Downtown is where the action is as far as nightlife/food. You can get to the trolley fairly quickly as well. If you want to save some $$ stay at Hotel Circle which has free shuttles to the trolley which takes you directly into the stadium.
If any of you guys are coming to the game in San Diego, come over to the Chargers boards and find out about some of the tailgates in the lot before the game. I could post some links here if you guys are interested. If you are not a complete Douche you can get food and beers all over in the lot. Hell I'll pack some extra beers for you if you want. This is a good place to start- Boltpride.com does a tailgate every game I think and visiting fans were welcome from what I read.
Honestly last time I was in San Diego I stayed at the Loews Coronado which was awesome but far from anything. I also drove and know the area very well so it's no biggie but hotel circle is the place to stay if your going to the Qualcomm. I always stayed at the Comfort Suites across from the two story Target... a 2 story fucking Target. And Seau's is right there as well.
One way or another it looks like I'll be there. My brother in law is trying to get alumni tickets like he's done in the past for me. My nephew turns 16 this week and is a diehard Charger fan, so I'll likely be taking him with me. I'd definitely be down to meet up beforehand, although it'll likely be a day trip for me.
If you want to splurge stay at The Catamaran. It's on Mission Bay and it's like Polynesia. Your 16 year olds will thank you for it. Granted you'll need a car but well worth it. I'm sure the SD guys on this board will agree with me.
Of course I will be there, I am at all the west coast games. I have family in Chula Vista, that's 15 mins from the game, so I will be crashing there. See you all at the tailgate party!
You guys don't want to come to San Diego. The weather is awful here. It hasn't gotten above 75 in weeks and we even had a couple days where water was falling from the sky.

No need to dig into your savings.....just starve for a month, give up a few beers, some other fun things, etc. etc.,.....just restructure the budget temporarily.
Who is going to be staying in a stupid hotel room? I say book the best price you can find & go out & party at the stadium or play at the beach. San Diego is too pretty to waste $$$ on a stupid hotel room. Clean shower/clean sheets...that is all you need.
I've been living in SD for the past 5 years. I'd recommend staying in the Gaslamp district downtown. Lots to do there (shopping, restaurants, etc. all walking distance) and its only a 10-15 minute drive to the stadium.
