Because you lose ABSOLUTELY NOTHING by making this move and gain everything.

You get Ramsey under contract, for insurance, for NOTHING. You pay him 250K of his 1.7M up front, as a roster bonus, so it doesn't even go into next yrs cap. Basically, you give Ramsey a 250K advance on his salary this year in turn you get 1 more year of insurance...

Very good move here.. 250K is not enough to keep him from being cut this year. Makes it unlikely, but if it's real ugly he'll still go, and you get insurance in case he goes off this year OR if someone goes down.

Eh, bad argument. Our QB situation is horrible, there really is no way around it. Of those teams, I would put Buffalo behind us and Oakland on par with us.

The Bengals will be set, Palmer is healing nicely.
The Titans have a bright future, Volek is a great caretaker QB who will make for some interesting games and Young looks like a star.
The Raiders are ok, Brooks can play, he just won't lead you to the Superbowl any time soon.
The Cleveland Browns look like they also have a promising young guy who is ready to start.
The Bills are dead in the water, choosing between Losman, Holcomb and Nall is unenviable.
The Bears are on point, they have Grossman, Griese and Orton, all of whom proved they could win at some point in their career.
The Chargers are better than us, Rivers was a great prospect coming out, sitting on the bench and learning for two years shouldn't change that.

The one team you should have mentioned is San Francisco.

Well, to begin with, I wasn't aware that this year's salary would count against next year's payroll to begin with, but that really wasn't the point.

I wasn't calling it a bad move. I was just saying that it doesn't look good for Pennington. Sure, this could be viewed as an insurance policy to any fan, but if you were Chad, and you saw this move made, you might be thinking the vote of no-confidence had already been placed in the ballot box by The Tangini.

I won't lie and say I am not a Ramsey fan. I gave him a chance coming into minicamp, but he did nothing to show he is any better than Gibbs thought he was. Of course, I will still wait and see with him, like I do every Jets QB (even Vinny) but I don't expect much from him. I am pulling for Penny, and I want Bollinger here. I, like so many others around here, are viewing Clemmens as the future anyway. For me, that leaves Ramsey the odd man out.

But I'm not in charge, so I just keep watching and waiting. Guess we will know soon enough anyway.

After last year it wouldn't suprise me if we kept all four QBs. Does anyone know if teams have done that in the past?

I'm not sure if you read it correctly.
This is what I took from it:
Ramsey gets 250K of this years salary now instead of in weekly game checks.
Ramsey gets a new 2.1M contract for next year, 1.7M of which is payable only if he is on the roster next March.
Ramsey gets a 400K base salary next year which because he does not have a bonus aside from the roster bonus, will wash away if he is cut.

This really just means that Ramsey won't be cut in training camp, which I never thought was going to happen anyway. Keeping both Pennington and Ramsey on the team in 2007 wouldn't make any sense anyway, since either CP comes back healthy (in which case you don't need Ramsey) or he is out the door.

I was thinking the same thing for a while and was basing my assumptions on what we have been getting from beat writers and such, but we haven't heard from the CS seriously regarding Ramsey and don't know what Mangini and Lil Schott truly think of him - and this development kind of rubs against the general consensus view of Ramsey. He could be penciled in at backup for all we know. The press is making assumptions based on a narrow window view, and I'm not really going to put any weight behind what they predict the Jets to do unless there is a quote attached from now on.

Rambo, you've spent too much time in the jungles of SE Asia. Either you're a Jets darksider, which is your prerogative, or you don't watch much NFL football outside of the NY market.

Palmer: "healing nicely" and being able to play at full speed/avoiding contact are two separate things. Because then I'll say Chad's healing nicely and will solidify our QB situation.

    V. Young: if he looks like a star, then I'm going to say Clemens will be as big a star. And Volek is as unproven in a full 16-game schedule as Ramsey.

    A. Brooks: if Brooks "can play," so can I. I think you need to get the NFL Ticket and watch how bad he really is.

Frye: Cleveland "looks like they have..." You said all you need to say.

Bears: Grossman is one preseason game away from disaster (see the last two years). And since when did he become Jim McMahon, no less Erik Kramer? 17-41 for 192 vs. Carolina. One game I give you, but he's proven nothing yet. Bears are far from being settled at QB at this point.

  10. All this move indicates to me, is that the FO actually sat down w/ Ramsey and acknowledged his presence. It was basically us saying "You're no longer w/ the Redskins, welcome to NY...here's some pocket change". I doubt it effects the overall scheme of things long term for the QB situation.

As for Ramsey's mini camp performance: C'mon, we can't put any stock whatsoever into anything we have heard. For one, the only people who are speaking out w/ any evaluations are the beat writers who are just looking for a story, and secondly we're talking about the team's first installment w/ a brand new offense, alot of new faces, and a brand new CS. It's even MORE unique for Ramsey, who additionally is in a brand new setting.

I'll wait until acouple weeks into Training camp before I make any inferences regarding the QB depth chart.

    I read it perfectly.

This was a sweet deal for the Jets. They get a year to audition Ramsey. If they do not like what they see, they cut him in March and pay 0. If they do, they keep him on board. It costs them 0 additional dollars against the 2006 cap. It costs them 0 against the 2007 cap if he's cut.

How can anyone bitch about this deal?

:eek:hmy: au contraire, fan. this means they have ramsey , bolly and clemmins, with brad smith as the emergency wr/qb. they can cut noodle arm and start clearing more cap space for future years.

if anything, it shows they are not locked into herm's pet as the starting qb. hell, i could have waved a towel on the sidelines for a lot less than $24 million over the last 3 years. :shit:

Wow, your hate for Chad is very strong. What did he ever do to you?

Stop jumping to conclusions and let his play on the field do the talking.

I like the contract extention. Ramsey could be the Jets Starting Qb this year and next year. Then i think Clemens will take over.

You know, you make a really good point. That's the same thing I have been thinking about Penny and Clemmens since minicamp started. By the time the reporters were allowed in, Penny had already had his share of snaps. They worked him behind closed doors before unveiling him to the writers.

People went on and on about Clemmens getting the majority of the work once the press was watching. Does that mean Clemmens is the man? Or does it just mean that Mangini wants to hide his cards until all bets are in? Based on what I have seen from him so far, I am betting Mangini is going with the latter. (Not to mention, why wouldn't a rookie get more "instruction time" considering every other QB we have has had real game experience in the NFL?)

The press sucks. I've said it before, and I'll repeat it until I turn blue.

And guys, again, I'm not saying this is a bad deal. I actually agree with the Gruden mentality of collecting QBs like trading cards. Why not? If you can squeeze them under the cap, carry as many as you can afford. Think about it like this, regardless of Ramsey's ability, wouldn't we have been in much better shape last year if we had the current four guys in our stables? Any day of the week I would take my chances with Ramsey than with Vinny.

Good, more depth at the QB position, for the future too.

Chad Pennington is done as a professional football player. He's the only one who dosent know it yet.

John Clayton on Sportscenter said confusingly enough that Ramsey being extended means that Pennington will be the starter, but that the Jets want him locked up in case it doesn't work out.

I personally don't see it that way. I've thought since he was aquired that Ramsey was here to be the starting QB and this goes a long way towards confirming it in my mind.
