Dear Terry Bradway, When you become the GM of the KCC, don't sign retread linebackers and defensive tackles to overcome losing starting or starting caliber offensive tackles or running backs. It hurts your comp picks. Mickey Shuler 82
While it should not be your only motivation, it does give an advantage for signing players that were cut (instead of UFA) or even trading for backups in the right situation.
Guys it has nothing to do with the talent. It has to do with two things: 1) How many players we signed whose contracts ran out and were not released vs. how many players we lost whose contracts ran out. 2) What is the annual average salary of the players. Lamont Jordan was the only player who could bring back compensation picks that has a salary over $5 million per year. Forget about who put up better numbers or who is more talented.
Dreesen, I'm not saying it has to do with "who put up better numbers or who is more talented," it has to do with the fact that we signed two retreads that did nothing for our team and who ultimately affected the number of comp picks we got. Here's what the NFL wrote in its press release, in which it stated we lost four compensatory free agents (Becht, Ferguson, McKenzie, Jordan) and we signed three (Blaylock, Gardner, Legree): "The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.... Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors." I freely admit I'm not an expert on the cap or arcane NFL rules. But I interpret that to mean that if you lost four and you gained three, then you get one pick. Look at Baltimore: lost six, gained two, they have four comp picks. So, signing Legree and Gardner had to impact the # of picks we got. What am I missing Dreesen? Now, the value (i.e., draft position) of the Jets' pick seems to be a function of playing time, salary and post-season honors. So, as you suggest, Lamont's windfall w/the Raiders and McKenzie's payday with the Giants probably made our pick a # 3, vs. a #4, vs. #5, etc.
YES...we get the highest of the comp picks that were given out. Am glad we get a 3rd for lamont, i was going to be upset if we got shafted and ended up with a 4th rd pick. Could this mean that we wont have to trade down now to add picks? i hope so...
It doesn't matter. We lost 4 guys, signed 3 guys, so we get 1 pick (which was the highest pick possible, which isn't so bad.)
It's about qualifying guys, straight up, as to how many comp picks a team can get. This part of the formula is simple... we signed 3, lost 4 qualifying players. The fact that Barry Gardner was a waste is irrelevant. He was a qualifying body. If we hadn't signed him, then we could be looking at an additional 4th round comp pick. The rules say we only get ONE. 4-3=1 We are the only team with a three.... and there were two guys here a month ago, Adam and Miguel? that have a rep on this.... and once agian accurately predicted that the Jets wouod get ONE pick, a third. People that have no clue, naturally went off and said how we would get more.... but that sort of nonsense happens a lot on message boards. Someone who can't tie their own shoes tells someone else how to do it..... when the first person already knows how to tie mariner's knots! :breakdance: Empty barrels still make the most noise. It really does amaze me how some very knowledgable people can come in here, even with others vouching for just how good their track record is, and get completely blown off by know-nothing know-it-alls. Then, the know it alls are like HUH? when they should have known all along, but were too busy reading only their own stupid posts to ever learn anything.
Its a great pick, I did think that we would get more then 1 but I would rather have the 3rd then a 6th and 2 7ths.
The only other talk was of a possible 7th which doesn't really give me much in the way of jollies. I'll take a 3rd- nothing like an extra pick on the first day thank you very much, and you'll certainly find players of value picking in that slot. A few more comp picks would have been pretty damm good, but I'll take a 3rd and see you in April
The Why of the equation is broken down pretty well in this thread: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=1518
Picks 1-32 go to the teams based on position. Compensatory picks come AFTER all the picks in a given round. Basically, they fit right in between 3 and 4.
Well said. People need to realize, there shouldn't even be a concept of these free picks. Anything should be gravy, and we should not beg. In all honestly, noone should get anything. However, the NFL is allowed 255 draft picks and if they did 7 rounds straight, it would be 224. If they did 8, it would be 256, one over the limit (I say heck, super bowl team does not get an 8th)
Doesn't matter. We signed one less player away than we lost. That means we get one comp pick. Then the value is determined by the contract and playing time of the top player we lost. That's LaMont, who was considered by the formula to be a 3rd round comp pick. The question is why we didn't get one of the extra 7ths they give away to fill the quota of 32 picks.
