1. There is no way you can evaluate either draft class right now. 2. IF you could, 2013 would not be classified as bad.
Ivory for a 4th even in hindsight was a great trade. Don't know how you argue otherwise. We just need an OC that can call a run every now and then.
True but the over popular opinion among NFL gurus is Idzick hung Ryan out to dry and his handling of the cb position left the team severely lacking. Never mind his terrible drafting of a WR in a draft that was loaded with WR's. Don't forget forcing Ryan to play GeNO and not even having an open competition. To make it worse he ranked near the bottom as a GM.
Everyone should always turn down raises and promotions out of fear of being fired in the future. This might be the dumbest thing I've seen posted this season.
People do abstain from taking such jobs if the situation seems less than ideal. Look no further than the candidates who interviewed before Idzik.
I'm so tired of hearing about the CBs and WRs. I'm glad we didn't overspend on a CB in FA. He tried to address it in the draft with McDougle and come draft time, we did have Milliner still in theory. Sure, both were injured, but the comical thing about it is that everyone saw dreadful play from Milliner until the last 2 weeks of the season when he looked like a superstar. Then everyone started projecting him as a superstar, until he got hurt again, and now he's back to being a bum in everyone's eyes. Why? Because our fan base is just stupid. We anoint someone in 2 seconds and then we tear him down in 2 seconds. So damn fickle. And McDougle we haven't had time to judge, but reports are that he works hard, studies hard, and has talent. Yes, he has an injury history, and so he gets hurt, and fans rip him and Idzik apart. But say he doesn't get hurt...are we saying that he doesn't have the potential to be very good in this league? People are saying that, but the truth is, no one has a damn clue. Could the situation be better? Sure. But the conspiracy theory stuff is just bullshit. And enough with the WRs already. Yup, swing and a miss. We get it. But he got Decker, which some people liked. We got Harvin, which of course got flamed because of the timing. We kept Kerley, which most people liked. But onto the draft, where are these stud WRs? Watkins and Evans look decent (both gone by our pick). OBJ looks like a superstar (gone by our pick). There's not a single WR that was there for our pick that is lighting it up. Some are playing pretty well, but nothing crazy here. But everyone acts like these guys are so fantastic. Cooks - decent before injury with DREW BREES throwing him the ball Benjamin - flashes of stardom, and flashes of being average Lee - yawn, minor flashes of being alright Matthews - decent so far in a high-powered offense Richardson - yawn Devante Adams - average Latimer - yawn Allen Robinson - decent before injury Landry - decent Huff - yawn Moncrief - eh John Brown - he's a slot WR, we have one, but has shown flashes Jalen Saunders - sucked (but was nothing to sneeze at at OK) Ellington - yawn Evans - same deal as Saunders Bryant - put together a couple big plays for the Steelers It gets worse from there. Basically, where the Jets drafted their WRs, they wouldn't have gotten anything better than Saunders, Evans, and Enunwa. It didn't work, but most of the guys drafted after them haven't done shit with better QBs. But we're Jets fans, so we overreact to everything. The grass is always greener. Should we have drafted one of those other guys that people are pretending are lighting up the league? Maybe. But they'd still look like shit on this team, so we would have flamed those picks too. As a fan base, we do nothing but exaggerate EVERYTHING. It's annoying. But I'm sure every fan base does it.
Or they got other jobs. You're just some guy on the Seahawks, you're going to turn down a GM position? That's asinine. Most people are looking for that opportunity, and not getting to pick your own coach is a pretty good crutch if things go south. The truth is, he hitched his wagon to Rex when he kept him after the first year. Which led me to believe he liked Rex as a coach, so in theory, he did pick his own coach.
solid post only thinng i would add is evans went on i.r. early after missing beginning of camp due to college rules, he could end up just as good as the players people are crying over
Sure, we see people turn down opportunities every year, more notably OC's or DC's for HC positions, but it does happen for various reasons. I agree that not having a say in your coach is a good crutch if things go south, but I disagree that just because a raise/promotion is offered that the person has to take it.
By this logic anyone who took the job deserved to be fired immediately. Not that I expect you to be logical.
I think the only reason you don't take it is if there's only a minor pay increase, your family is rooted in a certain location and you're comfortable, or you want to stay out of the limelight. I think most people in the NFL brand who are turning down opportunities are the ones that know more opportunities are coming for them, or can reasonably assume that's the case. Idzik got a potentially once in a lifetime opportunity.
The way things have played out, you are most likely correct. I have no insight into Idzik's thought process when he took the job, but the way the process played out hinted a low probability of ending well, but it was his decision to make and have to deal with the outcome.
Your point about whether Idzik can be properly evaluated over 2 years is well taken, but you are overlooking a couple of things: when he held that press conference to, I guess, try to explain his "plan", it was one of the most bizarre performances I ever saw a sports executive make. He talked in circles, rambled, made no sense, and sounded like an 18 year old trying to talk his way out of a pot bust. When Belidick tries to intentionally obfuscate he makes more sense than Idzik did. Does that inspire condfidence that this guy knows what he is doing? If not, why keep him? The second thing that gives pause to consider is that he took this job, after other more desirable candidates had passed, knowing that the assinine owner was going to force him to keep the buffonish poor excuse for a head coach we have. That too has to make you wonder about his thought process. Given these circumstances, I can't blame people for wanting to send him packing after 2 years.
Yes, let's evaluate GMs by how well they talk with the press, that sounds like a winning strategy. And since normally GMs in the NFL get like 5 years at least, who cares who the coach is coming in, if he sucks you can always replace him. Of course, Idzik might have underestimated the insanity of local fans/media and now possibly ownership, but hey, that could've happened to anyone.
^Yes, absolutley lets evaluate them by how well they explain themselves and their plans to the media, because that is talking to US, the fan base, in combination with how the team performs on the field. And Idzik has sucked, in both instances thus far. And the idea of keeping people around for the sake of "continuity" is just as invalid as you feel jettisoning a GM after 2 years is. As I said, I don't know what Idzik's plan is because he apparently has a problem putting together a simple sentence, maybe if he could coherently explain what he is trying to do, not so many people would be calling for his head.
Bill belichek gives great press conference performances that are designed to enlighten and inform all Patriots fans, which is why they love him. The win-loss record is totally secondary.
Every fan base does is right especially when the team plays to a 3-12 record. And while your tired of hearing about the cb's ( I am as well), every game day it comes to bite us in the azz. Looking at our wr's I salivate when I see a Sammy W. or Beckham and ask why can't we draft a guy like them? Or any of these 2014 drafts.
