant say much for his route running.

I love this hire, I dunno about him being an OC though. but what hes done with those WR's since hes been there, good solid job. And the fact he was a specific bright spot amongst fans on the staff means even more.

I like this hire. It sounds like a great Schotty insurance policy and if Eric knew him in NE and liked him enought to hire him, that's good enough for me. He's building an organization he can call his own. Man, I love this guy...

I'm thinking QB coach. Free Schotty up to just concentrate on game planning, plus we all know Shotty is destined to be a Head Coach sooner then later..so BD will be ready..OR I could be wrong.

A few quotes about this new hire, interesting that he started out on the D side of the ball. High praise from the likes of Belichick, Saban and Mangini can't be a bad thing...

Earlier this year, coach Bill Belichick praised Daboll’s smooth shift from college to the pros.

“It was as good a transition as I’ve been around,” Belichick said. “Brian was actually more on top of some stuff than we were. He understands the game and works hard. He does a good job with the players he’s coached, getting them prepared and making sure they understand not only what we’re doing, but what our opponents are doing and how to deal with it.”

Daboll landed his first NFL job in 2000 when Bill Belichick hired him as a defensive coaching assistant out of Michigan State based on the recommendation of former Spartans coach Nick Saban, one of Belichick's close friends. Two years later, Daboll was promoted to receivers coach.

In January, Belichick credited Daboll for working with an almost all-new group of receivers in 2006, noting that he was "showing them extra film and taking extra time with each guy" while incorporating their strengths into the team's system. He said Daboll had done "a great job."

The move to one of the Patriots' top rivals will reunite Daboll with former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, now the Jets' head coach. Mangini praised Daboll in September prior to the first meeting between the Jets and Patriots.

"I think that Brian does an outstanding job with receivers," Mangini said at the time.

He's had several failures as well... with Jackson so far, David Terrell, Doug Gabriel. Don't get me wrong, I'm guessing he's a good coach and it's even better that Mangini has the respect of young promising coaches like this to join his staff, but really.... ordaining him as hier apparent to Schotty is a pretty big stretch. I wonder how much input he had on drafting Jackson? Or why he didn't try (maybe he did) to get them to keep Branch happy?

Like I said, I don't think any of us know how good or bad he might be... but if Mangini likes him, that's good enough for me.
