I respect your opinion, but IMO the jets greatest need is linebacker--They got squat besides Mosely, and he is likely gone after 2022. The jets got run over every game last year--it looked like they still had Darron Lee playing LB.
However, JD has signed a former first round WR in each of his first two seasons, Perriman and Davis. If we would have landed Hill it woulda been 3 straight years. The two guys we are gunning for, Samual and Mercalf, went rounds two and three respectively.
I like Moore a lot but even if he's a 1,000 yard per year guy the unit still isn't good enough. If we look at most of the best teams almost all of them have multiple guys, either WRs or TEs, that gain 1,000 yards per year or more. We'll have one of those guys even if Moore turns out to be that. Spot on. We've been behind the NFL receiving talent curve for so long that we think taking a couple guys in the 2nd round means we've done enough. It's not even close to what the top teams have.
Regardless of when the guys we signed were drafted, they aren't good enough. Unless we trade for Metcalf, Brown, or Deebo before the draft then we really should take a WR in the first round. Doesn't it blow anyone else's mind that we haven't taken a WR in the first round in 20 years!? Just how insane is that? Two decades! In a league where all the best teams are the best passing teams and WRs make more money than almost any other position. It's like we're playing a different sport than all the other teams. We have been that incompetent. The pass happy NFL is far from a new trend, either. It's been this way for 10+ years and we still haven't gotten the memo.
Exactly….this team has consistently undervalued pass rusher and receiver for decades. the last pass rusher we had was Abraham…and we traded him away! The last time we had good receivers was that one year with Marshall and Decker and that lasted all of one season because they were a bit older. It’s ridiculous that we keep drafting DT and S in early rounds…fucking crazy
I agree that receiver depth is important, but grabbing a WR in the first round just because we haven't done it in 20 years is, well, to use your word , insane. Kiper, McShay and all the experts agree that this WR class is NOT elite; there is no Chase, Waddell, or other elite receiver there. If the jets move down to 15-25, then maybe, but taking any of the current crop at either 4 or 10 is NOT good VALUE. Forget the past--don't overpay now just because Mike MacMoron and John Idzik, etc. had their head up their butt for countless years. I'm all for a WR in round two, a guy like Watson. But if they stay at 4 and 10, the jets need DEFENSE!
Antoine Winfield Jr is pretty good. That wasn't really my point though, the poster cited free agency and the draft
I love this. We should trade for Deebo Samuel, AJ Brown, or DK Metcalf - if NOT absolutely draft one in the 1st round. How stupid are the Jets anyway? They havent taken a WR in the 1st round in 20 years OMFG!! -- Samuel, Brown and Metcalf were all 2nd round picks
Tavon Austin was drafted before DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins before Beckham, Kevin White before Lockett, Josh Doctson before Michael Thomas, Zay Jones before Cooper Kupp, N'keal Harry before any of Samuel, Brown and Metcalf. Fact is WR is a crapshoot, sometimes it takes a couple of years before the cream rises to the top. Can we please have the cream rather than risking the dreggs?
Yes. I’m just wondering how the moves sited have been “at the detriment of (other positions)”. Signing one FA doesn’t prevent the signing of another so the only thing that was affected would be the draft. The S you mentioned was taken before our pick so I still don’t see how the moves we’ve made have been made at the detriment of other positions.
Calling Berrios a major move is a gross overstatement. Based on AAV and guarantees, Douglas made five bigger signings than Berrios this offseason alone.
Just wanted to add: there was a big deal made about the fact that Quinnen Williams chose to play hurt last season when the Jets were out of it and the wiser move might have been to rest him. This is the kind of move a guy makes when he wants to make a statement to his teammates about what is needed to compete at a high level in the NFL. I should have added this to the post where I mentioned Mosley above because Quinnen Williams is also in that category of leadership.
I agree that they need some more bodies at LB but it’s just not a position I see them investing in early in the draft. I could see 69 or later being used on a LB but not before.
